Assignment 1 – Introduction

1. Quick opinion poll

Yes No

1 Export quality management is all about inspection and control

2 Government imposed regulations are more important than buyer requirements

3 Assurance programs and management systems increase costs and reduce the companies’ competitiveness and profitability

4 Environmental and social concerns in the international markets have nothing to do with quality

5 Social responsibility is like modern day philanthropy

6 In the international markets competitiveness is dominated by price

7 Support to SMEs in the area of compliance to international requirements is not the domain of business support organisations but the turf of certifying bodies

Assignment 2 – Technical Requirements

2.1 Identify which requirement/management system relates to which concern and which sector and whether it is a mandatory or voluntary requirement

Assignment 3 – Quick scan

You visit a SME for a discussion on an advisory service that your organisation can offer. The company has a good track record in the domestic market and is an aspiring exporter. You will have a short meeting with the operational manager and he will give you a tour through the factory and warehouse. You are interested to make a quick scan of the company to gauge the status of the company in terms of export readiness, with a focus on compliance with prevailing standards and management systems in international markets.

You prepare yourself at the office before you leave for the company and you make a brief checklist
