JACKSON ACADEMY 2018 SUMMER CAMPSLearning has never been so much fun!The camps at Jackson Academy have something for everyone, from rising sports stars to future artists and scientists. Summer is a great time to get on track academically with our workshops. Please check the camp catalog and fill your summer with our fun activities.

A few reminders: 1. Many camps have limited availability, so sign up quickly.2. Space in the camps cannot be held without payment and registration forms.3. Summer Care PolicySummer Care is Jackson Academy’s After School Care Program designed for Jackson Academy students who:

• Are enrolled at JA for the 2018-2019 school term.• Need extended care before and after the camp.• Are not enrolled in our regular Summer Program.• Summer Care will be $30 per day, plus summer

registration fee of $50 for PK-K and $100 for grades 1st-6th.

Boys Baseball CampCoach Jay Powell invites you to get ready for your baseball season with the Jackson Academy Raider Baseball team. Sharpen your skills with technical and strategic instruction. T-shirt and lunch included. Come spend the day with the Raiders! Grades: 2nd-6th. Fee: $50. Meet at Raider Park. March 30. 9:00–3:00.

Boys Basketball CampJA Raiders Coach Bill Ball and his staff offer an instructional camp designed to meet the needs of rising ballplayers of all abilities. Basketball fundamentals, good sportsmanship, a positive attitude, and enthusiasm will be emphasized in a wholesome camp atmosphere. T-shirt is included. Grades: 2nd-9th. Fee: $80. Meet in the Gym. June 18–21. 9:00–12:00.

Girls Basketball CampLady Raiders Coach Jan Sojourner and her assistants will lead participants in learning basketball fundamentals and achieving a new level of playing ability in an environment that is both challenging and fun. T-shirt is included. Grades: 2nd–9th. Fee: $80. Meet in the Gym. June 18–21. 1:00–5:00.

Cheerleading/Accent CampThis non-stop week of action includes a variety of activities designed to develop cheer and dance team

skills, and is led by our award-winning JA Accents and JA Varsity Cheerleaders. Wear shorts, top, and tennis shoes. Cheer leader uniform not required. T-shirt is included in the fee. Grades: Rising PK-6th. Fee: $80. Meet in the Gym. July 23–26. 9:00–12:00.

Fast Pitch Softball CampCoach Will Whitehead and assistants will work on individual and team softball techniques in a fast-paced camp for girls of all levels of playing ability. T-shirt is included. Grades: 3rd-8th. Fee: $80. Meet at the softball field at Raider Park. June 25–28. 9:00–12:00.

Football CampJA Raider Football staff will lead participants in basic football skills including passing, receiving, running, blocking, and tackling. Stay ’n’ Play Tennis CampBeginner and intermediate level tennis instruction will be available this summer for the PK-4th grade student! Instructor Emillia Viljoen will instruct campers in basic techniques, scoring, strategy, and tennis etiquette. Racquets will be provided for use during camp. Get ready for some fun on the courts! Class size is 6 to 24 students. Grades: PK-K. Fee: $80. Meet at the Preschool Gym. June 25–28. 8:30–9:30. Grades: 1st–4th. Fee: $80. Meet at the Preschool Gym. June 25–28. 9:30–10:30.

VolleyballVolleyball is sweeping Mississippi! Learn how to play this fun, non-contact, team-building sport from our Four-time State Championship team and coaches. Whether you’ve never touched a volleyball before or played in our spring league, you will leave our camp with fundamental volleyball skills and knowledge on how to improve your game. Coach Lawrence also spends a considerable amount of time during the camp covering the importance of teamwork and faith in athletics, as it is the mission of JA volleyball to cultivate virtuous young adults on and off the court. The JA Volleyball program is a teaching-style program, so you will not only learn how to play a sport but also how to strategize and be a teammate. Learn volleyball from the #1 team in the state and most importantly, come have fun! Grades: 3rd-7th. Fee: $80. Meet in the Gym. July 9–12. Mon–Wed: 8:00–12:00. Thurs: 8:00–10:00. Camp is open to both Girls and Boys.

Summertime Fun!This year Jackson Academy will be holding a Lifelong Activities camp. This camp will offer a wide variety of fun activities that students can play throughout their

lives. Some of these activities include corn hole, kan jam, bocce ball, ultimate Frisbee, low organized games, and many more. Get off the couch this summer, and come join the fun! Led by Coach Caleb Canterbury. Grades: 2nd-6th. Fee: $80. June 18–20. 9:00–11:30. This camp must have at least 8 campers. Meet at the green space by the entrance of Jackson Academy.

