Calgary in Canada takes itsname from Calgary on Mull.This was a favourite summerhome of Colonel JamesMacleod, of the CanadianNorth West Mounted Police.In 1876, after he returnedfrom staying in CalgaryCastle (the imposing houseoverlooking the bay), hesuggested its name for FortCalgary which in turn gaveit’s name to the city ofCalgary, Alberta.

Did you know?

The Isle of Mull is an important over-wintering ground for birds that have theirbreeding outposts in the Arctic. Loch naKeal supports nationally significantnumbers of Slavonian Grebes during theWinter months, as well as a largeconcentration of Great Norther Divers.

ISLE OF ULVA is situated off the west coast of Mull and isreached by a small passenger ferry, no vehicles areallowed onto the island. Ulva is privately owned, formerlythe home of 600 people who made their living from thecollection and exportation of kelp.Today there are only a handful of residents who share theirisland with golden eagles, buzzards,otters, seals, rarebutterflies (Ulva is home to a colony of the Slender ScotchBurnet moth) and Red Deer. BEN MORE is the island’s Munro and the onlyMunro that requires a ferry crossing to access. Itmay be a lowly 3169 feet, but the walk starts at sealevel. Be aware that this volcanic mountain ismagnetic and so compasses are unreliable andmake an accurate reading impossible.

Kilvickeon BeachTurn off the Craignure to Fionnphort road just beforeBunessan, signposted to Scoor. Keep going along avery rough road at the end of which is parking space,just opposite Kilvickeon Old Parish Church andCemetery. Take the right turn on the track and it’sabout a 10 minute walk down to Kilvickeon beach. Herethere are lots of sandy coves to explore and the chanceto see seals and numerous sea birds.
