Dear Parents/Guardians, Friends and Students of SAC, Each year, as we say goodbye to our Year 12 students, we can’t imagine how we will replace them. The sacrament of Reconciliation was a very significant moment in the lives of 28 Year 3 students and their families last week. The girls sang beautifully and entered into the true meaning of the occasion with respect. We thank the Year 3 teachers and Ms Sandra Sofia for preparing the girls to appreciate the true value of saying sorry and being forgiven. At our final School Tour for this year in Week 2, I asked Year 12 student Hannah Southcombe to speak to prospective families about her education at SAC and how she feels as she prepares to move on to her life beyond school. I find that parents are often keen to hear from current students when they visit the campus and I share with you an excerpt from Hannah’s speech:

“I believe school is about finding your passions. As well as giving me great academic opportunities SAC has helped me develop my passion for social justice and leadership. There are many ways to get involved such as our JAM (Justice and Mercy) Group. This enthusiastic bunch of Year 7 to 12 students meet every Wednesday at lunchtime. In these meetings we discuss current local and international ethical issues and then take action by raising awareness and voicing our concerns. I love sport, and during my time at SAC I have played basketball, netball and badminton. I have also coached some of the junior school teams in basketball and volleyball. Every year we have whole school athletics and swimming carnivals which are great fun. Team sports are a great way to get involved and create a wider variety of friends.I can’t really believe that this Friday is my last official day of school. Just exams to go and then I’ll cross my fingers until December. Next year, I hope to study International Development at Adelaide University, furthering my passion to make a difference to people less fortunate than myself. I will miss this place, the wonderful relationships that I have developed with both students and teachers and I will look back fondly on the wonderful opportunities SAC has given me. Thankfully, my sister will still be here, so I’ll have an excuse to pop in every now and then.Choosing a school can be tricky, but I know that my parents made the right choice for me and I know that if you do choose SAC for your daughter you will be giving them a wonderful opportunity to find their passion and be part of our great school community.”

I’m sure you will agree that Hannah’s words capture what most parents hope for in their daughter’s education: a love of learning, a belief in herself and a determination to make a difference in the world. We hope that your daughters hold on to this self-belief and love of learning in the exciting events in the coming weeks – be they her Year 12 Graduation or her first-ever SAC Spectacular. I look forward to sharing these moments with students and their families.

Twenty eight Year 3 students celebrated their Sacrament of Reconciliation in the St Francis Xavier Cathedral on Wednesday 28 October 2015. It was a memorable ceremony assisted by our celebrants Fr Peter Rozitis and Fr Dan Harding from the Adelaide Cathedral Parish. We thank them for their involvement and assistance with family preparation. Also, we thank Ms Paddy McEvoy and Ms Christine Simpson who assisted in the giving of the certificates; to teachers Ms Nadia Costantini, Ms Eloise Griffiths, Ms Sera Crilley who prepared the students; to the parents, caregivers and family members who supported the students. It proved to be a joyous celebration for all.Congratulations to the following students who celebrated their Sacrament of Reconciliation:

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

I celebrated my first Reconciliation. Reconciliation is a time for you to say sorry to God. Your family comes to see you. You go up to the priest and he will ask you if you have anything that you are sorry for. After the priest asked you everything and God has forgiven you, you then go back to your seat and sit down and say a prayer with the priest. Josie Ponury 3EGReconciliation was very good because I have no more sins. I have started fresh this morning because I told the priest my sins last night. I was nervous about talking to the priest but I realised it wasn’t that bad to talk to him because no one could hear me except him and God. I enjoyed Reconciliation. Sara Roesler 3EGI had my first Reconciliation. My family were seated on the back row. When it was my turn to talk to the priest I was a bit nervous but when I finished talking to the priest it turned out very good. When I went back to my seat I did my penance. My mum and dad were very proud of me. I also sang the beginning hymn called ‘Need You’. When I got my certificate I was very proud. I had a photo with the priest and my sister. I now like Reconciliation. It was fun to be with my friends and family. Milla Lokhorst 3EGMy family and I sat down to wait for my turn. Ms Costantini told me when to get up. I sat down with the priest and after I confessed he asked God to forgive me of my sins. Then he told me to pray the ‘Our Father’ when I got back to my seat. At the end, they handed out certificates to every Year 3 that had Reconciliation. My parents took many photos. This was something I will remember forever. Johanna Manlapas 3EG

This week has been an extremely busy one for Year 11 students. They have been completing final assessment tasks for each of their subjects and revising thoroughly for their upcoming examinations. These examinations will be held from Wednesday 11 November to Friday 20 November for all Year 11 students.