Soccer ShotsWe are happy to have Soccer Shots back again this summer. Derek Rooker’s Soccer Shots program is an engaging children’s soccer program with a focus on character development. Their caring team positively impacts children’s lives on and off the field through its best-in-class coaching, communication, and curriculum. This expert-approved curriculum is age-appropriate and aligns with childhood education standards. Grades: K3, PK, K. Fee: $125. Meet at the north practice field on Campus. June 25–29. 8:30–11:30. Kung Fu KidsThis returning camp is offered by the award-winning Academy of Kung Fu, and is martial arts training at its best! Boys and girls will enjoy exciting and fun basic Kung Fu training. Students will learn age specific Kung Fu techniques, self defense, and bully prevention. These lessons will help to develop focus, coordination, and confidence. This camp also incorporates character development lessons including respect, self-discipline, patience, and compassion. Kids love it because it’s fun! ART CampsWe welcome Joy Miller to Jackson Academy this summer! She has some exciting ART camps available to students K3-6th grade. Come join Ms. Miller and get creative!

Imagine Artists (K3 and K4)Littlest artists will paint, cut, tear, color, and paste to their hearts’ content through this week of camp! Combining paints, pastels, paper, and other exciting materials in fun, new ways, they will create works inspired by favorite children’s books as well as their own imaginations. Class will be taught by local art educator Joy Miller. Limit of 12 students. Grades: K3 and K4. Fee: $95 (includes all materials.) Meets in the JA Lower School Art Room. June 18–21. 9:00–10:00.

Art in My World (K5 and 1st Grade)Young artists will explore the natural world of plants, animals and beyond through art... expressing themselves through paint, pastel, clay, collage, and more! Personal observation, the work of master artists, and children’s literature will come together to inspire fun, creativity, and a greater awareness of our wonderful world. Class will be taught by local art educator Joy Miller. Limit of 12 students. Grades: K5 and 1st. Fee: $120 (includes all materials.) Meets in the JA Lower School Art Room. June 18–21. 10:00–11:30.

Of Sea, Sand, and Sailboats (2nd-4th Grade)...and fish, lighthouses, jellyfish and ocean waves! This camp is a fun-filled exploration of the sights, sounds, and creatures of the sea. Paint, clay, mixed media, collage, and printmaking are just a few of

the exciting media we’ll use to create amazing works of art that are sure to “blow you out of the water”! Class will be taught by local art educator Joy Miller. Limit of 15 students. Grades: 2nd-4th. Fee: $150 (includes all materials.) Meets in the JA Lower School Art Room. June 25–28. 10:00–12:00.

The Masters and Me (5th and 6th Grade)Famous masters throughout art history have interpreted each genre - portraiture, landscape, still life, etc. - through their own personal style. Students will be inspired by the works of Vincent van Gogh, Paul Klee, Henri Rousseau and others as they create their own masterpieces. Perfect for the student who wants to improve drawing and painting skills while still expressing her or his own artistic style. Class will be taught by local art educator Joy Miller. Limit of 15 students. Grades: 5th-6th. Fee: $150 (includes all materials.) Meets in the JA Lower School Art Room. June 25–28. 1:00–3:00.

Summer Dance CampAmerican Girl AdventureJoin us this summer as we go on an American Girl Adventure. Create matching tutus for you and your doll as you learn dances from the places, times and stories of the American Girls.

Bricks 4 Kidz CampLEGO Ninja Engineering Camp Bricks 4 Kidz LEGO Ninja Engineering Camp: LEGO Ninjago® fans will spin with excitement in this action-packed camp! Come build motorized models including spinners using Bricks 4 Kidz LEGO model kits. Imagination and creativity will abound as campers build cool models, battle with their mini-figures, customize battle arenas, tools, vehicles, and more...a S.T.E.A.M. camp experience! All campers take home a mini-figure or mini model and craft projects from each camp day! Limited number of campers! Grades: K-4th. Fee: $175. Meet in the JA Cafeteria. June 18–21. 9:00–12:00.

Essentials of EtiquetteThis camp, offered by Evelyn Harris, introduces and re-enforces etiquette skills for our 21st century young people. The camp consists of three days of fun and instruction. Day One offers instruction with knife and spoon use and how to politely eat finger foods. Introductions will also be practiced. Day Two will be a day of “how to’s”: use of the fork, invitations, thank you notes, and phone/home/ internet safety. Day Three will put all of what our campers have learned to a test when they are served a five-course meal! This camp is limited to 10 campers—register early to secure your place! Grades: 3rd-6th. Fee: $90, includes the meal at the end of camp. Meet in the Lobby of the Performing Arts Center. July 9–11. 10:30–12:00.

