Slovenia is a small but wonderful country with a well-developed economic and social system: it is a part of a vast European Union as well as of the global world. In its development plans Slovenia places emphasis on service industries. Logistics is one of them, but when compared with others, it is distinguished by its high value added. It is well known that we travel for different reasons – including totally irrational ones, however, all our travels utilize logistics services. The sole aim of goods and capital flows, on the other hand, is to increase their value. Due to exceptional needs for the movement of goods, as supply and demand have generally long been separated spatially and temporally, there is a huge need for logistics services worldwide. The logistics services market is thus the world’s biggest marketplace where hundreds of millions are traded annually. Logistics market constitutes the biggest share of the market pie also in our country.

There is much interest in the study of logistic in Slovenia, which is not surprising since Slovenia is an open European country whose young citizens have broad knowledge and are world oriented citizens of the European Union, who know that the profession of a logistics graduate is ranked among the ten most wanted professions.

Although the faculty is relatively young, we are achieving our goals, which are included in our strategic guidelines. We participate in the international education and research networks, which is above all enabled by the international accreditation ECBE (European Council for Business Education). Upon attaining the latter, the Faculty of Logistics committed itself to continually improve and upgrade pedagogical and research work.Nowadays we certainly cannot imagine the quality of modern study without the use of cutting-edge information communication technology, which at the Faculty of Logistics is based on e-learning.

I constantly use the word study instead of learning as study is more than just learning; study includes both gaining new knowledge and simultaneous recognition of new problems as well as finding solutions to problems and forming new realisations, it thus combines elements of learning and researching.Logistics is a very rewarding subject for study and research. Because of its relative underdevelopment, it offers many research possibilities and thus rich selection of topics to be studied, which can present completely personal challenges.

The staff of the Faculty of Logistics will strive to attain excellence in study and to equip you with the knowledge which you will need to become competent and competitive professionals in the European labour market. I would like to invite you to enter the world of logistics and to choose to study at the Faculty of Logistics.

Full Professor Martin Ivan Lipičnik, PhDThe Dean of the Faculty of Logistics at the University of Maribor

THE OVERALL GOAL OF THE FACULTY OF LOGISTICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARIBOR IS TO EDUCATE PROFESSIONALS WITH CUTTING-EDGE KNOWLEDGE, WHO ARE QUALIFIED FOR DIRECT RESPONSIBLE WORK AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH WORK IN THE BROAD INTERDISCIPLINARY FIELD OF LOGISTICS AND FOR THE INTEGRATION OF LOGISTICS IN BUSINESS AND RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT.

BLEND FLThe Faculty of Logistics at the University of Maribor offers study which is a combination of conventional study and learning based on information communication technology. The abovementioned study has been adapted to the needs of the Faculty and named BLEND FL. In blended learning a part of student work is transferred to a virtual classroom.

E-materialsUpon entering the system BLEND FL, students get everything they need for a successful study, which includes traditional face to face lectures combined with study instructions, timetables and study materials. The Faculty of Logistics at the University of Maribor is one the first in Slovenia to offer e-materials and e-learning which are technically and content-wise accomplished.

»The importance and usefulness of e-materials is especially evident with students who are

STUDY AT THE FACULTY OF LOGISTICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARIBORprofessionally involved in sport, art, music or any other activity which takes much of student time. E-materials, which students can access via the Internet wherever they may be, enable these students to study and take exams with their classmates. System BLEND FL furthermore provides them with all the information on what students and lecturers agree on in lectures, which they could otherwise learn only if they attended lectures in person. Although these students often cannot attend lectures, this systems allows them uninterrupted study. When absent, their work relies on the use of the system BLEND FL and e-materials, which they can access wherever they may be.A good example of the latter are our successful sportswomen and sportsmen, our students who are achieving top results in sport and are successful in their study as well as exams. In my opinion e-learning is a bright future which we all welcome as more and more students are not occupied only with their study but also with a growing number of other obligations.”

WHAT IS LOGISTICS?The vast majority of people still understand logistics in terms of transport, warehousing, loading and unloading activities. However, logistics is an extremely versatile discipline and as such an important part of our everyday lives as well as processes of value creation in various fields.

SUCCESSFUL LOGISTICS EMPHASIZES COMMERCIAL POTENTIALS THAT CAN ONLY BE ACHIE VED THROUGH A CONSISTENT USE OF WELL-KNOWN ME THODS AND PROCEDURES, INNOVATIVE KNOWLEDGE AND POWERFUL REALIZATION.

Since 2006, the Faculty of Logistics of the University of Maribor has been participating in the Erasmus exchange programme that facilitates international student and staff exchange, whereby the students have the opportunity to pursue one part of their training abroad at the host institution.

THE POSSIBILITY OF STUDYING ABROAD

IN SLOVENIA, BOTH PART-TIME AND FULL-TIME STUDENTS HAVE NUMEROUS EDUCATION AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES ABROAD. APART FROM THE ERASMUS EXCHANGE PROGRAMME, LEONARDO DA VINCI AND CEEPUS PROGRAMMES ARE ALSO LARGELY AVAILABLE.

Integration brings about optimal benefits for all participants: •Theemployerhastheopportunityto

CO-OPERATION WITH THE INDUSTRY

4

In many economic, commercial and service providing companies logistics occurs away from the limelight. To this end, it is extremely important to understand logistics and its relevant activities, even the less visible ones.
