youve lived in Eureka or any lengtho time youre sure to have seen therainy winters bring fooding to theEureka Municipal Gol Course at the

south end o town. Tese food waters area result o Martin Slough, which drainsthe south end o Eureka on its way towardthe Pacic Ocean, readily overtopping itsbanks and making the Gol Course anddownstream agricultural properties unavail-able or considerable periods o time.

In 2008 NRL was approached by the

Redwood Community Action AgencysNatural Resource Services Division (RCAA- NRS) and the Caliornia State CoastalConservancy (SCC) to become a partner inthe Martin Slough Enhancement Project,a two-phase sh passage improvement, wetland enhancement, and food reductionproject on the south side o Eureka. Tank you Mark foryour years of service!

n my line o business I am constantly remindedo how important agricultural producers are inthe viability o our local economy and in thelong-term protection o our natural resources and

open space lands. I have learned through our business,Humboldt Grassed Bee, how much our communityvalues locally produced, sustainably managedagricultural products, but I oten wonder how we cancreate broader understanding or the challenges ourlocal ranchers and armers ace in continuing to manageand steward the land or uture generations.

I got involved with the Land rust because I believein the importance o partnership and reaching acrossboundaries. I think we all have a vested interest in these productive landscapes and the Landrust provides an opportunity or each o us to support the stewards o these lands. Iveenjoyed my role as a Board member o the Land rust because it challenges me to considernew perspectives on land use and conservation.

Tis year the Land rust has decided to pursue accreditation through the Land rustAlliance. As a Land rust, we make a promise to steward conservation easement lands,

orever. Tis is a huge commitment, and we believe that by achieving and maintainingaccreditation status we will be meeting national standards or excellence, upholding thepublic trust and ensuring that our conservation eorts are permanent. Only 135 Landrusts in the nation have achieved this status, and we hope to be the rst in NorthernCaliornia to become accredited.

Id like to also extend our thanks to Mark Andre or his many years o service on ourBoard o Directors. As a member o the Governors Board o Forestry and as Director oEnvironmental Services or the City o Arcata, Mark is incredibly busy but has pledged tocontinue with NRL as an advisor which we greatly appreciate.

Finally, thanks to each o you that joined us at our AnnualCelebration on October 2nd. It was a huge success! One thing was clear,we have an incredible circle o partners that participate in our work andwe thank you or the role that you play as a member o our community.

NRL has been working with its proj-ect partners to nalize all activities leadingup to the purchase o the property. Fundinghas been secured with SCC and the land-

owners are working closely with NRL tocomplete the purchase. Once NRL gainstitle they will continue an agricultural leaseo the property and begin improvementson the existing agricultural inrastructure, which includes a large storage barn andwatering troughs. Tey will also become anactive participant in the habitat restorationplanned or the property.

NRL appreciates the many individualsand agencies that are working cooperativelyto make this and other resource enhance-ment projects a reality. We are dedicated toa complementary balance between produc-tive working landscapes and conservationo natural habitats. With the completion othe Martin Slough Enhancement Project,we will see a native system restored and in-creased productivity on existing agriculturalproperties in this scenic southern portion oHumboldt Bay.

ricultural property at the mouth o MartinSlough in order to acilitate the rst phaseo the restoration, which includes replace-ment o the deunct tide gate at the mouthwith a more sh-riendly and unctionaltide gate. Te Phase One project will alsoinvolve widening o the lower MartinSlough channel to increase fow capacity, construction o three acres o tidal wetland, establishment o riparian habitat along theslough, and retention o 28 acres o produc-tive coastal pasture or grazing.

Martin Slough hosts salmon and otheraquatic species that use the Gol Courses

irrigation ponds or rearing habitat. Tanksto diligent monitoring by the CaliorniaDepartment o Fish & Game, salmon habi-tat needs have been assessed and juvenilesh populations have been tracked in thissystem or years. In the second phase othe enhancement project, a number o theirrigation ponds on the Gol Course will beexpanded to improve the available salmonhabitat and the ability to contain food wa-ters, thereby increasing the number o dayson which the Gol Course is playable andagricultural elds are available or grazing.

    Bessette Ranc

Te Bessette Ranch, located in Requa

(south Del Norte County) is a stunningproperty that exemplies the types oagricultural conservation projects the Landrust hopes to support. With panoramicviews o the Lower Klamath River and theKlamath River mouth, lush green pasturesand mature mixed-conier orest, the Bes-sette Ranch is an exceptional property withunique conservation values and agriculturalattributes.

Surrounded by small 5-acre residentialparcels, owners om and Nancy Bessettehave worked hard to maintain their cattle

Te 900-acre Noble Ranch lies 1.5 mileso the south bank o the Van Duzen Rivernear Hydesville. Te property is a pastoralgem, surrounded by orestlands to the southand the Wild and Scenic Van Duzen Riverto the north. Landowners Jack and MaryNoble are working with NRL to explorea conservation easement to preserve theproductive pasturelands and wildlie habitaton the ranch or uture generations.

Located only our miles rom Fortuna, the ranch is prime real estate or ruralresidential development, the last thing the

landowners want to see. Te Nobles havespent decades constructing bank stabiliza-tion structures along the Van Duzen, bothor erosion control and sh habitat. Teyhave also planted thousands o willow, alderand cottonwood trees to improve riparianhabitat.

A conservation easement on 600 acres othe ranch will not only remove the threat osubdivision and loss o agricultural produc-tion, but will also complement the habitatwork that has been Jack and Marys management philosophy. We thank Jack and Maryor their dedication to land conservation

and look orward to working with them inthe coming year.

operation on the Ranch. Te property isunique as they are able to utilize the higherelevation pastures on the property or win-ter grazing and the verdant bottomlands in

summer and all . om and Nancy have alsoworked or years to restore the three creeksand marshes on the property, all o whichdrain into the Klamath River.

Te Bessettes have recently decided tobegin exploring the possibility o a con-servation easement on their property. Aneasement would prevent the uture subdi-vision o their ranch and ensure that thisimportant property will orever remain asone ranch into the uture. We are grateulor the opportunity to partner with omand Nancy on this incredible project.
