FROM THE COMMODORECOM. A.J. TELMOS, MD

Fellow DYC Members,This will be my final article as your Commodore. As I write, I can not help to think about what

a wonderful twelve months it has been and of all the wonderful things we, the membership, haveaccomplished this year.

Among the most important, increasing membership by more than 100, reducing debt by morethan $400,000, saving the Gold Cup Races, obtaining historic designation, and two projectsimportant to me - completion of the East End picnic area and placing the signage back on thehistoric DYC building. Both projects were funded by donations. Hopefully, we will complete themodifications to the Bitter End before I leave office.

The Frost Bite Rendezvous was a great success thanks to efforts of Fleet Captain Andy Ciupak, Lindsey Byers and First Lady Candis.

In closing, I would be remiss not to say thank you to my fellow Flag Officers, Past Commodores, Board of Directors, Fleet Officers, committee chairs, management, DYCoffice staff, DYC staff and most importantly you my fellow DYC members for all the kindnessesand assistance you have extended to First Lady Candis and myself during my Commodore year.

Remembering "WE ARE NOT HERE FOR A LONG TIME ONLY A GOOD TIME "Com. A. J. Telmos

FROM THE BOARDWALK TO THE BOARDROOMBY SECRETARY FRED CARR

This month the Board saw some of its earlier decisions come to fruition; the dredging approved in thespring has now been completed and what a good job of it too, the donation of replacement windows inthe Grill Restaurant has been completed allowing for unclouded views of our harbor once again.

In an effort to keep them there the Board listened to a presentation by a construction/rehabilitationcompany regarding repair/rehabilitation of our first floor support structure. Commodore Krietsch joinedus for this presentation, provided pertinent background information, and offered to attend follow up meet-ings. Additional presentations on various rehabilitation methodologies for the floor as well as the board-walk to veranda staircase will be heard in upcoming months and to be sure Commodore Krietsch isalways a welcome addition.

The funding source for this project requires an extension, currently it expires at year's end, and therefore the Board approved a motion to circulate a petition to bring a three year extension proposal toa vote during our upcoming annual meeting. Having a sound foundation is critical to our Club's future, the Board hopes you'll agree and vote in favor of this extension.

We also were treated to a presentation from the Strategic Planning Committee, a year in the making, which detailed our current sit-uation; provided a vision of the future and a detailed plan of how to get there. Their vision follows:

DYC Vision - 2016The Historic Detroit Yacht Club has maintained and further enhanced its position among the leading yacht clubs of the United

States and among the outstanding private clubs in Michigan. A growing, engaged and diverse membership of individuals and families, boaters and non-boaters, share a deep commitment to the Club, to their fellow members, and to the restoration of Belle Isle and the reinvention of Detroit. The Club's increased community involvement is reflected in the frequent recognition and positive reputation the Club enjoys.

Blending cherished traditions with contemporary needs, the DYC continues to set a high standard for friendship, fun, and family with a wide array of recreational activities for adults and children, social events, fine and casual dining and expanded member services. Membership levels again exceed 1000, enabled by effective recruitment policies and creative recruitment practices, improved retention levels, and continued high member satisfaction with the Club's services and value proposition. Boating members are delighted with the fully occupied and well-maintained DYC harbor. Membership levels in non-boating categories have increased significantly over the preceding six years. Club activities and utilization have continued to grow, even in the winter months. Members enjoy the services of a well trained staff with clearly stated performance standards.

Revenue increases from membership growth, catering, and other sources, coupled with strong cost and productivity management, provide a secure and sustainable financial position that supports Club operations and the Preservation Fund.

The DYC Foundation enjoys substantial participation and assists in supporting capital improvements though contributions and grants obtained. Members are well-informed about club business by transparency and timeliness in financial and operations reporting. Significant portions of the DYC clubhouse, grounds, and harbor have been restored and enhanced consistent with the long-range capital needs assess ments and funding plans supported by members and by the Foundation.

