Protect your children’s vision from harmful UV rays With summer on the way, it’s likely that you’re looking forward to spending lots of time outdoors with your children. It’s great to enjoy the sunshine but did you know that 80% of eye damage due to exposure to harmful UV rays occurs before the age of 18? Worryingly two thirds of parents don’t protect their kids eyes in the sun. This means that these children- and babies - are risking eye damage every time they go outside. Independent optician Ochil Eyes specializes in children eye care and has a huge range of prescription and non prescription sunglasses for kids. Parent and owner Mary Docherty advises parents to ensure their children wear sunglasses even on cloudy summer days. She says “Look out for sunglasses that block out 99% of UVA and UVB and always speak to an optician if you have any questions or concerns about your children’s eye health” To arrange an eye examination for your child simply contact the friendly team at Ochil Eyes on 01259 752755 Ochil Eyes, 105 High Street Tillicoultry. The Gillespie Macandrew Hopetoun International Horse Trials 16th – 19th June: so much more than just the horses….

An action-packed weekend of family fun alongside top level international equestrian sport awaits spectators at Hopetoun International 2016. Ranked as one of Scotland’s premier equestrian events, Hopetoun Horse Trials is set against the stunning backdrop of Scotland’s finest stately home on the banks of the Forth. Some of the world’s best-known event riders such as Zara Phillips, Sir Mark Todd, Lucinda Fredericks and Nicola Wilson have all competed at Hopetoun since the first international competition.

However, Hopetoun 2016 is shaping up to be so much more than just the horses. There is a bigger than ever line up of entertainment with something to amuse all ages and interests. With a family dog show, stalls selling everything from high end country clothing to artisan beef burgers, dog agility and an array of childrens’ entertainers, there will be enough to keep even the most seasoned event-goer busy. Ruby Ruby - Dunblane and Doune

After opening our doors in Doune on 2nd May last year, Ruby Ruby has gone from strength to strength and we were fast finding out we just weren’t big enough. So, we opened a second Ruby Ruby on 26 March in Dunblane, just opposite the train station (8 Stirling Road, FK15).

We had a fantastic opening day, including a visit from the beautiful Princess Ana and Else from Shooting Starz, the gorgeous Gina Mckie from Radio Clyde 1 came and drew our Petasil Fit For Kids Win A Bike Competition, and a very energetic Easter Bunny took all our kids on an Easter Egg hunt up the High Street of Dunblane and managed to stop at the Golden Postbox, which was so beautifully decorated by the talented florist Trudi Todd. We had a magical day and had a wonderful first week in Dunblane meeting lots of lovely children and parents. Please do come and see us if you haven’t been already. We have a fantastic collection of shoes from top brands including StartRite, GEOX, Petasil, Superfit, Richter, Froddo, Lelli Kelly, Vans and many more. Clubs and Classes

The long summer holidays are fast approaching and, if your kids are anything like ours, after a few days of

playing at home they will be telling you they are bored and looking for the next activity to keep them occupied.

There are so many places to go and things to do over the holidays. Why not try a summer club, class or activity? From music, singing, drama and being creative with Lego to rugby, cycling, swimming, tennis, squash, canoeing, martial arts, learning a new language or instrument, trampolining or playing golf, there are lots to choose from. Some classes are specifically for babies and toddlers, others for older children and some even for mums and dads, so there is no excuse for not joining in! There are also extra tuition classes on offer to allow children to catch up during the holidays or just be prepared for the start of the new school year.

Whist we know life can be very busy clubs and classes can have great benefits for you and your children. Here are Families Central Scotland’s top 5 reasons for trying out a club or class with your wee one. • For new mums and dads life can be

a bit overwhelming at times, clubs and classes help you get out and

meet other people and you can form strong friendships for the future

• Sometimes children can struggle at school but an after school club or class can help them feel good at something outside of school and help build their confidence and self esteem.

• School can sometimes involve a great deal of concentration and sitting still so an active club or class can help children let off steam

• Clubs and classes are a great chance to try out a new skill or discover a new talent. They can help kids grow in confidence and learn valuable social skills.

• Active/sporty classes can help with fitness, motor skills and teamwork, for classes such as music or languages these can help with concentration and give your child a great sense of achievement.

Many clubs and classes offer free trials or special holiday classes over the summer break – why not try one, and then book an ongoing class for September?Read on over the next few pages for information on some great local clubs and classes and check out our local directory on www.familiescentralscotland.co.uk

Hi, I’m Daniela Logie and I live in Stenhousemuir with my husband Andrew and my two children Alessio (6) and Reuben (2). I grew up in a small village in Italy and moved to the UK in my early twenties. As well as going to play dates, soft play, parks and all the other fun things mums get to do, since last September I have started running Italian for All. These are Italian classes at beginner, intermediate and higher intermediate levels. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to use your native language and share your passion for your country with other people. In the past year I have had the privilege of meeting wonderful folk; students, mums in search of a hobby, professionals looking to improve their skills, retired people and holidaymakers. This is because Italian for All really does suit everyone! So, whether you are planning a holiday, you always fancied learning Italian, or if you are looking to brush up your existing skills please get in touch on www.italianforall.co.uk or call me on 07833994990.