Monday 9 November and Tuesday 10 November are personal preparation days (Swotvac) and students are not expected to attend school, provided they have completed all course requirements for each of their subjects.

Students were provided with information regarding exams at the most recent Year 11 assembly and via the parent letter which was sent home. Students are reminded:

• During the examination period, students are only required to attend school when they have an examination scheduled.

• Students are expected to be at school at least 30 minutes prior to each examination.

• All students are required to wear correct summer uniform.

If for some reason your daughter is unable to attend an exam, it is important that you notify the SAC Office as soon as possible, preferably on the morning of the exam.

If you have any queries or concerns please contact the school on 8217 3200.

2015 Australian Mathematics Competition

Results (Year 8-12)Results are now available for the 38th annual Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank. Hundreds of Secondary students from around 30 countries sat the AMC on Thursday 30 July 2015. Students compete on the same day making it possibly one of the largest single events on the Australian education calendar. An Australian initiative, the AMC was introduced in 1978 as the first competition of its kind in schools here. It is now a truly international competition, having become the major school mathematics enrichment event and benchmark for mathematical ability throughout the Pacific and South-East Asia. It tests everything from basic numeracy skills through to advanced problem solving.

St Aloysius College entered 20 students, eight of whom achieved a Credit and seven received a Proficiency Certificate. All other students who competed received a Certificate of Participation and every entrant is provided with an individual performance report.

A special congratulations go to the following students:

• Cassie who received a Certificate of High Distinction. This places Xuan in the top 2% of Year 12 students in South Australia.

• Meredith who received a Certificate of Distinction. This places Meredith in the top 15% of Year 9 students across the state.

Well done to all the girls who entered and once again I look forward to many students participating in 2016.

Students from 5JV and 5NC had the rare opportunity to see drones being flown and ask questions of a drone expert, Mr Ben Neale. You may be wondering what a drone is? Sienna Dichiera 5JV explains:“A drone is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which looks like a small plane or helicopter. They can be remote controlled or programmed and have a camera attached to it. Drones are being used in society for environmental, individual and community reasons”. Ben’s presentation was innovative, engaging and inspired students to consider further investigations into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematical) learning. 2015 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools Results (ICAS: Mathematics)

This year a record number of 50 students from Years 4-7 participated in ICAS: Mathematics on Tuesday 11 August 2015. ICAS are independent evaluations of students’ skills and knowledge in core learning areas and provide insight into students’ understanding. The skills and understanding tested are important indicators of success in school and beyond.

Students this year achieved outstanding results. Those students whose achievements were outstanding were rewarded with Certificates of Merit (seven students), Credit (seventeen students) and Distinction (three students). All other students received a Participation Certificate and each student received an individual report of their performance.

A special congratulations to Christy Thomas 4GB, Jessica Nesbitt 4GB and Kira Loh 4GB who all received Distinctions. These three students will be awarded with an ICAS Principal’s Award at the next Primary assembly.

Well done to all students for achieving their personal best and I look forward to as many participants in 2016. Further information regarding ICAS is available on the Educational Assessment Australia website (www.eaa.unsw.edu.au).

Year 4 and 5 students had the opportunity to discuss their online use and the terms and conditions associated with various social media sites. Ms Jane from SAPOL (South Australian Police Department) gave an engaging presentation with real life examples outlining our responsibility to maintain our own online profile. Did you know the following?

