Hi and welcome to the Sept/Oct issue of Families Central Scotland. The kids are now back at school and we have a fabulous clubs and classes feature for you. We know that after school activities are not only fun but can also provide our kids with many valuable skills.

There are so many great clubs to choose from in the local area, it is a shame we don’t have more time! However children also need a bit of chill out time so as always we have our useful out and about guide to family friendly events going on in the local area. On page 12 we have some great ideas for the October break and on page 13 some Halloween fun for all. Check out our website on www.familiescentralscotland.co.uk where you will find more articles and information. Follow and ‘like us’ on facebook by clicking on www.facebook.com/FamCS and on twitter twitter.com/FamiliesCentral where you will get regular updates of local events for you and your kids.

If you are interested in advertising with us we are now taking bookings for our Nov/Dec issue which will be our bumper Christmas issue. Deadline for copy and adverts is 1st October so email us at [email protected] for our media pack.

Huge congratulations to Jackie, Families Central Scotland reader, who won the fantastic weekend stay at a Feather Down Farm.

Walk to School October 2012Take the Right Route is an initiative to help reduce congestion, improve levels of health and fitness and improve our local environment throughout the Falkirk Council area.

• Walk Once a Week campaigns• Walking Buses• Pedometer challenges

The success of Take the Right Route: Walk to School is only possible with the support of the school community. If you are interested in learning more about how you or your school can take part in this worthwhile initiative please contact [email protected] or telephone Falkirk Council’s Transport Planning Unit on 01324 504950.

As the new school year starts, so does the time to choose after-school activities, but take a quick look

and you will find a whole range of classes available, from Scouts to Ballet, from French to Karate. How can we know which ones are the best for our child, offer value for money, and critically, which ones they will enjoy!

After-school activities definitely offer value to your children. Reports indicate those who participate in after-school programs have better school attendance, higher grades and loftier aspirations. They’re less likely to get into trouble and are at lower risk of obesity. It is also a great opportunity for children to develop social and leadership skills. The benefits are there, but under which classes?

Talk to your child and find out how they feel about the activity, and let them choose at least one club or activity themselves. Help them choose activities that reflect who they are and what they want to learn, don’t impose your preferences. Explain that it’s

important and fun to try new things, and remember switching activities is normal amongst children.

Always check out the quality of an activity. Discipline-based activities that create a

quality product over a period of time are great, e.g. putting on a play. Don’t think that high cost equal

high quality, some activities are cheaper to run like football. Staff members should

be professionals with skills and

experience. Consider the mix of

activities. The benefits of exercise are huge,

so including a sport would be a good start.

Extracurricular activities are ideal for children to explore and practice what it means to be a group leader, e.g. Brownies. If you are stuck between two similar activities, consider the

usefulness, e.g. drum lessons might be cool, but the guitar might have wider applicability.

Finally, remember logistics. The afterschool programme affects you too. Avoid signing on to too many activities that leave you scrambling from one to the next. No one will have fun doing anything if it means arriving late, leaving early, and going without dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Look hard for places you can walk to, it reduces your carbon footprint while keeping you fit for free! Finally do build in some downtime. Children need to have independent play as well as the structured activities, so ensure time is built in for dinner, watching T.V. and relaxing. Leave some activities perhaps for the summer, when different interests can be tried, without the pressure of school demands.

After-school activities can provide enrichment, adventure and variety. They can enhance knowledge and build character.

Spend a bit more time choosing the right activity programme for your child and you will reap the benefits.

Consideration for special needs children • Consider your child’s interests, rather

than their needs. Many regular activities can use technology or planning to help their participation, e.g. drama, athletics, cooking, academic. Evaluate your child’s stamina. Check they have the energy for an extracurricular activity?

• Talk with the activity leaders about your child’s unique medical and communication needs. Provide them with emergency contact information.

• Make sure family downtime is a regular part of the schedule. Sometimes your family needs to have nothing to do as a group.

Remember the inclusion of children with special needs is beneficial to all. Special needs children achieve more, improve behaviour, and enhance motivation. Children without special needs learn from working cooperatively and grow in confidence through helping others.

Get Ahead with Step AheadNow that the schools have returned

and children are settling into their new classes, you’ll have hopes for your child’s

attainment over the academic year.

But what do you do if you feel your child isn’t attaining as they should and the core basics of education are being overlooked?