STEM CampsMinecraft Star Wars: The Last JediJoin our Lower School STEM instructor, Cliff Powers, on a creative adventure to recreate iconic Star Wars vignettes using MinecraftEdu. Each participant will be issued his/her own Macbook for use during the camp, so no other devices are required or needed. No prior Minecraft experience is necessary. Class meets in the lower school STEM lab, and is limited to 20 campers. Grades included in this camp: Rising 3rd-rising 6th. June 25–28. 9:00–11:30. (Students who also register and pay for the afternoon Minecraft: Coaster Kingdom camp may bring a sack lunch and stay for the day.) Cost: $125.

Sew Fun Studios: “SEW Sweet” Camp!Join Sew Fun Studios at Jackson Academy for a 4 day camp sewing all things SWEET!!! Sew a giant doughnut pillow, ice cream accessories, and more “Sweet” projects! Students will complete four amazing sewing projects! Grades: 2nd-6th. Fee: $225. Meet in the JA Cafeteria. July 23–July 26. 1:00–4:00. Tuition includes ALL fabric, notions, supplies AND the use of a sewing machine! *Please register by July 1.

Fast Finger ChallengeWant to learn how to type fast? In this camp students will be challenged to improve their word per minute (wpm) though a series of fun lessons, reviews, and practice sessions. Campers will learn all about home row keys, finger placement and how to increase their speed. Research shows learning to type can improve spelling, vocabulary and written composition skills. It also improves the time spent on homework. Each session will feature a STEM activity including LEGO® Robotics. Computers will be provided.

Camp is limited to 12 students. Grades 3rd , 4th , 5th. Fee: $130. Camp will meet in a classroom in the Learning Center. June 25–28, 1:00–3:00.

Computer TotsPaw Patrol® to the Rescue!No Job Too Big, No Pup Too Small! Help Ryder, Chase, Skye, and Marshall save the day with hands-on STEM activities! Build with Lego/Duplo characters, race cars and run through an obstacle course. Work on coding activities using iPads and Laptops. Camp is limited to 16 students. Grades: K3, PK, K5 and 1st. Disney® Imagineer Camp!Join Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy for a great camp full of Disney® STEM Activities. Create your own stop- motion animation movie featuring characters from Toy Story, Frozen and many more Disney® movies! Take a ride with Lighting McQueen and Tow Mater to learn about engineering. Join the Avengers and learn about robotics. Help Luke Skywalker fight the Empire by building your own light saber and LEGO® Star Wars spaceship! This camp will include many great iPad apps and software!

Interviewing and Presentation Skills for College PreparationSpend four days creating your competitive edge for scholarship interviews, job opportunities, and even preparing for Greek life and other social settings. Refine your answers to interview questions, Learn “pocket phrases” to ease nervousness. Observe video to instantly assess and adjust your skills, and review a list of personalized coaching tips. Work one-on-one with your instructor to polish your verbal and nonverbal knowhow. Open to the first 16 applicants. Presented by Certified Speaking Professional Mandi Stanley and Amanda Box. Grades: 11-12. Investment: $250. July 9–12. 9:00–12:00. Meet in Upper School classroom.

Summer Academic Workshops All workshops will meet in the Learning Center. All workshops are $200.

Writing Mechanics (rising 9th-12th) July 23–27. 9:00–11:00Students will learn the basics of writing essays, which includes format, content, punctuation, and grammatical structure. Students will be exposed to skills needed to formulate a cohesive essay. In addition, documentation of sources for term papers will be covered.

Literature/Grammar/Vocabulary (rising 5th-6th and rising 7th-8th)July 23–27. 9:00–11:00Learn the nuts and bolts of active reading skills to master reading comprehension using summer reading materials. Students will learn ways to study vocabulary effectively and store information in memory. Basic grammar skills will be reviewed, and students will receive a preview of skills needed to master the understanding of grammar and its applications in speaking and writing.

Math WorkshopJuly 23–27Students enrolled in the math workshops will review skills needed to begin the course and preview beginning concepts of the course so that they can experience success in the classroom.

Camp PolicyIn case of cancellation after registering for a camp, if Jackson Academy is notified in writing at least two week prior to the start of a camp, 100 per cent of the fee will be refunded. If Jackson Academy is notified at least one week prior to the start of a camp, 50 per cent will be refunded. Less that one week’s notice of cancellation will result in the forfeiture of all fees paid.

Unless the Marketing and Communications Office is notified in writing, a signature below indicates that permission is given for photographs and videos of camp participants to appear in media.