Ms Jo VillisPRIMARY ICT COORDINATOR

THE LAW AND OUR ONLINE LIFEAdvice for students and parents

Terms And Conditions

It is important that you read the terms and conditions of ALL networks you sign up for, even for online gaming. Terms and conditions can be very long and boring and can include a lot of long words but is very important that you do have a read. Most social media sites, apps and games state that they may modify, add to, delete, publicly display, reproduce, copy, distribute and use your personal and private information, photos, videos and even private messages and possibly use it in a negative way.

Facebook

When you create a Facebook account you are agreeing to the terms and conditions. You actually need to be thirteen years of age to create an account!

KIK

Did you know that you need to be seventeen years of age to use KIK? This is because the content which can be shared via KIK may be aimed at people over this age and would be classified as inappropriate content for a younger audience. Jane suggests that if you are using KIK, first of all, you need to provide your parents, carers or guardians with your login details including user name and password. SAPOL asks that you to do this for your own protection. If anything happens on KIK, your parents will then be able to help you. Secondly, you must be aware of all the privacy settings on KIK. One of the main privacy settings on KIK is ‘ignore new people’. This setting protects you from random people contacting you. To enable this setting, it is as simple as going into your notifications and enabling ‘ignore new people’. Finally, SAPOL encourages you to become familiar with how to block and report people on KIK. If someone is giving you grief online and you don’t want them to contact you anymore, you can block or delete them by going into your privacy settings, then going to block list. Once you are in your block list you use the + sign at the top right hand corner to access your contacts. You can then select the person you would like to block or delete.

Snapchat

Did you know that you need to be thirteen years of age to use Snapchat? Many people think that Snapchat photos magically disappear after a certain amount of time. However, there are many ways that snapchat photos can be saved, copied and end up in someone else’s hands. If you come across anything inappropriate on snapchat, it is important to know how to block or delete a contact. To do this, click on the right hand side of the contact and click ‘edit’, then you can either block or delete that person. This will prevent them from sending you snaps or videos in future.

Instagram

Did you know you must be at least thirteen years of age to use this service? Instagram has only two privacy options: Private or not. If your photos aren’t private, not only could they be viewed by the millions of people who have the app on their phone, but also anyone who can access the web version of the Instagram online. SAPOL recommends turning privacy on in your Instagram settings so that you can approve who follows you and sees your content. Also make sure that you are mindful of what hashtags you are using. You may have a private account but as soon as you add a hashtag you are making that photo visible under that hashtag, so anyone can see it!

Ms Jane from SAPOL (South Australian Police Department) gave an engaging presentation with real life examples outlining our responsibility to

Friday 30 October was a day of colour, celebration, remembrance and hope. From the courtyard floors to the tops of the Dunlevie building, St Aloysius College was covered in pink in honour of those who have experienced or, sadly, lost their lives to Breast Cancer. One in eight Australian women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer within her lifetime and men can be diagnosed with the illness, too. We were especially moved by the courage and determination of our teacher and colleague, Ms Nicole Jacobs, who passed away from the disease earlier in the year. We wanted to make an even greater impact with Pink Day than in any previous years. With the help of the entire school community, we did exactly that. More than one hundred families made cupcakes, jelly, scones and biscuits to be sold at lunch on Pink Day. One key ingredient was missing from each of the lists submitted with piles of trays of treats: love. In every goodie that was sold was someone’s time, effort and love, and for this, we are grateful. From the cupcake stall alone, we raised $1160.60. This is more than we have ever raised from selling products during one lunch break! The Primary Pink Day Raffle accrued approximately $800 and we will soon find out how much money was raised from the pink casual clothes gold coin donations. We estimate the total amount raised for the Breast Cancer Network SA will exceed $2500, which is an outstanding achievement. This is an issue which in some way affects all of our lives and we are grateful for the support of the school community.A highlight of Pink Day was the staff flashmob which took place at recess. Some of the teachers dressed in pink bow-ties and lab coats and paraded through the school to the tunes of One Direction’s ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’. It didn’t take long for students to realise what was happening and join in too. It is this spirit of community which unites us and defines what it means to be a Mercy school; that we can come together, not necessarily knowing all our peers’ names, but knowing that we are part of a circle of compassion and solidarity with the needs of those at risk or in trouble at the heart of what we do. Thank you to all the staff, students, parents and friends of St Aloysius College who made Pink Day 2015 a great success. We look forward to an equally awesome Pink Day in 2016.

