In 2003, I was appointed as the foundation Principal and worked hard with Associate Principals Colin Marshall, Peter Rudrum and Noelene Mason and foundation Business Manager Annette Rogers to make the dream of the community become reality. Many of the staff selected back then are still at the college today and have been the driving force behind the college success. In 2004, we had a different curriculum and staff worked hard to establish a college that was focussed on each student and their individual needs. During the next two or three years we had hundreds of visitors from all over the world coming to CVC to see world’s best practice in action. In 2007 we were recognised as one of 12 schools across the world in leading education for the future. In 2012, the lower school curriculum changed and clearly the external focus was on NAPLAN and school league tables. We needed to evolve and in doing so amalgamated the middle and senior schools to have a more traditional structure. While academic rigor became the focus my dedicated staff searched for ways to not lose our dedication to developing student wellbeing and resilience. In reflection, I have not broadcast the success of Canning Vale College as much as it surely deserves. I am constantly reminded by new staff and relief staff that come into the college about how good we really are in comparison to other schools both private and public. The students are relaxed and enjoy their work. Staff are well ahead of others in what they doing with students and in school generally, and the leadership team is enthusiastic and focussed on improvement. Over the years I have had many parents and community members help me in delivering a quality education for the Canning Vale Community. While in fear of excluding others I need to mention a few. Karen Neil and Margaret Lawrence were key players from 2000 to drive the need for a local school then worked with me until only recently to help guide its success. Along the way Deb (and Mark) Illingworth, Janet Buckle, Martine Martin and Jacquie Jacobson have been major contributors. There has been many others willing to give their time to help the college and to all of your I say thank you. I now handover leadership to Peter Rudrum knowing he will continue

to move the college forward. David Goode, our College Board chair is also only relatively new to the position but will continue to rally parents and community to achieve the best we can be. It is with sadness that I move on but I have much pride in the college and its people and I know the foundations for excellence have been set. We are already a school of choice and this can only get better. Finally I would like to thank all the people who have helped me over the years; my evolving leadership team, college staff, external agencies and institutions, parents and community members. Board Chair Report

My name is David Goode and, as Chairman of the Canning Vale College Board, I would like to introduce your College Board

members to you and outline how the College Board works for you.

Representatives on the College Board include:

Council Member - David Goode - City of Gosnells Councillor, Justice of the Peace, Finance Company Director

College Principal - Peter Rudrum

Community Members - Peter Abetz – former Member of Parliament, Dr Susan Blackley – Senior Lecturer, School of Education,

Curtin University

College Manager Corporate Services - Deb Oorjitham

College Teachers - Peter Berger, Jackie D’Sylva

Student Councillor Head Boy - Eric Rumsley

Student Councillor Head Girl - Ngoc Mai Duong

Industry Member - Russell Lawrence

Parent Representatives - Andrew McLean, Jodie Norwell, Khushwinder Arak, Joseph Carriera, Rajan Tamilalagan Natarajan.

College Board members from a variety of positions within the wider school community have nominated, or been nominated, to the

board in order to collaborate on strategic planning for our College. The College Board meets monthly during school terms.

It is the responsibility of the College Board to ensure the College operates well; the College Board is not responsible for the day-to-

day running of the College. The College Board makes decisions regarding the most effective policies to adopt that are innovative

and best suit the needs of the students and will enhance the reputation of Canning Vale College. The Board considers strategic

planning of the College and to ensure objectives regarding the CVC Business plan are met. The Board meets to ensure the College

is functioning to the best of its ability and that support is given to the Principal. We review from time to time the College’s

objectives. The Board is also responsible for ensuring adequate financial arrangements are in place to meet all the needs of the

College.

Programs operating at CVC provide outstanding opportunities for the students and are a credit to the dedicated staff that run

them. CVC provides lots of academic support for ATAR students as well as enormous range of Vocational Education and Training

Certificates catering for both university and non-university career pathways. We also offer a Specialist Music program, Academic

and Visual Art extension programs and the Teaching Learning Support Team that works with students with a learning difficulty or

disability. CVC also has a Student Services team that does great work to provide support for parents and students to better manage

the challenges of High School. There are also many other initiatives to suit a range of student interests including the Chess Club,

Circus Troupe, Bush Rangers Cadets, Book Club, Media Club, Robotics Group and the 90+

Club, not to mention all the after-hours sporting teams that the students can participate

in.