A vibrant institution, the Detroit Yacht Club is thriving and continues to be one of Detroit's recognized assets. Members' confidence in the long-term future of the DYC is strong and continues to grow.It was noted during SPC's presentation that our current Board has implemented some of the initiatives outlined in their plan, is very

interested in other initiatives and is grateful to have such a dedicated group of individuals to work with. Comments, questions and concerns, contact your Board of Directors via [email protected]

And that's the way it was from the Boardroom in October. 3

FLEET CAPTAINAndy Cuipak

Once again, we had fantastic weather for the 2011 Frostbite atMetro Beach. This year, every available well and wall space wasfilled at the park, most being from the DYC and our partnerJefferson Yacht Club. Combined, we had over 250 participantsfrom both Clubs as well as a healthy handful of the general publicwhich has been enjoying our Halloween decorations and light dis-plays for the last few years. We also had participation from thePower Squadron. For the first time, our rendezvous even generat-ed some press attention which never hurts.

Activities included food and entertainment for both Friday &Saturday, kid's games, a pet parade, boat decorating contests, andthe usual campfires, biking, and rollerblading. A special thanksgoes to Rob Koueiter for arranging 'Purdy Good' for Friday night'sentertainment. As usual the band was an overwhelming successand everyone enjoyed them. The Debbie Snethkamp 'shout-outs'for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. was just an added bonus onFriday.

This year Lindsey Byers completely revamped the kids' activitiesby creating the first ever pumpkin-broom obstacle course whichwas a hit with the kids from all ages. Candis Telmos and JulieLemanske added additional support with great prizes and materialsfor the course. Tracey Dryovage coordinated another successfulDoggie Parade which had some doggies in more impressive cos-tumes than the kids who went trick-or-treating boat to boat that day.

Next year, there will be some changes to the event which due tothe new layout of the wells at Metro Beach are necessary. Also, this event will be promoted as not just an event for boaters, but forour Active membership as well.

As a final reminder, the Harbor Staff has collected a great deal offlotsam from the fleet. There were severe winds mid to lateOctober so if you are missing coolers, fitted cushions, Isinglass orother items, please check in with the Harbor Office as they mayhave it.

WHY IS THERE A NEWSBOYS BAG UNDER THE CLUB’S TREE? BILL MCINTYRE

Under the Club's Christmas tree at the top of the main staircase, there is a newspaper delivery bag.The newspaper delivery bag is for the Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund of Detroit, which is a 97-year-old charity founded in 1914. The organization's sole purpose is to ensure that there is "No kiddie with-out a Christmas".

Packages are distributed to children through the Detroit Police Department and contain underwear, socks, jeans, books, mittens, a sweatshirt and a toy. For many Detroit children this is the only Christmasthey have.

Our members, employees, officers and commodores, especially Commodore Lucius Tripp, have graciously supported the workof the Goodfellows over the years. The Goodfellows' work is part of the community and the Club. If you wish to help, contact eitherJeff Kirk (313-882-8451) or Bill McIntyre (313-824-4711).

The answer to the question…The newspaper bag is there to remind us of the meaning of Christmas. There is joy in giving to oth-ers especially to a child.

The Bitter End Auction and Fundraiser went great and was lots of fun. In spite of the bad weather and limited attendance, weraised $4750 at the auction and gained additional donations of $750 after from people who could not attend. I would like to thankwhoever (?) donated the "Il Volo" tickets at the Fox. It was great; google them.

I installed some drapes in the Bitter End on the Harbor wall to indicate the door openings check it out! I created paper doorsfor illustration for the party. Sending out a special thanks to the DYC staff and all those who participated, great job!We are burning the $20,000 improvement cost at both ends because we are also receiving support and donations from members

who can provide direct construction help. Please send in additional donations so we can be ready and open for next year.Artil Leo (248) 766-4554 [email protected]

FROM THE CHEFKEN DIXON

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGERPAUL HUGHES

That was a busy October forus which is beneficial for thestaff, the membership and theDYC in general. Our goal is tostay as busy as possible withevents, community involvementand of course our Bar and Grill. Our new schedule is working inthe bar and grill, but we stillneed more attendance to keepup with the current goal ofbeing open 12 months per year. Please make it a point to comedown to the grill bar for a couple

drinks and dinner as you plan your schedules. We need you tomake it work. We will soon be releasing the operating hours forJanuary and February 2012 that will be very similar to our currentschedule. Again, without you, we cannot keep these areas openextensively, so get down here and enjoy your Club.

