Know Your Yoga Style

If you’re new to yoga, then stick with a basic or beginner class at first. Once you are comfortable with basic yoga, you can begin

to explore some other styles. Classes may integrate a few

different forms or focus on one in particular. Some popular

forms:

• Ashtanga: “Power yoga”; fast-paced, physically-demanding and a great

cardio workout.

• Bikram: “Hot yoga”; practiced in a studio heated

up to 105 degrees.

• Iyengar: Props (straps, blankets, chairs, etc.) help achieve poses that focus on symmetry and alignment.

• Jivamukti: Combines poses and spiritual teachings with chanting, meditation,

readings, and music.

• Viniyoga: A gentle style that emphasizes breath and

movement coordination.

• Vinyasa: A series of flowing poses combined with rhythmic

breathing for an intense body-mind workout.

Grocery Shopping for your Health

Make a List Plan your family’s meals out for the week. You won’t be tempted

by quick-fix options like fast food and you can save money by purchasing ingredients that can

be used in multiple meals.

Don’t Go Hungry Going to the supermarket on an empty stomach can likely

lead to a cart filled with snacks and treats that look appetizing

to you now, but you regret buying later. Make sure your head, not stomach, is making the decisions when it comes to stocking up your refrigerator.

Grab a piece of fruit or a hand full of almonds before you

head out the door.

Shop The Perimeter In most grocery stores, the

aisles are filled with canned, frozen and dry goods that are

loaded with fat and unnecessary calories. The perimeter features

fresh produce, meat and fish, dairy and other, healthier

options.

BYOB: Bring Your Own Bags Store cloth bags in the back of your car and bring them along when you go food shopping. Some stores have repositories

for used plastic bags in the entrances as well. A healthy life

starts with a healthy Earth!

betty buzz: Sun SmartS

We see it in our lotions, make-up, and even in some clothing. But what exactly does the Sun Protection Factor (SPF ) indicate, and how can you determine the best level for you? This SPF checklist will keep you smart and sassy in the sun.❑ Look for SpF 15+: the spf

number measures the amount of time that you are protected from the sun’s rays, not the level of protection. so spf 15 protects you from burning for 15 times longer than you would without it. according to the american melanoma foundation, an spf of 2 will absorb about 50% of ultraviolet radiation, an spf of 15 absorbs about 93%, 30 absorbs 97% and 50 about 98%.

❑ use “Broad Spectrum” Sunscreen: this protects from both uva and uvb rays. some sunscreens only protect against the uvb or sunburn causing rays and not the uva or melanoma causing rays.

❑ choose Water resistant: if you’re a water baby, water-resistant sunblock maintains the spf level after 40 minutes of water immersion, while “very water-resistant” sunblock maintains the spf level after 80 minutes of water immersion. plan accordingly.

❑ Apply properly: apply sunscreen 15 - 20 minutes before sun exposure. reapply after water contact or sweating and about every 2 hours.

❑ don’t Skimp: the average person needs about 1 ounce (a shot glass) of sunscreen to cover their body, so apply liberally. Don’t reserve use for hot, sunny days only — you can be exposed to harmful rays in windy, cloudy and cold weather.

Moooved by Almonds

One cup of almond milk has about half the calories of regular cow’s milk, no

cholesterol or saturated fat, and 15% more calcium. Plus,

it is creamy and delicious.

Buy it at the supermarket or make your own by blending one

cup of raw, unsalted almonds (soaked in a bowl overnight)

with 3 cups of water until smooth. Add vanilla or sugar to

taste and you have a NUTritious substitute

for milk!

Just Add Nuts

Adding nuts to a favorite recipe can enhance the flavor and the

nutrition content.

• Puree roasted walnuts with a touch of walnut oil, lemon juice and Dijon to create the perfect

nutty dressing for salads. Sprinkle roasted nuts on finished salad for texture.

• Add ground nuts to a meringue recipe with a hollow

in the center. Cook slowly, cool and fill with whipped

cream and fruit!

With spring in bloom, allergies sneak up on us. Follow these tips to ease the symptoms and f ind some relief: ❑ Do a thorough spring cleaning - windows, book shelves and air conditioning vents collect dust and mold throughout the winter.

❑ avoid going outside at peak pollen times (10 am - 4 pm).

❑ take allergy medications at least 30 minutes prior to outdoor activity.

❑ shut windows in your house on days when pollen counts soar. avoid using windows or fans that may draw pollen inside.

❑ wash bedding weekly in hot water.

❑ Dry laundry indoors. sheets hanging on an outside line attract pollen.

❑ shower and wash your hair before bed - pollen can collect on your hair and skin.

❑ keep pets off of furniture and out of the bedroom. pollen can cling to the dog or cat after being outside.

❑ keep car windows closed during peak season. use air conditioning and point vents away from face.

❑ when mowing the lawn or gardening, wear a filter mask.

Are you and your business properly protected and insured? Talk with a trusted agent about your business’ insurance needs

including:

• General Liability Insurance - covers accident, injuries and

• Product Liability Insurance - consider if you manufacture, distribute, wholesale or retail

a product

• Professional Liability Insurance - protects against

• Commercial Property

• Home-Based Business Insurance - Don’t rely on

your homeowner’s insurance to cover your business. Most policies limit loss of business

Shaken or Stirred?

