Events have a long history
• Well documented in the period before the fall of the Western Roman Empire (AD 475)
• Events have played key roles in society

A special event recognises an unique moment in time with ceremony and ritual to satisfy specific needs (Goldblatt 1990 in Berridge 2007)
'...an opportunity for leisure, social or cultural experience outside the normal range of choices or beyond everyday experience.'Getz 1991 in Berridge 2007
An event is:
A special event is a one-off happening designed to meet the specific needs at any given time. Local community events may be defined as an activity established to involve the local population in a shared experience to their mutual benefit.

Donald Getz and JJ Goldblatt in the 90s first identified an event as being 'special', 'one-off' 'unique' and beyond everyday experience
