We will examine vocabulary strategies for deeper comprehension of content-area vocabulary.

We will create tools for vocabulary instruction in the classroom.

We will discuss the application of vocabulary strategies in the classroom.

We will write models of vocabulary activities to use in the classroom.

Directions:1. In your content area groups, sort the list

of words and record them into their respective tiers.

Why is important to know the difference between Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 vocabulary?

Directions:1. Get into small groups2. Assign a group member to be the dealer3. Deal out two vocabulary cards to each group

member.4. The dealer will begin the game, by flipping

over one of the remaining cards in the deck. 5. Any member of the group can make a

connection by choosing one of his or her cards and laying it next to the card the dealer has turned over. Write the connection between the two cards on a post-it note and use the post-it to join the two cards together.

6. Continue in the same way until all of the group members vocabulary cards have been used up.

With your group members, travel to each table to observe how other groups made connections between their vocabulary cards. What are the similarities? What are the differences?