Step Ahead Forth Valley can offer dedicated teachers who provide tuition in the key basic skills of reading, writing

and maths. Skills such as grammar, punctuation and spelling are important

elements required in order for children to express themselves in primary school,

secondary and beyond. In these increasingly competitve times, an excellent

representation of yourself in writing is often the difference in getting a foot in

the door and being overlooked.

Step Ahead does not only work with primary school children. We are happy

to say that an increasing number of secondary students have approached us regarding Standard Grade and Higher

preparation. Delighted as we are to help as much as we can, could I suggest that the earlier tuition is begun, the more

marked difference it can make.

So as you get back into the swing of the new school year, please keep Step

Ahead Forth Valley in mind for any issues regarding your child’s education whether

for tuition or for a chat about any concerns. Contact Gail 01259 211218

New Term at Kip McGrath in Stirling

Fiona Macdiarmid and her team at Kip McGrath Stirling are enjoying the start of the new school term. Fiona, who has run the Kip centre for over 10 years, is respected and trusted by many Stirling parents. Along with her dedicated and enthusiastic team of

tutors - all of whom are fully qualified teachers–her aim is to help children

feel more confident about their learning so they can maximise their potential. Kip tutoring is tailored to

individual student’s learning needs and the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of the Kip centre, based at the Stirling

University Innovation Park, provides an ideal location for tutoring.

“There can be many reasons why children need a bit of extra help

outside school” says Fiona, and she stresses that tutoring at Kip does not

replace students’ schoolwork but seeks to complement and enhance it. Fiona explains: “we are very lucky to enjoy a relationship of mutual respect

with many of our students’ schools because we all share the common aim of wishing to see children achieve their

potential”.

Kip McGrath in Stirling offers tutoring sessions after school and on Saturday mornings and an assessment can be arranged free of charge and without

obligation. Kip McGrath, Unit 4, Scion House, Stirling Universtity Innovation

Stuart lives in the Falkirk area with his wife Audrey and daughters Jess and Charley. Stuart is the author of

the hilarious Gorgeous George and the Geriatric Generator (www.mylittlebigtown.com/gorgeousgeorge) available in libraries and good book stores. He has been asked to write a pilot and 13 episodes by the BBC so watch this space! Stuart will be at the Off the Page Book Festival in Stirling for a couple of the schools events. www.stirling.gov.uk/offthepage

Why you like living where you do? Wallacestone is a quiet, peaceful neighbourhood near Falkirk. We have a large garden where we love to grow herbs and vegetables.

Favourite shopWe’re a family of avid readers so our favourite shops would have to be Lit-list Book Shop in Falkirk and Waterstones.

Favourite park Has to be Callendar Park, fantastic space.

Favourite children’s club/classJess is currently going for her black belt with the Falkirk Tae-Kwon-Do club at the Mariner Centre. Charley is our little gymnast at the club at Grangemouth Stadium.

Favourite day out This is a family tradition now. Jumping on the train on a Saturday morning in August and going through to the Edinburgh Festival, taking in a show or two, watching the street entertainment, maybe a quick visit to Chambers St Museum and picnic in Princes St Gardens if the weather’s good. If not, it’s pizza time!

Favourite child friendly restaurant My girls love a fantastic variety of foods. La Banca is a favourite at the moment, our local the Craiglee Inn does the best steak pie EVER!

Best planet saving tipRecycle everything. We do not have an infinite supply of anything on the planet so everything has to be used again and again.

No parent should be withoutChildren with good manners. It is one of my greatest pleasures to take my daughters anywhere. They’re polite, kind and thoughtful and I often cringe when I see the behaviour of some children, and often their parents when we’re out and about. Manners cost nothing and last a lifetime. Parenting pet hatesI hate having to tell the girls to tidy up after themselves but it’s absolutely necessary. It’s usually their bedrooms but it can be scary going into the bathroom in the morning after the girls have been in.

Most embarrassing momentThat would have to be me, aged 44 going on 8. I was heading to the corner shop with Charley on our scooters. I bounced down off the pavement, crossed the road and tried to jump the kerb on the other side, thinking my stunt work was pretty cool.

Unfortunately I clipped the kerb and was sent tumbling, legs over head. I lay there groaning and bleeding, as a lady pretended not to notice but hiding behind her newspaper - I could see her shoulders jiggling up and down.

Funniest comment your kids have ever made As an author I really should write the funny ones down but I’m usually too busy laughing. One of the most philosophical comments came from Charley last week. I was complaining to her that I couldn’t get a song out of my head, to which she replied “Dad, you should always have a song in your head.”

