A festival for time-based, performance, & new media art sited in unused spaces in downtown Mobile.
Temporal City Festival is an annual 3-day event presented by The Rumor Union and hosted by
downtown’s Arts Alive! festival. TCF intersects downtown geography with unconventional media.
Ten Artists are invited each year to execute temporary projects of either new media, performance, or
installation art in vacant buildings within a three block radius of Cathedral Square. Patrons are
invited on a journey to rediscover our city through an artist-designed map of the all work sited in
the festival, as well as the location of scheduled artist talks. Each work is site-specific. Tours are
scheduled throughout, as well as a host of opportunities for artists to enter into public conversation.

Program History:
Temporal City Festival began in 2011 with the spark of an idea. With no budget, materials, or sites a
group of artists came together to coordinate an experience of downtown like no other. Only a year
later, an entire arts organization has sprouted up around those eager creative thinkers. Temporal
City Festival 2011 was wildly successful despite limited time and resources. We pulled together 10
fantastic and widely varied spaces. We reached hundreds people with virtually no publicity. And we
received praise from our patronage beyond any expectation. Over and over again we were told
“Mobile needs this, keep going.” With the gracious support of the Arts Alive! festival we feel now
that we have something that both feeds our community through fresh perspectives and the
innovative use of forgotten space.

Who We AreRumor Union’s mission is to support art that is engaging, fosters dialogue, and
seeds growth in the greater community. We help artists accomplish ambitious
projects by resourcing venues and materials, building alliances, advocating for
projects, and troubleshooting project ideas. Our emphasis on grassroots organizing
seeks to include all races, genders, and socio-economic classes. We believe together
we are much more than the sum of our parts.
Event Goals
• To bring together different groups from the community. We do this by collaborating
with both Arts Alive! and Southsounds Music Festival on creating a cohesive and
inclusive community event.
• To create awareness of local businesses that support the arts.
• To create a unique event that will heighten community engagement and awareness
of local arts and culture.
• To host untraditional media, and accommodate work that is without a home in the
current art market structure downtown.
• To provide new sustainable and economically beneficial methods of creative practice
for artists.
• To activate, and inspire dialog on the uses and possibilities of space.
• To build Mobile into a reputable destination for evocative and trans-disciplinary art
practice.
• To interject new critical thought into the site-specifics and social ecology of
downtown.

Temporal City Festival
2013 Curatorial aim
SCHEDULED FOR:
April 12th-14th 2013
Other Worlds Within
Temporal City Festival is an exercise in re-imagining PLACE. Our urban landscape is a
body of secrets. Just beyond the teaming ruckus of street-life are the shells of unfulfilled
imagination. Daily we stroll past the membrane. Looming feats of architecture and effort
that shroud unrealized potential, the husks of possibility. Here, we call for artful revision.
Art in the South has the benefit of of an expansive and untamed margin. The South is
in flux. Here, we are free to experiment, re-invent ourselves, and lay down new paths
through history into a undetermined future. Mobile has had a year’s worth of
devastating storms and wild successes. With the onset of new economic opportunities, as
well as the effort to cope with marked loss, this is a moment for vision. The way in which
a child may map out his or her hopes and dreams for the future, we must take a charge
of unfettered dreaming for not-so distant prospect. We must lay claim to the potentials of
our town, and dare to re-imagine the value of our place.
The Rumor Union would like to invite ten artists to take temporary intervention on
unused buildings within the downtown landscape, in the form of performance,
installation and new media art work. This is to be a body of work that re-envisions local.
Projects that are site-specific and present an alternative idea of place are preferred. All
media and art forms will be considered, so long as they thematically address the aim of
this year’s festival.

Why Sponsor This Event? The Rumor Union operates on the basis of relationships. The great majority of our programming is transient for one reason: to get heads through the door of local establishments. This not only helps stimulate our local economy, but it builds connections that deepen and widen our sense of community. Our goal is to create a sense of abundance, not only for local contemporary art, but for our city.
Sponsors are culture-builders, they make meaningful investments in the community. Likewise, sponsorship to one of our events is not your average marketing opportunity. We take great care in where we hold our alligences. We treat each sponsor as a partnership that holds growth potential. From the seeds of those partnerships sproute new programming and ideas. Wherever we can, we aim to foster awareness of, and to celebrate what our city has to offer. By becoming an Event Sponsor you befit through:
• Association with an active community based
organization.
• Recognition as a supporter of innovative and
exciting new art forms.
• A presence at Art Alive and Southsounds Music
Festival.
• Visibility through all promotional materials, a
direct link on our website (a weekly destination
for our members) and at the event itself.
• The knowledge that you are supporting your
creative community, and helping to grow Mobile
into a destination of innovation.
