WHAT IS EXPO ?

• Expo is the biggest and oldest international organization. Every five years and for a period of six months, World Expos attract millions of visitors. The World Expo has never been held in the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia in the history of the event.

BIDDING

Once a city has lodged a bid with the BIE other cities had six months to respond, with the earliest allowed time to lodge a bid is 2011, and the latest is 2014. With an early 2011 bid lodgement to the BIE, Izmir Turkey and Ayutthaya Thailand initiated the six-month window for other cities to bid. This window closed on 2 November 2011, at which point 5 cities had lodged their bids with the BIE, with Dubai making a last minute entry. It has been discussed that the BIE will vote on the winning host city in November 2013. Four cities have bid for the slot for a world's fair in 2020: Dubai, UAE; Ekaterinburg, Russia; Izmir, Turkey; or Sao Paulo, Brazil. Expo 2020 will represent a first no matter which city wins. If Dubai or Izmir win, it will be the first Middle Eastern expo. Expo 2020 will be the first Russian world's fair if Ekaterinburg wins. A Sao Paulo victory would make it the first world's fair in South America and Latin America as well as the first in the Western Hemisphere in 34 years and the first in the Southern Hemisphere in 32 years.

THEME OF DUBAI• Dubai has a long history of facilitating connections and pioneering new

ideas and Dubai Expo 2020 would be no different, with a predicted 70 per cent of the expected 25 million visitors originating from outside the host nation, making it the most international event in the history of Expo.

• It would therefore provide a unique platform for the global community to come together and explore creative and pioneering solutions to the three subthemes which have been identified as key drivers of global development:

Sustainability - lasting sources of energy and water

Mobility - smart systems of logistics and transportation

Opportunity - new paths to economic development

The focus will be on exploring their interdependencies and identifying potential partnerships, ultimately resulting in a legacy of innovation.
