West Virginia finished with an 8-5 record in 2015, capped by an exciting 43-42 victory over Arizona State in the Cactus Bowl. The eight victories were the most by a Mountaineer team since becoming a Big 12 Conference member in 2012. The Mountaineers had a strong finish, winning five of their last six games and look to carry that momentum throughout the spring and into the 2016 season. Heading into spring practice, West Virginia returns 33 lettermen, including 13 starters, and 22 players with at least one game of starting experience. As with each spring, there will be open competition at each position as starters have to be identified and depth has to be developed. “We have a lot of bodies out there, and we have a lot of guys who have been in the program for some time,” coach Dana Holgorsen said. “I have 22 seniors. Last year, we had a big senior class, and I think it paid dividends when things got tough. We finished the year really well. Next year, we are looking for it to be the same way. We have a lot of seniors and a lot of juniors who have been in the program. That’s just the start of what this 2016 team is going to be like.”

OFFENSE Eighteen lettermen return on offense, including eight starters and 15 players with starting experience from 2015. Four of the five starters on the offensive line are back, and the quarterback, fullback and three of the four starting receivers return. Starters must be replaced at left tackle, running back and tight end, and depth must be developed at running back.

Quarterback Senior Skyler Howard started all 13 games last season and is back for his final season. Redshirt sophomore William Crest Jr, sophomore David Sills and redshirt freshman Chris Chugunov will battle Howard for snaps this spring and freshman Cody Saunders will be in the mix. “Skyler has played a lot of football,” Holgorsen said. “We know what he can do as far as that is concerned. His numbers are great. Let’s not forget that this kid had the second-most passing yards in a game in the history of this program. With that said, we know (redshirt freshman quarterback Chris Chugunov) Chugs can throw the ball. He will get plenty of opportunities to be able to prove that he can be the starter. Howard completed 221-of-403 passes for 3,145 yards and 26 touchdowns as the starter in 2015. He saved his best game against Arizona State in the Cactus Bowl, throwing for 532 yards and five touchdowns, second-best performance in school history.

Crest saw limited action behind center, Sills played wide receiver and Chugunov redshirted. Crest will see time at quarterback and receiver, and Sills is competing at quarterback this spring. “He’s (Sills) in the quarterback room. He wants to be a quarterback,” Holgorsen said. “(Redshirt sophomore quarterback William) Will (Crest Jr.) bounces around a lot. He has been in the quarterback room for two years now. David moves back and forth a little bit. We will let it play out and see how it looks.”

Running Back The WVU rushing attack was one of the offensive strengths in 2015, registering 2,967 yards and 25 touchdowns. It averaged 4.8 yards per carry and 228.2 yards per game, ranking No. 2 in the Big 12 and No. 16 nationally. This year, the position is the biggest area of concern on offense after losing major production from Big 12 Conference rushing champion Wendell Smallwood to the NFL. He posted career-best numbers, finishing with 1,519 yards rushing and nine touchdowns, along with 26 catches for 160 yards. “This is one of our areas of concern,” Holgorsen said. “It will be interesting to see how this spring goes with the returning players, who steps up and earns playing time. Then we have signed several more backs. It’s important to have numbers at this position.” As has been proven since joining the Big 12, a stable of running backs is a must to be successful so a starter and depth have to be developed this spring. Redshirt senior Rushel Shell and redshirt junior Jacky Marcellus return. Freshman Kennedy McKoy enrolled in January and will battle for time. Shell was the Mountaineers’ second-leading ball carrier last season, finishing with 708 yards and eight touchdowns and added 16 catches for 101 yards. Howard finished with 502 yards and six touchdowns, and Crest had 107 yards and a touchdown. At fullback, Elijah Wellman returns for his junior season. He is a good blocker, who can run the ball or catch it out of the backfield. He finished with 73 yards rushing and two touchdowns and had five catches for 16 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Ferns, a redshirt sophomore transfer from Michigan and redshirt junior converted linebacker Alex Brooks will add depth.

Offensive Line The offensive line powered the Mountaineer running attack last year and looks to have a solid foundation returning. Senior Marquis Lucas was the lone departure, so the search is on for his replacement, and depth is always needed on the line. “O-line has a lot of guys back,” Holgorsen said. “I feel good about it. Right now, it’s about health.” Seven lettermen, including five players with multiple starts, return. Three returnees (Kyle Bosch, Tyler Orlosky and Adam Pankey) logged more than 750 snaps each last year and three others (Yodny Cajuste, Marcell Lazard and Tony Matteo) were used on more than 450 snaps apiece. The leader once again will be redshirt senior All-American candidate Orlosky, who returns for his third year as the starting center. He has played in 37 career games and started 29. The All-Big 12 Conference performer graded out 90 percent or better in every game and was one of two lineman who started every game at his original position. Pankey returns at left guard for the second year and third year as a starter. He has played in 33 career games and started 25. Redshirt sophomore Bosch started all 13 games at right guard in his first season at WVU.