There wasn’t a cloud in the sky when sixteen staff and students from St Aloysius College represented our school at the Welcome to Australia’s annual ‘Walk Together’ event from Festival Plaza to Whitmore Square. Walk Together is in its fourth year. It’s an opportunity for people of all faiths and cultural backgrounds to come together for a day of friendship and festivities and celebrate the wonderful contribution that refugees and migrants make to our South Australian societies and to say that we welcome them in our community. Mr Brad Chilcott, founder of Welcome To Australia, emphasised that it is in our State’s interest to welcome refugees. Indeed, Pope Francis has called on us in the Jubilee Year of Mercy to welcome the stranger.

“I would like to ask you all to see a ray of hope as well in the eyes and hearts of refugees and of those who have been forcibly displaced. A hope that is expressed in expectations for the future, in the desire for friendship, in the wish to participate in the host society also through learning the language, access to employment and the education of children. I admire the courage of those who hope to be able gradually to resume a normal life, waiting for joy and love to return to brighten their existence. We can and must all nourish this hope.”

On Saturday 31 October, this hope was certainly nourished by the SAC community and the wider community of Adelaide. Many thanks to students and staff who attended the walk and we invite all families within the SAC community to join us as we ‘Walk Together’ again in 2016.

On Friday 20 November, we are hosting our first ever NUDE FOOD DAY! We encourage all students to bring foods to school which are not wrapped in plastic to help us minimise our negative impact on the environment. You can bring foods in a plastic container which can then be taken home, or if you would like to bring foods with wrapping, consider taking the rubbish home with you in your school bag at the end of the day, being aware of the rubbish we create and its effect on the world around us. Some recess and lunch ideas for nude food day could be: fruits and vegetables, cheese, dried berries and fruits and biscuits, just to name a few. How creative can you be?

SAC has started the season extremely well with several wins from many of our teams. Within the first two weeks, our Secondary school coaches have already displayed excellent leadership skills and enthusiasm towards coaching their teams. Good luck to all teams and Secondary students who are coaching for the Term 4 season.

Reminder:A reminder to all players and parents that compulsory training is held every Wednesday at lunchtime in the gym. Students are required to check their school email regularly for updated fixtures. Please also check the draw for game times and make sure you are aware of when the last SAC game finishes for the collection time of your daughter.

Basketball This term 40 Years 3-7 students are participating in basketball clinics which aim to introduce new students to the sport in preparation for competition next year 2016 in Term 1. It also provides an opportunity for more experienced players to develop their skills further.

Water PoloThe water polo clinics for Years 5-7 students began in Week 2 on Tuesday afternoons. These clinics are run by former SAC students and an Eastern Saints Senior water polo player. In the first two weeks the Years 5-7 students have been introduced to the various skills, techniques and rules of water polo and are moving towards implementing these in game play. The aim of these clinics is to adequately prepare Year 5 and Year 6 students who may wish to continue playing water polo in the Secondary sports program.

LacrosseLacrosse clinics started on Tuesday lunchtime in Week 2 and will conclude on Tuesday 17 November of Week 6. It has been great to see so many students eagerly participating each week. We hope that many of the students continue playing lacrosse next year in the Term 2 and 3 competition.

SECONDARY SPORT

Term 4 Secondary Sport

Remember to check your school e-mail!

Our Term 4 Secondary sport teams are heading into Round 4 this week for their competitions. With such a short term the seasons are nearly complete with our senior teams only having one more game to go after Round 4 and our junior teams have two games left. Several teams are looking to be strong contenders to finish premiers for the Term 4 summer season. A special mention to the Year 9/10 SAC 1-B touch football team, Year 8/9 SAC 1-C indoor Volleyball Team, Year 7-9 SAC 1-B water polo team, Year 9 SAC 1-B tennis team who all remain undefeated in the respective competitions so far this term.