During term 1 on 3rd March, Year 12’s had their ball which from all accounts was a great

success. The students also commemorated ANZAC day with a moving service. As a

Councillor with the City of Gosnells this means a great deal to me and it is comforting to

know our College acknowledges this event. I am very enthusiastic about this great

learning space and I look forward to another busy and successful year as CVC Board

Chairman.

Presentation Awards & Achievements

Honours Club Morning Tea Celebration

On Thursday the 6th April, students received their certificates in recognition of gaining successful entry into our Honours Club for

the Semester 1/2016. The morning tea was attended by the 46 award recipients, with over 40 parents also attending.

Honours Club is a celebration of our high achievers in Years 7-10, awarded after each reporting cycle (based on A grades achieved).

Students need to acquire a minimum of 6 A grades, with at least two of these being attained in their MESH subject areas (i.e.

Maths, English, HASS & Science) for admittance into Honours Club.

It is important to note that our formal Honours Club presentation is not only a celebration of the hard work and dedication of the

award recipients, but also the teaching staff at CVC for supporting the curriculum development of these students. Well done to

all CVC staff who have clearly made a difference in nurturing the academic pursuits of these students and to parents/guardians

providing a supportive family environment that allows our students to aspire for academic excellence!

Year 8 Black Death Workshop

In Week 10 Term 1, Year 8 Canning Vale College (CVC) Humanities

Students had the opportunity to participate in a Black Death

workshop that looks at the emotional responses people had to the

Black Death in the 14th-century and how experiences of the plague

varied for people of different social, religious and economic

backgrounds. CVC students learned about how the plague was

contracted and the symptoms of the plague. Thereafter, CVC students

had the opportunity to apply special effects makeup to recreate the

look of the Black Death!

2018 Prospective Year 7 Information Nights

All families with children entering Year 7 in 2017 were invited to a Prospective Year 7 Information Evening on Monday 13th March and Tuesday

14th March. The sessions provided parents and prospective students with more information about secondary schooling, the enrolment process,

our specialist programs (Music, A+ Academic and Visual Art Extension) and what CVC in particular, can offer your child. Parents were given the

opportunity to talk to each of the specialist program coordinators and participate in tours of the school.

There will be further Year7 Information nights throughout the year.

CVC hosts Undergraduate Medical and Health Sciences Test (UMAT)

During the second week of our school holidays Canning Vale College hosted the National Institute of Education (NIE), Simulated

Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Test (UMAT) Workshop. 50 students from a range of public and private schools in

our state attended the event, including fourteen of our own school community.

Through participation in the UMAT workshop, students were provided with an 8.5 hour opportunity to familiarise themselves with

the UMAT experience, which they will be attempting for real on the 26th of July 2017. The workshop exposed students to

important techniques and strategies for success in preparation for UMAT, an interview training session for all applicants to

consider, and finally culminating in a UMAT Test Trial paper to the real difficulty level, under timed conditions.

On behalf of the CVC community, I would like to wish all students the best of luck and success with their UMAT test!

Presentation Awards & Achievements

In Week 10 of Term 1, Canning Vale College (CVC) staff and students gathered together to represent the youth of the ANZAC spirit.

The Commemorative Services enables students to reflect and honour the service and sacrifice of all Australians who have served in

war or peacekeeping operations, both past and present.

Speeches were made by the CVC student councillors who reflected on the significance and importance of this national occasion,

along with a reading of the Ode of Remembrance and presentation of the wreath. CVC students performed the Last Post, while the

flag was lowered, and all in attendance observed the one minute’s silence. CVC’s Junior Vocal Ensemble beautifully performed a

harmonised rendition of the Australian National Anthem.

What does ANZAC Day mean to CVC Staff

CVC's Year 9 A+ students were given a group task on World War 1. One of the objectives was to write an article on ANZAC day and

what it means to CVC Staff Members. Below is in excellent article written by CVC student Kya Bitmead

"ANZAC Day is an annual remembrance day where people all over Australia and New Zealand take the time on the 25th of April to

reflect on the day that the ANZAC’s landed in Gallipoli in 1914 to fight and to remember all those people who died because of the

war.