Redshirt sophomore Cajuste started the first half of the season at right tackle before a knee injury at Baylor forced him to miss the final five games of the regular season. He returned for the bowl game and this spring is the starter at left tackle. Redshirt junior Lazard replaced Cajuste after he went down and finished the last half of the season as the starter at right tackle and is listed as No. 1 at that position. Matteo and Grant Lingafelter saw action in 2015 and will add depth at the guard positions. Matteo played in 12 games and started one and Lingafelter was used in nine games. Redshirt junior Brendan Willis and redshirt freshman Matt Jones look to add to the mix. Adding depth at center will be redshirt sophomore Amanii Brown, who played in five games last year, and redshirt freshman Jah’Shaun Seider, who redshirted. Redshirt senior Sylvester Townes, who saw limited action, and redshirt freshman Rob Dowdy look to add depth at left tackle, and redshirt freshman Colton McKivitz and redshirt sophomore Dontae Angus will battle for playing time at right tackle.

Wide Receiver Last year, the Mountaineer receiving corps was young and inexperienced, but by the time the season ended a solid front line group was established. The coaching staff will count on them for improvement and consistency, while looking for others to build depth. Senior Daikiel Shorts Jr. and redshirt junior Shelton Gibson have played multiple years in the offense, while sophomore Gary Jennings and redshirt junior Ka’Raun White showed flashes of outstanding ability in their first years in the program.

“I would be surprised if these receivers don’t turn some heads this spring,” Holgorsen said. “Shelton (Gibson) looks great, Ka’Raun (White) looks great, Gary Jennings looks great. Devonte Mathis looks like he has decided he wants to contribute. Daikiel (Shorts Jr.) has made a bunch of plays. William Crest has done a whole bunch of things for us, so don’t be surprised to see him lined up in a bunch of different spots like he has. Ricky Rogers is doing some things.” Shorts played in 13 games and started 10 on the inside and led the 2015 squad with 45 catches for 528 yards and five touchdowns. Gibson started all 13 games on the outside and led with 887 yards and nine touchdowns on 37 catches. White played in nine games and started the final two on the outside, finishing with 15 catches for 275 yards. Jennings played in 13 games as a backup on the inside and had seven catches for 116 yards and a touchdown. Crest and Sills also will see action as a receiver. Crest finished with four catches for 29 yards, and Sills had seven catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner score in the Cactus Bowl. Redshirt senior Mathis and redshirt sophomore Rogers have been in the program for a few years and look for time on the field, along with freshman Marcus Simms.

Tight End Cody Clay, who was an outstanding blocker in the backfield and on the line for the past several years has graduated so there will be a position battle this spring. Redshirt junior Jon Lewis, who moved from defensive line, along with redshirt freshmen Stone Wolfley and Matt Vucelik will compete for time at the vacated position. Ferns and Wellman, also used at fullback, will be in the mix and will be used at both positions.

DEFENSE Graduation hit the defensive unit hard as 12 lettermen, including seven starters, are gone from last year’s team. That senior group established the foundation for coordinator Tony Gibson’s defensive scheme and ranked among the nation’s best in several categories. A majority of that group are taking their talents to the next level and looking to play in the NFL. In order for that unit to have been good, it had to have excellent depth. That depth from 2015 is now on stage and ready to show its talent. Fourteen lettermen, including four starters and seven players with starting experience, return in 2016. The defensive line returns two of three starters and two of the three starting safeties are back. However, the linebacker unit lost all three starters and both starting cornerbacks are gone. In addition to new faces on the field, two coaches were added in the offseason with Matt Caponi hired to oversee the safeties and Blue Adams the cornerbacks.

Defensive Line With two of the three starters, along with quality experience returning, the defensive line is the deepest area on the defense heading into spring. Senior Darrien Howard will start the spring as the leading replacement at nose tackle and then depth along the line will have to be developed. “We have 10 bodies on the d-line that we can practice right now,” Holgorsen said. “(Assistant coach/defensive line) Coach Tall has done a great job. That’s where it starts. We are in a pretty good spot at the position, and that is a good start defensively.” Redshirt seniors Noble Nwachukwu and Christian Brown return as starters, and Howard and redshirt sophomore Jaleel Fields are back with experience. Redshirt junior Xavier Pegues, redshirt freshmen Alec Shriner and Adam Shuler, along with freshman mid-year enrollees Reese Donahue and Jeffery Pooler, will battle for playing time this spring. Brown and Nwachukwu started all 13 games at the ends in 2015. Nwachukwu led the WVU defense in sacks (8.5) and tackles for loss (13.0) and finished with 47 tackles, including 37 unassisted tackles. Nwachukwu was No. 5 in the Big 12 in sacks and No. 12 in tackles for loss. Brown had 33 tackles, including 24 solo stops, two sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss. Howard played in 13 games and finished with 16 tackles, including 13 unassisted stops, a sack and three tackles for loss. Fields played in four games and finished with eight tackles.