Favourite family holiday spotWe love Florida. The weather, the theme parks and the choice of restaurants make it perfect for us.

Most loved children’s bookAnything by Roald Dahl. The Twits would be my favourite. Nobody writes stuff like this for children anymore, it’s so dark and un-PC – gluing birds onto branches, then pulling their legs off and eating them – brilliant!

Kids love yucky humour but are often forced to read what adults think they should be reading, rather than what they’d enjoy themselves. For me, just helping children develop a love for reading is the most important thing.

Best childrens DVD or TV programmeJess, Charley and I love watching Dr Who but Audrey’s not a fan. Audrey (and the rest of us) could watch Mary Poppins a million times.

This Autumn at Edinburgh Zoo…

Summer may be over but there are still lots of fantastic reasons to visit Edinburgh Zoo. Edinburgh Zoo is home to over 1,000 rare and wonderful animals. Highlights include the UK’s only koalas, our cheeky chimpanzees in Budongo Trail, our family of meerkats and of course, giant pandas, Tian Tian and Yang Guang! Our animal collection is constantly evolving so there is always something new to see!

This Autumn, Edinburgh Zoo is delighted to announce it will be launching its second pre-school events schedule. Following on from the huge success of the initial series, Edinburgh Zoo will be hosting a range of fantastic activities and workshops aimed at youngsters aged 6 months to 5 years from mid-September until the end of November. From arts and crafts to music and dance, there will be plenty to keep your little ones entertained. October will also see the launch of this year’s “Creepy Crawlies” event – if your kids are a fan of bugs and beasties, this is an event not to be missed!

There is also a fantastic series of daily animal talks for visitors to enjoy featuring our sun bears, rhinos and brilliant birds amongst others. And if it weather gets a bit chilly as you wander around exploring the Zoo, pop into one of our great catering outlets for a hot snack or a nice cuppa to warm you up.

For more information about upcoming events visit www.edinburghzoo.org.uk

Halloween Time

I have to admit I do enjoy Halloween. We decorate the house with pumpkin lanterns and a few spooky items and then all get

dressed up! It’s fun inviting a few friends round to play some games and then to go out guising and perform our ‘wee turn’! We always pre-warn those we will visit and they are only people we know, which is important at Halloween as not everyone wants a knock at the door! Here are a few ideas for Halloween and some events happening locally. You will find more Halloween activities and recipes on our website www.familiescentralscotland.co.uk

Halloween JokesWhat did the mummy ghost say to the baby ghost? Don’t spook until your spoken to!What do ghosts serve for desert? Ice Scream! What do you call a ghost with a broken leg? A hoblin goblin!

Top 3 Halloween gamesWrap the mummy – Buy lots of cheap toilet roll and split into teams. Allocate one person from each team to be the mummy, the others in the team are the mummy wrappers. Give a time limit to cover the mummy from head to toe in toilet roll – the team with the best wrapped mummy are the winners(or the team that make you laugh the most - this is a hoot for the players and the audience!)

Taste-tastic – Prepare a large plate with tiny tastes of 10 edible items (jam, marmite, toothpaste, tomato ketchup….) Then number each item. One person is blindfolded and they have to say a number between 1 and 10. Put

a taste of that item on their tongue and they have to guess the taste- you can be kind or a bit naughty with your selection of tastes!

Pumpkin roll – Determine a starting line and a finish line. Set 2 pumpkins on their sides at the start and get the racers to line up behind them. At “GO” each challenger uses a sturdy broom to propel the pumpkin over the finish line.

Autumn Adventures at The National Wallace Monument

School holidays are the ideal time to enjoy Stirling’s heritage - and a great place to start is the city’s famous National Wallace Monument. Even before arriving at the Monument itself, there are woodland walks and trails - with magnificent views - to follow on the Abbey Craig, the rock on which the Monument stands.

Once inside - there are galleries displaying Sir William Wallace’s famous battlesword and re-telling the story of his life. Continuing upwards towards the Crown - where the views are even more spectacular! - there is the Hall of Heroes to visit; here the achievements of other famous Scottish figures are recognised.

Special activities from 15th to 26th October 2012 will see costumed actors telling the story of Wallace and his victory at The Battle of Stirling Bridge, and there will be challenges for younger visitors to take on with special games and quizzes, including a hunt for William Bear!