Many who fought in this war were able to create an image for Australia and New Zealand and to make them become a legend. The

characteristics shown by these soldiers were a representative of what characteristics would be found within their society and were

revealed in the most challenging times. They obtained an image that became synonymous with the term ‘digger’ which created the

stereotype of a patriotic Australian family who’d served and spent civilian life in a rural area.

There were five ‘digger-like’ qualities that came into place from the ANZAC’s when facing hardship. These were; the ability to

remain cheerful with a good sense of humour even in the most difficult times. The ability to be resourceful when they had no

supplies. The spirit of mateship, to have the courage and the belief that people all deserve an equal amount of respect no matter

their background.

After interviewing, staff from Canning Vale College about what they think the meaning of ANZAC Day is, their knowledge about the

war and their personal experiences. We were able to gather great insight into what WW1 and ANZAC Day meant to them.

Many staff recognised that the 25th of April as the Day of Remembrance. They use this day to remember those who served and died

during the war and all those sacrifices they made to show loyalty and respect towards their country. They also take the time to

commemorate all the men and women who fought to ensure that the country had freedom and protection. They not only

remember the soldiers, they also take the time to remember and show respect towards the military, nurses, doctors and non-

military support personnel’s who returned from war usually mentally or physically scarred by their traumatic experiences of war.

Many staff interviewed at Canning Vale College have a wide knowledge about World War 1 and ANZAC Day. The majority of CVC

staff interviewed said they had a relative of some sort that was somehow associated with World War 1 or ANZAC Day.

Grandparents, great grandparents and great-uncles were the most popular relatives that staff had who served in the war. One of

the staff interviewed said her husband’s uncle was killed in the war, he was 17.

Out of the staff we interviewed two of them have served in the military themselves. CVC still continues to ensure that those

currently serving and those who have fallen are remembered and paid respects.

Thank you to all the staff of Canning Vale College who set aside time to be interviewed, to pass on their knowledge and their

experiences about World War 1 and what ANZAC Day means to them. “

Surf Online Safe

Year 12 School Ball

On Friday the 3rd March the Year 12 school ball was held at Esplanade Fremantle. Both staff and students had a fantastic night,

everyone looked amazing and were very well behaved.

On Wednesday 8th March and Thursday 9th March all students in Years 7-10 attended a presentation called Surf Online Safe. The

presentation is designed to show students the risks associated with online

behaviour and give them strategies to ensure that they use online profiles in

an appropriate way.

Presenter Paul Litherland was a WA Police Officer for 20+ years. In the last 6

years of his career he worked in the field of Technology Crime, where he

worked directly with children and adults who were the victims of online

crime. During this time he realised the limited resources available on the

subject of Internet Safety. In particular, organisations, or self-proclaimed

"Cyber Safety Experts", lacked the appropriate knowledge and relevance to

what is happening in the real online world and the true concerns parents

and schools are having.

Since 2012 Paul has presented to schools, sharing his knowledge, experience

and insight into the dangers of the online world. He is considered one of

Perth's leading experts on this subject. Paul uses very interesting and real

examples that shock and challenge the way in which students view social media and other online activities. This presentation was a

real light bulb moment for our students.

Paul also conducted an after school parent presentation where he spoke to parents about how their children can use social media

in a more appropriate and secure way. By all accounts it was very well received!

Circus at the Farm (ACT BELONG COMMIT CVC CIRCUS TROUPE)

On Sunday 19th February Canning Vale College hosted Circus at Farm, a children’s circus day for all primary/secondary aged

children and their families, at Perth City Farm.

Along with four and a half hours of Perth and Melbourne’s best children’s entertainment all in one place, Circus at the Farm also

hosted the publicly acclaimed Twilight Markets, street performers, food trucks, market stalls, and staged performances.

Melbourne's award winning children's circus show "Arrr We There Yet!?" presented by Head First Acrobats, impressed the

audience with their amazing acrobatic pirate antics. Inspired by Mardi Gras/Calypso festivals and a myriad of musical forms,

Junkadelic Collective also put on a show they have been touring all over WA, Hong Kong and America since 2002.