If you see some visitors during the winter months, they are mostlikely from another private club in the area that has closed for thewinter or will be closing soon. This is not a new system, but wenow manage this as a better tool for us to market our club to otherpotential members. We are already receiving letters from otherclubs requesting reciprocal arrangements since they are cuttingback their club hours significantly. One in particular just sent us anote that they will be closing from the mid-December thru the mid-March. We are not opening our doors to just anyone. If a memberof another Club wishes to dine with us, they must make a person-al phone call to our membership department or myself to arrangea reservation and seek approval for such. We then decide if this isa good opportunity for us to showcase the DYC to a potentialmember or not.

Let's have a great remaining Fall Season and get ready for theholidays. Nobody does it like the DYC.

2011 WINE TASTING DATESDecember 8

Stay tuned for more details about each event

Fall is here and Winter iscoming!

Many menus for Club events are being created as Iwrite this letter. Mr. Hughesand I are preparing for theAmerican Cancer Society’sCattle Baron’s Ball at The JoeLouis Arena on Saturday,October 29th. This event isone of the premier fund rais-ers in the metro-area. This isanother high end event thatwe the DYC/Detroit OverEasy will use as an opportuni-ty to showcase our culinary skills and commitment to the Cityof Detroit.

The last major event was for Ford as discussed by Mr.Hughes in last month’s newsletter. The event was success-ful and even though it was of the highest caliber our opera-tions were efficient. It is clear that we are establishing our-selves as a force in the off-site catering segment of Detroit.

The Club events that we are looking forward to include, TheVoyagers Wine Tasting, Thanksgiving Holiday and of coursethe many Holiday Parties. Please continue to come to theClub and enjoy dining in the Grill Restuarent. SundayBreakfast Ala' Carte is going strong with lovely selections ofClassic Breakfast Items. The Fried Chicken Buffet is a greatway to enjoy a relaxing Sunday afternoon and the Lionsgame.

Next month's letter will "spotlight" some of our key player'sand their contributions/role in our culinary operations. It ishard to believe that the year is almost over and the FoodService/Culinary Operations and myself wish to thank ourmembers and guests for the great year. We are growingevery year and will continue to strive for excellence in all thatwe do.

Thank you,

FLYING SCOTS KELLI MURPHY & CONNIE ALLEN

There are only a few short months until boats launch again inthe spring. In the mean time, there are lots of things you can doto keep in touch with sailing. Although booking a trip somewherewhere the weather is warm is always a tempting option, thereare some good off-season activities for sailors that can be doneright here at home. Here are a few ideas:

1. DRYA Sailing Seminars - the Detroit Regional Yacht-rac-ing Association ("the DRYA") sponsors a series of winter semi-nars on everything from boat maintenance to first aid to racingrules. These seminars usually take place on winter evenings atarea yacht clubs and attendance is open to everyone. Watch forannouncements from DRYA about the specific topics and sched-ule in the coming weeks. Other organizations, such as USPower Squadron, also offer boating education courses and mayeven be holding them right at DYC.

2. Practice. Practice. Practice. This is a bit more challeng-ing without the boat in the water, but there's plenty to practice onland. How's your knot-tying? Practice your bowline and learn anew knot or two to teach the rest of us. Do you know your pointsof sail and right of way rules? Test yourself when you see boatsdepicted on that nautical table cloth or wallpaper.

3. Read up! There are countless books and magazines ded-icated to sailing. While the national Flying Scot SailingAssociation's magazine Scots 'n Water is one everyone shouldread (and of course we also recommend you review your DYCFlying Scots Manual & Handbook), there are many others thatspecialize in your areas of interest. Racing, cruising, mainte-nance….

4. Sailing Simulator Games. While some of us are still hop-ing for a sailing game for the Wii, there are some decent sailingsimulators for computer available for download online. There areeven a few that are specific to sailing a Flying Scot! These mosthave a long way to go before they really simulate sailing, butthey are a great way to help understand application of racingrules and tactics.

5.The Internet. It seems that sailors love to share their expertise and opinions and the Internet is a perfect forum.Check out videos on YouTube, book reviews, websites, blogsand chats (you'll find out you know more than you think whenyou read the questions other people have the guts to ask…).DYC Flying Scots has a page on Facebook. Share your favoritewebsites, books and other activities with all of us by postingcomments on the DYC Flying Scots wall.14