Shake cocktails when they include fruit juices, cream,

Stirring is a more gentle technique for mixing cocktails

Spring Fashion Trends

Colors: Bright and bold! Pair citrus colors like lime green,

zesty orange and pink grapefruit with crisp whites.

Bottoms: It’s all about the 70’s. Look for flared or wide legged denim, high waisted shorts and

full skirts.

Tops: Halter tops, Boxy, cropped styles, full silhouettes and classic

dolman sleeves are in, as are futuristic straps and cut-outs.

Dresses: Forget less is more - think long and flowing maxi-

dresses in pretty florals, vibrant colors or sheer fabrics.

Accessories: Complete the look with 70’s inspired chunky

bangles or a statement cuff, wide obi wrap belts and woven

sandals or handbags in fun, crayon colors.

New Twists For Old ‘Dos

Fishtail BraidSeparate hair into two sections.

Take a small piece from the outer edge of the right section and cross it over to the inner

edge of the left. Repeat on the other side and continue for the

length of your hair for a do that’s sure to turn heads!

Upscale Pony After securing the elastic, take a section of hair (small if you have long hair, but thicker if your hair is short), and wrap it around the

band until it is fully covered. Tuck it into the elastic for a

simple and elegant style.

Funky Bun Create an elaborate but oh so

easy effect by braiding yours first. Start with a ponytail; this will

help you get the right placement for your bun. Braid the length of the pony and then wrap it

around to form a bun.

Perfect Sunless Tan

Get a gorgeous, golden glow without exposing yourself to the

sun’s harmful rays.

Prep: Wax or shave 24 hours prior to using a sunless tanner. Exfoliate your skin generously, paying extra attention to rough

spots like elbows and knees. This will prevent your tan from looking splotchy and keep you

glowing for longer.

Cover: Use a barrier cream on hands and feet to prevent them from turning dark and

looking unnatural. Apply clear nail polish on your fingertips and toes to protect them from

discoloration.

Apply: Moisturize your skin for smooth application. Apply

tanner evenly working from the feet up. If using a spray, aim

for long strokes. If using with a lotion or cream, make sure to

apply in a circular motion to prevent streaking.

Dry: Do not shower for at least 8 hours after applying sunless tanner. Try applying at night before you go to bed. Wear

loose, dark clothing to protect your sheets. Avoid exercise,

since sweating will cause your tan to streak.

Moisturize: Moisturize your skin daily to maintain the longevity of

your tan and prevent discoloration.

Fix: Notice splotchy, uneven spots? Use natural ingredients to remove. The acid from a half of a lemon rubbed on trouble spots

will help. Also try massaging baking soda onto damp skin in

gentle circles to exfoliate.

“I am totally in love with the floral print shoe for spring! It’s like a beautiful garden for the feet.

It’s that one key item that can take a sleek monochromatic or solid color outfit to playful chic.

Don’t forget pattern on pattern is a great trend again this season to have fun with and what better

way to complete that thought then with floral print shoes.”

Wedding Registry Tips

Be An Early Bird: Register as soon as possible! Your guests might want to buy a gift right away, and if your registry isn’t

set up yet, their generosity could lead to excess or unwanted

items. Don’t feel pressured to only register for classic items like china and flatware; register for

the things you want!

Bring Him With You: Registering is supposed to be

fun! Include your hubby in this activity, and make sure he gets

to make some final decisions too (think electronics for him and

kitchen items for you).

Know The Return Policy: Be aware of your stores’ policies in case you change your mind or realize that you registered

for too many items.

Add Variety: Make sure that you hit all price points so your guests don’t feel pressured or

overwhelmed. Think about what your grandparents can afford versus what your old college roommate can afford. Also, make sure you update your

registry often so that late gift purchasers still have options.

Don’t Forget To Say Thanks: Thank-you notes for gifts

received before the wedding should be sent within two weeks

of their arrival. Notes for gifts received on or after the wedding

day should be sent within a month of your return from

the honeymoon. Make sure to mention the gift and

sender by name.

The Right Veil

When selecting a wedding veil, consider your height, and the

details and length of your dress. • If under 5’4”, an

elbow-length veil is ideal.• Those over 5’7” should

consider a veil that reaches to the fingertips.

• And for those brides who fall in between,

either style will work.

Make the Moment Happen

Have you envisioned your wedding day since you were a little girl? Tap into those

memories and write down the moments you have imagined. Compile a checklist to review with your wedding planner or

coordinator. For example:

• Ceremony: Do you want to take a moment to look at your loved ones gathered “behind” you? Is there a special poem,

scripture or passage you’d like?

• Pictures: Make a list of the pictures you want to have taken and give to your photographer.

• Dances: Along with Father/Daughter dance, list the others

you’d like to take a turn with like granddad or best girl friends.

• The Getaway: Are you running down an aisle dodging

bird seed or strolling under tossed rose petals?

As a bridesmaid you have tons of duties! One duty that you should always add to your list

is to pack some Hollywood Tape (or another strong double-sided tape that adheres to fabric) for wedding day apparel mishaps. That way if a hem comes loose,

straps are sliding off (shoe straps or spaghetti straps!) or a seam busts on a tight bridesmaid dress,

you can easily mend the problem! - LINDY SHEALY, Southeastern Wildlife Expo
