RIVER CITY SPORTSPLEX

Sports tourism has become a major business for Chesterfield County, and the Greater Richmond region, in recent years. Given the region’s location and amenities, tourism in Greater Richmond generated over $2.4 billion in spending. Sports tourism, a key component of that spending, is anchored by the River City Sportsplex in Chesterfield. The state-of-the-art facility is the largest of its kind in the nation and boasts 12 synthetic athletic fields. It hosts major competitive youth tournaments with over 500,000 visitors per year coming from as far as Vermont and California.

Locating a mixed-use development next to this facility will add the critical infrastructure needed to support these large events. Hotels and restaurants are in great demand and even more so on tournament weekends. Players, coaches, and parents often spend long days with idle time between games and search for passive recreation to occupy their time. They will naturally gravitate to The LAKE as a result of its convenience and offerings, providing a perfect complement. As sports tourism continues to grow, it will be important for this facility to hold its place as the premier venue. The LAKE becomes the competitive advantage this Sportsplex needs to attract the best.

The LAKE has the ability to increase the length of stay for tournament visitors, host new tournaments and festivals, significantly increase the economic impact of regional sports tourism. Currently, Chesterfield generates over $80 million in spending from its sports tourism. However, it only captures $30 million in local spending. This leakage signifies that there is at least a $50 million opportunity to meet the need for additional hotel rooms, retail areas, and entertainment options. The LAKE is ideally positioned to leverage this opportunity and capture even more tourism spending.

SURF PARKRichmond Surf will deliver epic memories and viral experiences. A unique Adventure Surf Park that will be a world-class sports and recreation venue, Richmond Surf is a central feature at The LAKE. Utilizing cutting edge artificial wave technology, powered by American Wave Machines, this surf park will cater to surfers of all levels because it allows Richmond Surf to control its waves and tailor them to a person’s specific needs. A beginner can learn how to surf in a safer setting while a pro can experience waves as powerful as any produced by an ocean.

The Richmond Surf environment will encourage viral experiences shared in person and online. The future of the sport, this facility will open surfing to a much broader audience and as the first surf park to open on the East Coast, Richmond Surf is well positioned to gain significant interest and market share.

ENTERTAINMENTA dynamic and experience-driven development, The LAKE will attract millions of visitors annually. Over 200 events will be planned on an annual basis that will draw a wide variety of visitors locally, regionally, nationally and occasionally internationally. Events range from early morning yoga sessions in the park to international surf. While most events are catered to the weekend enthusiast the amenities are designed with the world class athletes in mind.

The consistent stream of events, combined with The LAKE’s destination status, will create an energetic environment that attracts more visitors who want to stay longer. The development is designed as an ecosystem to keep visitors connected and engaged, which means they’ll spend more time experiencing The LAKE’s many amenities, including retail, dining, and entertainment venues.