Linebackers This is one of the positions with a great amount of concern on the defense. All three starting linebackers, Jared Barber, Nick Kwiatkoski and Shaq Petteway, the team’s top three tacklers from a year ago are gone, and their production has to be replaced for the 2016 season. “Linebacker is a little bit of a concern, just because we lost five seniors,” Holgorsen said. “You have to pinpoint that, but we brought in a lot of guys. We are going to have some young guys come in and be able to contribute. “We have (junior linebacker) Xavier Preston, (redshirt junior linebacker Al-Rasheed) Benton and (redshirt senior linebacker) Sean Walters. Those guys have played, but the seniors took a lot of reps. That’s a concern.” Redshirt senior Justin Arndt and junior Preston at the sam linebacker, redshirt junior Benton at the mike and redshirt senior Walters at the will leads the returning group.

Also battling to get time on the field will be redshirt junior Hodari Christian (mike), redshirt freshman David Long (will) and mid-year enrollee freshman Logan Thimons (mike). Long was the scout team defensive player of the year. Arndt, Benton, Preston and Walters were also productive on special teams. Benton played in 13 games, finishing with 21 tackles, including 14 solo stops and four tackles for loss. Preston saw action in all 13 games and finished with 18 tackles, including three tackles for loss and Arndt played in all 13 games and saw extensive time on special teams, registering 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Walters played in 12 games and had 18 tackles, including 15 unassisted tackles and a sack.

SECONDARY Last year’s secondary also was productive, but this year it is also is an area of concern. Two of the three safeties return, but both cornerbacks are gone. “We lost some pretty good ones at safety,” Holgorsen said. “Karl (Joseph) is going to be the No. 1 safety taken in the draft, and we didn’t have him for a whole year. We have (Redshirt senior safety) Jarrod Harper and (junior safety) Jeremy Tyler. (Junior safety) Dravon (Askew-Henry) is going to step in and do things. You say ‘how are you going to replace those two guys?’ but we are replacing them with guys who are seniors now as opposed to last time we replaced the positions with guys who were freshmen. It is nice not to replace them with freshmen. Corner is going to be interesting to watch. (Redshirt senior cornerback) Rasul (Douglas) and (redshirt senior cornerback) Antonio Crawford are seniors who have a lot of experience.” Junior Askew-Henry returns at free safety after starting all 13 games in 2015. He was WVU’s fourth-leading tackler with 59 stops, including 47 unassisted tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception and four pass breakups. Adding depth will be redshirt senior Khairi Shariff, also a productive special teams member last season, who had six tackles, including five solo stops last year. Jarrod Harper had to replace Joseph five games in the season when Joseph sustained a year-ending knee injury. Harper did an admirable job, finishing with 46 tackles, including 29 unassisted tackles, three tackles for loss, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery. However, he will have sit out for the spring after having offseason shoulder surgery. Tyler, redshirt junior Shane Commodore and redshirt freshman Kevin Williams will compete for playing time this spring. Tyler played in 12 games in 2015 and finished with 20 tackles, including two pass breakups, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Commodore saw limited action and Williams redshirted. Marvin Gross played behind KJ Dillon at spur safety last year and is making his case for the starting job this spring. He played in all 13 games and finished with 15 tackles, including 10 unassisted tackles. Redshirt freshman Deomonte Lindsay and mid-year enrollee freshman Dylan Tonkery will compete for playing time. Redshirt senior Nana Kyeremeh and redshirt senior transfer Antonio Crawford will compete at the field cornerback spot and redshirt senior Rasul Douglas is the leader for the boundary corner spot this spring. Kyeremeh played in all 13 games last season and added valuable depth. He finished with 20 tackles, including 15 unassisted tackles, an interception, a pass breakup and a forced fumble. Crawford transferred from Miami last season and sat out to complete transfer requirements. Douglas got a late start last season and came into his own as the season progressed. He played in 11 games and contributed eight tackles, an interception, a pass breakup and a forced fumble. Mid-year enrollee freshman Jacquez Adams will add depth at the field corner and his twin brother, Jordan, redshirted last year and will add depth at the boundary corner.

Special Teams Punter Nick O’Toole and long snapper John DePalma graduated and will have to be replaced. Jennings returns as a punt and kickoff returner, and Gibson is back returning kickoffs. Redshirt sophomore punter Billy Kinney added depth behind O’Toole and will see his first action this spring. Redshirt junior Nick Meadows and redshirt sophomore RC Brunstetter, who transferred last fall from NC State, will compete for the long snapping duties.

Redshirt junior Mike Molina saw limited action last year and is the kicker this spring. He also will compete with Kinney for kickoff duties. Jennings will be the leading candidate for punt return duties. He finished last season with 13 returns for 69 yards with a long of 21 yards. Gibson handled kickoff returning duties last year. He finished with 11 returns for 361 yards, averaging 32.8 yards per return. He returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown at Baylor.

2016 Schedule The Mountaineers face another tough schedule in 2016. WVU has seven home dates, one neutral site game in Landover, Maryland, and five road contests. West Virginia opens its season at home against SEC foe Missouri, before facing FCS opponent Youngstown State and then BYU at FedExField, home of the Washington Redskins. In Big 12 competition, West Virginia plays host to Kansas State, TCU, Kansas, Oklahoma and Baylor and travel to Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Texas and Iowa State.
