A Message from the Executive Director In early spring, I was honoured to assume my new role as Executive Director for the Caledon Parent-Child Centre following the retirement of our friend and long-standing leader, Maureen Thornton. Over the span of Maureen’s 18 years of service, she was instrumental in advocating for funding and developing partnerships to support in-creased services that addressed the emerging needs of Caledon families. We are grateful for the key role she played in the Centre’s evolution and success.

Amidst change, our commitment to the families and children of Caledon remains strong. As we look ahead, our new strategic plan will provide a roadmap for a collec-tive vision of our desired future to “strengthen families for a brighter tomorrow”. Through diverse stakeholder consultations, long-range organizational goals have been established to meet anticipated changes and increased demand for services. Seven strategic priorities, in four operational areas, were identified that build on the Cen-tre’s success to-date, and stretch the organization towards continuous improvement. For a summary of our strategic plan, visit our website at www.cp-cc.org.

Throughout its history, the Centre has played an indispensable role in the lives of the families and children of Caledon -- offering a continuum of services that strengthen families and assist them in the critical role of raising young children. Of course, our work would not be possible without the dedication and support of our Board, staff, volunteers, funders, donors, and community partners. Working together, you all play a pivotal role in the incredible circle of support that surrounds the families and chil-dren of our community.

Maureen Thornton (past CPCC Executive Director) presents Hal Gregory (McDonald’s Bolton Owner) with a certificate recognizing McDonald’s generosity at the CPCC Donor Recognition Event in 2008.

Recognizing Our Financial Supporters Through the years – how donations to the CPCC have

enhanced the lives of children and families…

Today, families are faced with a variety of stresses and challenges and many find themselves parenting in isolation. CPCC’s programs assist families and parents in nurturing a strong and safe environment to help ensure their children thrive. Due to growing fiscal constraints over the years, we have relied on the generosity of the community to maintain basic programming.

Funding to Ontario Early Years agencies has been frozen since 2003. The result: Families who can benefit from our most important programming are being\chosen by lottery. Through their financial support, businesses like Silcotech North America Inc., help to maintain and enhance programming. Silcotech has been in business since 1999 and has been an active community partner of the CPCC for over 12 years. At the 2012 Children’s Christmas party, Isolde Boettger, Vice

President of Silcotech, mentioned that she enjoys seeing the families the company is helping to support and commended the CPCC on the important work they do in the community. Silcotech’s sponsorship and the proceeds of the Children’s Christmas Party are utilized to maintain and enhance programming to provide every child with the best possible start in life.

As the Caledon population grows, so does the demand for our programs and services. Unrestricted financial contributions from dedicated supporters, like McDonald’s Restaurant (Bolton), provide the CPCC the flexibility to develop innovative programs and services to meet the growing and changing needs of Caledon families. In 1998, owner of McDonald’s (Bolton), Hal Gregory, made a pledge to donate a percentage of their sales from the first Monday of every month. Their monthly donation continues today, and is a testament to McDonalds, Bolton’s commitment to supporting children in their community. The Centre has also been the grateful local recipient of the McHappy Day proceeds for many years. The financial contributions of McDonald’s to the CPCC over the past 15 years totals $36,000, which is equivalent to the cost of replacing the van that enables the CPCC to provide programming to the children and families of the “Villages of Caledon.”

Through the years, CPCC families thank Isolde Boettger for Silcotech’s contribution to CPCC’s work, and their families!

Many times in the last few decades, r e search has shown tha t the environment in which a person is raised has significant impact on their future health and well-being. The family home, relationships and parenting practises all affect intellectual, physical, social and emotional development.

Most parents agree that parenting their children is the most important and fulfilling task in life, but parenting can also be frustrating and confusing. Children don’t come with handbooks and every child is unique. They learn differently, respond differently and have ever changing needs.

When we are employed, staying current in our job usually requires that we obtain new skills and keep up to date with research, methods and knowledge. We problem-solve and practice new strategies to deal with new situations that could arise. We work individually and in teams to resolve issues and address concerns related to our jobs.

When it comes to parenting, we are bombarded regularly with new research. Studies in human growth and development are discovering new information almost daily and our knowledge of the human brain is constantly increasing.

What parent wouldn’t be overwhelmed trying to keep up with all of this information? It’s a responsibility that can weigh heavy on us all.

The Caledon Parent-Child Centre is creating opportunities that will assist

parents to enrich their knowledge on child development and learn effective parenting methods. Attending a parent enrichment session is a commitment to our children and our own role as a parent. Parents who participate in parent enrichment workshops will enhance their “parenting toolbox” and leave with new options to parent their children positively and effectively.

Parents who attend these sessions hope to strengthen their confidence in parenting, want to be prepared to face new challenges and help their family get along cooperatively. They would like to have more tools they can use and additional ideas to try.

Parenting enrichment workshops are an investment in your personal growth, your child’s health and well-being and your family foundation.

Watch for further information and opportunities on our website.