Last but certainly not least, the packed out audience was entertained with some of Perth’s finest 5 star, award winning youth circus

shows including the incredible Sliderz from CircusWA, ACT BELONG COMMIT—Canning Vale College Circus Troupe, and Cirquest.

Habiba's Passion for Helping Youth

2016 Year 12 Canning Vale College student Habiba Asim has a

great passion for supporting young people. On Australia Day

Habiba received the Safe City Constable Peter Ball Memorial

Award, which recognises young people or groups who contribute

to crime prevention and community safety and increase

opportunities for young people.

Her experiences of leaving her birth country of Pakistan when she

was just one, to living in New Zealand and then attending high

school at CVC has given her a unique perspective on some of the

issues facing young people.

Habiba is now studying Exercise and Sport Science at Notre Dame University and regularly mentors and speaks to young people as

part of her work with the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) and Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia.

Bullying. No Way! Day

Our school is dedicated to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. With this in mind, Friday 17th

March, Bullying. No Way! Day is an important day for our school community. It brings about a unified message to 'take a stand

together' against bullying and violence. Schools across Australia are getting involved and taking action in their communities.

The aim is about starting a conversation about bullying and how we can work together to address it.

By working together as a community we can find workable solutions - it’s about parents, teachers, staff and students all getting

involved.

Year 8 students covered this in health, Year 7 students had a short clip shown in the PAC during their assembly, pancakes/

information were given out before school and tug-o-war activities took place in the Year 7 area during lunch.

We're proud to say 'Bullying. No Way!'

Peter Rudrum.

Official Launch of the Best Books for Earth and Environmental Science

Invited guests of Earth Science Western Australia (ESWA) descended upon Canning Vale College on Thursday 23rd of March to celebrate the

official launch of Edition two of the Exploring Earth and Environmental Science textbook, written by Jo Watkins - Chief Executive Officer of Earth

Science Western Australia.

The textbook was originally released in 2011 but has since undergone a major revision to align itself more closely to the WA Curriculum. The new

textbook is split into two volumes, Year 11 and 12, to produce relevant, easy to read and visually appealing textbooks for students.

ESWA Board members, supporters and volunteers, Earth and Environmental Science (EES) teachers and students took this opportunity to

celebrate an important milestone in EES education. Peter Rudrum, CVC Principal, enthusiastically welcomed all guests and spoke about the

important assistance given to the College’s teachers and students to resource and promote earth sciences education across Years 7-12.

Mark Thompson, Vice Chair of ESWA, reminisced about the history of the textbook, thanked the many contributors to this edition and shared a

little about the large number of successful programs ESWA runs across the state. Professor Lyn Beazley then took the stage to officially launch this

edition outlining how important EES and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) education is for our future.

This launch was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all that is being done to support and promote earth sciences education across WA.

Undergraduate Medicine and Health Science Test (UMAT) Workshop

Year 12 CVC students aspiring to be medical practitioners,

dentists and health practitioners attended a workshop by Sue

Pougnault who outlined the process of UMAT (The

Undergraduate Medicine and Health Science Admission Test)

and the admission procedure at UWA in gaining entry into their

various Health Sciences programs.

The Undergraduate Medicine and Health Science Admission Test

(UMAT) is designed to assess a range of non-academic personal

qualities which are considered important for the study and

practice of medicine, dentistry and other health professions. The

tests are developed each year to rigorous professional and

technical standards by the Australian Council for Educational

Research (ACER - an independent national research and development organisation) on behalf of a group of universities (the UMAT

Consortium) formed for the purpose of collaborating on selection testing of applicants for bachelor degrees in medicine and health

sciences. ACER is responsible for the administration of UMAT on behalf of the UMAT Consortium.

The workshop provided students with the opportunity to gain a greater insight into the various entry pathways available at UWA

and the support structures available. With just less than seven months to go before the final Year 12 WACE exams, they now have

a greater understanding of the learning pathway to secure their goal in seeking university entry into Medicine, Dentistry and

Health Sciences.