Knockout Sport - Volleyball

On Thursday 22 October Round 2 of the junior knockout volleyball competition was held at Marden Sports Centre. Several girls teams competed to make the finals day held later this term. The SAC junior team trained intently throughout Terms 3 and 4 under the guidance of Mr Malcolm Smith. Their passion, dedication and team camaraderie set them as strong contenders on the day. The team performed exceptionally well displaying outstanding skill, team work and determination allowing them to win four out of five games. Unfortunately this was not enough to allow them to go through to the finals round. This team will be strong contenders in the 2016 Year 10 knockout competition and we congratulate them on their fantastic representation of the College. Thank you to Mr Malcolm Smith who coached the junior knockout volleyball team this year.

Congratulations!

During school holidays, Meredith Norman 9NR attended the Australian School Orienteering Championships held in Ballarat, Victoria. Numerous events were held over a ten day period. There were three school events. Meredith came first in Australia in the junior girl’s category for this year’s inaugural Australian School Sprint Championship event. Meredith who was also a member of the South Australian Junior Girls team came second in Australia for the Australian School Relay Championships. Congratulations Meredith on these outstanding achievements!

YEAR 9 - ADELAIDE ZOO!

On Monday 26 October, students from 9LF and 9RK visited the Adelaide Zoo as part of their Science curriculum. This term the girls have been learning about the adaptations of living organisms and how these help them to survive in their particular ecosystems. They have also investigated the importance of biodiversity. While at the zoo, the girls were able to study the different animals and their adaptations at close range and some were even game enough to feed the more gentle animals in the petting zoo! A great day was had by all.

Students’ Reflections

My experience at the Zoo was both educational and thrilling. Being exposed to a diverse range of animals while being able to link it back to my Science lessons was a very fulfilling experience. Emma Nguyen 9LF

On Monday 26 October the Year 9s went to the Adelaide Zoo. We learnt about biodiversity and adaptations of different animals. I most enjoyed learning about the sea lions and the adaptations that help them survive. Autumn Grooby 9LF

It was an amazing experience because instead of just researching the animal on the computer we actually got to see the animal up close. We were able to look at its amazing features and its habitat. Tahlia Gallasch 9LF

EAL AT CENTRAL MARKET

On Friday 23 October, we walked to the Central Market with Ms Mary Kotsionis to buy fruit to make fruit salad. We also went there to learn about the weight and cost of a variety of fruit. We chose many delightful and delicious fruits for our fruit salad. Did you know that avocado tastes really yummy in fruit salad?

Dear St Aloysius College Parents and Friends,

The school is hosting a study tour of girls from Japan from Sunday 20 March 2016 to Sunday 27 March 2016. It is quite a large tour and they will need to be escorted to and from school each weekday whilst they are here.

We are hoping that some of the school community will be able to assist with hosting this tour as we are short of families who are able to provide transport.

There will be a host payment of $255 for the week and an additional $30 to assist with transport costs.

I feel sure your families will enjoy hosting these lovely girls from Japan and feel enriched by learning about their culture whilst teaching them the Australian way.

If you are able to help, please contact me either by email [email protected] or by calling the office on 8120 2330.

Please note that all members of the hosting family over the age of 15 years will need a Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide Church Police Clearance.

CHANCERY LANE MONTESSORI PRE-SCHOOLOn Tuesday 13 October 2015, Chancery Lane Montessori Preschool was filled with a sea of colour in support of ‘Loud Shirt’ day. We chose to participate in this fundraising event to support two of our current students, Ole and Leon. Some children chose to dress in their brightest or craziest outfit whilst others enjoyed joining in with the festivities.

On the day, the children participated in a range of ‘Loud Shirt’ related activities, such as decorating their own giant paper shirts with loud patterns, spray painting to do some crazy decorations and making wrist bands with lots of small coloured shirt pictures on them.

The children were made aware that all the money raised is given to the First Voice Foundation to give the gift of sound and speech to deaf and hearing impaired children. After many generous donations from the children and families we were able to fundraise a total of $348.50 to support the work of this wonderful organisation and the services it provides to children in our community.

Ole and Leon have personally traced and decorated a thank you note to all their friends and families for their generous support.
