Agreat opportunity for parents with chil-
dren is the Family Art Project, a free
Saturday morning event at Wave Hill,
Bronx-a botanical garden in the Riverdale
neighborhood. The latest family art project,
great for the fall season, was called Printing
the Palisades. An intern at the door of the
Ecology Center building took the parents and
children out on a walk in the woods to gather
some leaves for the project. Then inside Ms.
Rama greeted us and told us about the project
and then read a storybook to children. It was a
story about blowing fall leaves that formed the
Leaf Man. Other times the wind would blow
the leaves and form shapes of birds, mountains
or animals.
In a large room below, art interns told
people how to make this week's project. My
child and I first glued a leaf to a white block
paper for the printing element. Using rollers,
we covered the printing element with blue,
red, yellow or other shades of paint. Then the
ink-heavy print went face down on a large
piece of construction paper, and we rolled it
and peeled off the print. It worked pretty well,
with the leaf portion of the printer coloring thepaper much more heavily than the other areas.
Doing this several times created an interesting
picture, or you could also paint little painted
leaves and glue them to the paper. Finally,
after 2 hours of playing with paint and getting
pretty dirty, we went outside to look at the
exotic plants and trees. We went to where
children played on the large lawn in front of
the Glyndor Gallery, also site of an art exhibit-
Fore-grounding the Palisades. Don't miss the
impressive views from high up, to and across
the Hudson to the Palisades cliffs of New Jer-
sey.
On another recent Family Art project,
families made paper cut-outs of falcons and
other predatory birds. Using pre-made tem-
plates for the different birds' heads made better
bird cut-outs. Another option was tracing a
spiral cutout for a snake from a template, col-
oring it in, and then cutting out the snake.
A different Family Art project had parents and
children going off into the woods to make little
fairy houses out of sticks and leaves, for a pre-
Halloween themed project.
The next couple of weeks have Fami-
ly Art projects with harvest and holiday
themes: Nov 17th is for creating corn husk
dolls; November 24th is for making harvest
time hangings; Dec 1st is the making of festive
candles; and Dec 8th is making hand-drawn
holiday greeting cards.
You can take a free Wave Hill shuttle
bus from the West 241st St stop of the number
1 subway, and admission is free Saturday
mornings before noon. The family art projectruns from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is for children
between 4 and 12 years old. Wave Hill is open
year round. The entrance to Wave Hill is locat-
ed at W 249th Street and Independence
Avenue, and Wave Hill is open from 9 a.m.

ind-Builders Creative Arts Center will
receive the "Partners of Adolescent &
Young Adult Health Program (AYAHP)
Special Recognition Award" sponsored by theBronx Lebanon Hospital Center at their 10th
Anniversary Luncheon Celebration from 12 to 2pm
on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Giovanni's
Restaurant, Bronx, NY for their dedication and
commitment to Bronx teens. The award was estab-
lished by AYAHP to honor and recognize deserv-
ing, supportive organizations from the Bronx area
that support youth.
The award has special meaning to Mind-
Builders Executive Director, Madaha Kinsey-Lamb,
because it will be presented by one of the alumni of
the drama program, Cynthia Lewis, M.D. who is
now Chief of the Division of Adolescent Medicine
and a dedicated pediatrician with the Hospital. Dr.
Lewis says that presenting Mind-Builders with the
award "completes yet another circle" in her life.
AYAHP also partners with Mind-Builders Positive
Youth Troupe, the theatrical training and perfor-
mance program that uses compelling productions
that encourage youth to make healthy choices whenfaced with life's challenges. Dr. Lewis credits this
partnership as contributing to the success of the
AYAHP program.
Ms. Kinsey-Lamb, originally a public
school teacher and arts enthusiast, founded Mind-
Builders Creative Arts Center in 1978, after realiz-
ing there was not an afterschool arts program for her
child in Northeast Bronx.