Why you like living where you do? The Larbert-Stenhousemuir area is great as it’s bang in the middle between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Having a train station and good transport links makes it really easy to access lots of different places. It is very close to Falkirk, has good schooling and good walks in the Carron Dams, a Local Nature Reserve.

Favourite shop Hobbycraft in Falkirk, it has lots of craft supplies and craft ideas for kids as well as running its own workshops.

Favourite parkThere are so many to chose from! Dollar Park because it’s ideal for young children, kids love running up and down the great grassy slope. Plean Country Park is also a great place to observe nature. There are large picnic areas, woodland paths and a new open rustic playground.

Favourite children’s club/classThe Friday Focus group, for parents and children at Larbert Baptist Church. This is every Friday at 9.30 during term time. There

are lots of friendly faces, a good selection of toys to play with and a craft corner for children. The Central Taekwondo Academy also offers brilliant classes for school aged children.

Favourite day outWeather permitting, Blackness Castle is a lovely place to visit. A 15th Century fortress overlooking the River Forth, a perfect setting for knight and sword adventure games, especially if it’s quiet! My boys loved hiding in all the nooks and crannies and guessing where the dragon was hidden. There is a small pebbly beach nearby where children like to play.

Favourite child friendly restaurantThe Kincardine Way pub as it has a nice softplay area which is suitable for young children.

Favourite night out without the kidsGoing to my favourite restaurant, Fratelli Sarti, on Renfield Street in Glasgow, followed by a few cheeky cocktails!

Proudest eco-friendly momentThis has to be when we got our solar panels installed.

No parent should be withoutBlackout curtains mean you can enjoy a couple of extra hours sleep in summer if you are lucky and baby wipes, of course, for sticky fingers, ice cream covered toddlers, emergency spills and the obvious!

Parenting pet hatesClearing mashed up Weetabix or porridge dribbles from clothes and chipping off dried on Weetabix or porridge from wherever it lands.

Most embarrassing momentWhen your three year old shouts “COOL PANTS MUMMY!” in the swimming pool changing cubicle.

Favourite family holiday spotThis has to be the small village on the border between Tuscany and Liguria, where I grew up. We all enjoy the lovely scenery, the beautiful weather, the healthy food and building sand castles on the beach.

Most successful recipe/foodMix a few tablespoons of pesto with one or two tablespoon of crème fraîche and you have a lovely sauce you can combine with pasta, fish or even chicken, my kids really enjoy this.

Any other commentBoth my children have an understanding of Italian, I like to involve the language in everyday life as I feel this is a really positive way of giving them a different outlook, of stimulating their little minds and opening them to other cultures.

How to Help Your Child Enjoy Bedtime Reading

by Justine Crow

We’ve all been there – it’s bedtime, everybody is tired and a little grumpy. The answer is a good bedtime story.

It’s never too early to start a bedtime story routine. Babies are soothed by the sound of your voice, so take a comfy chair and pick a book. Soon, your baby will recognise this as their bedtime story moment. When they are older, reading together is an opportunity to bond and to establish a good bedtime routine. For older children, this is the perfect time to explore your child’s imagination. Consistency is good and a regular treat at bedtime gives your child something to look forward to. It also enforces the idea of reading as a positive thing. When choosing books, choose a calming story to help your child drift off. Repetition is useful, such as in Where the Wild Things Are when Max retraces his journey back to bed.

Soon you will be able to choose long stories and break them up into manageable chapters. As your child grows older and can read by themselves, encourage their interest in a story by reading the first part to them at bedtime, then allow them to continue the story by themselves the next day. Try to discuss the book and explain any ‘big’ words to improve vocabulary. As the books become more difficult, the number of images often decreases but pictures are still important. Children still take pleasure in glancing at illustrations. By the time they are able to read without help, it’s time to allow them to read for themselves. It’s a good idea to set a time limit before lights out. Don’t abandon reading together completely; finish a chapter to save tired eyes occasionally.

Bedtime stories can be useful and educational too; they can offer a way of sharing news and encouraging positive emotions, such as when there is a baby on the way, when your child is preparing to go to a new playgroup or school, or learning to swim. Local bookshops and libraries can advise you on the best titles and many online book companies categorise books by subject. Have a quick read through the book yourself before sharing it with your child to make sure it says what you want it to.

Having time to ourselves with a great book is something that adults really appreciate and once they’ve got the hang of it, children also benefit from winding down with something to read. In the words of Dr Suess: “Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.”

Justine Crow is the author of The Little Book of Nits published by Bloomsbury. Parent of three, she owns her own bookshop with her partner, The Bookseller Crow on Hill, and is a qualified swimming teacher. And in what little spare time she has, she also runs gastronomic writing retreat courses in France and is the food critic of The Transmitter.

The great FREE LibraryThe Library is a fantastic resource and a great place to

give your child a social experience of reading – they can browse, talk about books, compare books and discover which books they like best. When homework involves

research the library is the perfect place to visit and it’s all FREE!!! You can take out books, audio books, CDS, DVDs

and download e-books.

For the under 5s there are regular Bookbug, Storytime and Rhymetime sessions and for children aged 5-12 there are

Chatterbooks sessions . Some libraries provide teenage Book

Clubs and groups for adults.

Give your local library a call to find out more!!!
