2017ChevyCamaroRoadTestScottMillerOurnewslettereditorRichVelardo,hasfrequentlyaskedourmembershiptosubmitarticlesforpublicationintheExhaustNotes.AftertellingRich,onmorethanoneoccasion,thatImissedtheroadtestsheusedtodoonvariouscarsinthepast,Richexplainedthathejustdidn’thavethetimetodomonthlytests,andhesuggestedthatItrydoingaroadtestarticlemyself.Aftermuchprocrastinating,todayIfinallyvisitedLaveryBuick,Chevrolet,GMC,andCadillacinAlliance.ImetwithSalesConsultantJimWolfeandafterexplainingthereasonformyvisit,hesetmeupwithatestdriveina2017ChevyCamaroConvertible.IcouldhavedroveoneofseveralCamaro’swiththevariousV-8engine’s,butselectedthe2.0turbocharged4cylinder,sinceitwastheonlyoneonthelotwitha6-speedmanualtransmission.AlsoIfeltitwouldbeaclosercomparisontotheMiataswealllove&drive.TheunitIdrovewasaredRallySportLTconvertiblewithblacktop&interiorandsilverrallystripes.Ithadfeaturesincludingkeylessentry&start,powerconvertibletopw/hardtonneaucover,sportsuspension,8-waypowerdriver’sseat,AC,reardeckspoiler,outsidepowermirrors,autodimmingrearviewmirror,limitedslipdifferential,3.27axleratio,anti-lockbrakes,heatedseats&steeringwheel,dualexhausts,powersteering,20”brightsilver-paintedaluminumwheelswithrunflattires,conveniencepackage,Bosestereosystem,andnumeroussafetyfeaturessuchasblindzonealert,lanechangealert,rearparkingassist,8”informationcenterwithnavigation.Thecarlistedfor$46,110.Ouch!Itriedtodothetestdrivealone,butunfortunatelythatwasn’thappening.Consequently,itwasamildmannereddrivewithonlyacoupleofnoteworthycurves,ontwolaneroadsandonesectionof4lanehighwayaswell.ThecarhadsurprisinglygoodaccelerationthatIwasn’texpectingfroma4cylinder.Thetransmissionwasn’tascrispandhadlongerthrowsthanaMiata,butitwasstillquick&enjoyabletobrisklyrunupthroughthegears.Theexhaustisalsotunedtoanicesportypitchthatyouwouldn’texpectfroma4cylinder.Thecarcorneredreasonablywellontheonlypairofdecentcurvesweencounteredbutunfortunately,Iwasn’tableapproachthecarsfullcorneringcapabilities.Theinterioriswelllaidoutandconveysasportyfeelthatcomplimentsthecar.Visibilityisanissueinthiscar,especiallyoutthebackwindowwiththetopup.Theblindzonealertisaverynicefeature,astheblindspotisdefinitelymorepronouncedinthiscar,thanmostIhavedriven.Theexteriorstylingisverysharpandthelines,wheels,top(upordown)allmakeforanaggressivelookingpackage.Theridewasfirm,whichIprefer,thebrakeshadaverypositivefeel,butofcourseIwasn’tstandingonthemeither.Thetrunkwassurprisinglyroomy,muchbiggerthanIanticipated.Theenginecompartment,withthesmaller4cylinderturbo,actuallyhadroomtoaccessandworkunderthehood,forthosewithmechanicalskills.Mostpeople,whodesireaCamaro,wouldprobablyoptforoneofthelargerV-8engineswithatonmorehorsepower.However,forthemorebudgetconsciouslookingforasportyAmericancarfortwoadultsand1-2smallchildren,theCamaro4cylinderturboisagoodpossibility.Thecarwasratedat20mile/gallon.Iwouldn’thaveselectedthiscartotest,ifithadn’tbeentheonlymanualshiftCamaroonthelot.Thatbeingsaid,Iwaspleasantlysurprisedwithitsperformance.However,IknowifIwerebuyinganewCamaro,IwouldbelookingataV-8.Ifyouwanttoreadaboutfactslikebrakingdistances,¼times,0-60mphtimes,orroadholdingskidpadnumbers,youhavetogetacopyof“Car&Driver”andgetaprofessionalwriter/driver’stake.Ihadafreemorningandwaslookingtodosomethingfunanddifferentandhadagoodtime.Goout&drivesomethingjustforthefunofit,writeareviewandmaybeourEditorinChiefwillpublishyourdayoffun.
