FRONT COVER

This is the front cover from my Digi-Pak. I included a variety of genre conventions that identify the genre upon looking at it. I took inspiration from a variety of sources, and a range of genres. I wanted to make the best and most aesthetically pleasing product, which is why I took inspirations from a variety of sources. The first being Mumford and sons ‘BABEL’. I took the idea of having the artist of a singer in the frame. I also took this idea from a range of Digi-Paks such as ‘Ryan Leslie’, ‘The Lumineers’ and ‘Seth Lakeman’. I took most of my inspiration from the Folk genre album covers as they include all the genre codes and conventions I wanted to portray within my main product and auxiliary texts. The relationship between this and my magazine advert is excellent; this is due to the similar background and the same relationship between the clouds and the foreground.

I had to think about ways in which I will and can link all my products together while using genre codes and conventions. I had to gain third party feedback to find out the best ways to do this whilst still gaining the audience’s attention and keeping them interested. The final aspect I had to consider was ways to relate the feelings and emotions of the song and evoke them through the aesthetic look of the designs. I chose to use a black and white imagery to accomplish this because it conjures the feelings of sadness, depression and solitude. To reinforce these feelings I chose to incorporate the genre convention of fields and wide open spaces.

INSPIRATIONThis is an album cover for the band Mumford and Sons. When designing my groups Digi-Pak I took inspiration from this design. I mainly took the convention of having the subject and focus point of the image being the artists. This would also help with the advertising of the artist/band. They also used the convection of a small enclosed area that is very busy and there is a lot within the picture. I decided to be more conventional which I why I chose to use a field.

Ryan Leslie is not a folk artist but his album cover was one that I felt quite inspired by. The use of only the artist s interesting as it boost the main point of the album, which is sales. The use of the plan background is also clever because it exemplifies the artist as he is the only subject in the epicure which grabs all your attention.

When thinking about my design I definitely took inspiration from this design,. The use of the artist in the shot is a clever use of the convention. The aspect of this design that I felt most inspired by is the overlay they have used. It exaggerates the traditional nature to their music and the core value from where the music comes from and its origins.

When considering my design and what most inspired me, I found that I have been mostly inspired by this design. The artist is Seth Lakeman. A well known artist in the folk scene but relatively unknown in the mainstream market. Looking at his design he has used the convention of including the artist and the use of a traditional instruments. This exaggerates the traditional value to his music.

This is another one of Seth Lakeman designs. He has used the artist convention but in this design he has chose to use the convention of an organic and natural place. A core value and rational convention that has become a stereotype for this genre. This is the design that inspired me to use a field and to take into consideration the rule of thirds.

BACK COVERThis is the back cover of my digi-pak, which re-enforces the message given within the narrative story. The ideology that folk is moving into the mainstream market and needs to adapt to these market codes and conventions. My partner and I chose to film our narrative story in a suburban area to exemplify this ideology and also to show the audience where the relationship between the two brothers has manifested and grown. It sends the message that folk can relate to anyone’s story and relate to their feelings and emotions. Evaluating how successfully this design works with my poster and the main product I would have to say that it is very successful as it incorporates the ideology of challenging the genre conventions within the narrative story, it evokes all the emotions and feelings within the song and it ties all the auxiliary texts together with the use of the black and white imagery.

INSIDE SLOTS

These are the three inside panels for my Digi-Pak. Throughout I wanted to continue using the black and white primary imagery. It exemplifies and carries the messages within the song and evokes all the appropriate feelings that are represented through the lyrics. My partner and I chose to make full use of the lyrics by incorporating a side which has them on. It worked excellently and stood out from the background to help with the sense of depth and the difference between the light and dark aspects of the picture that could be representing the happy vs. sad ideology. When considering how these panels work with my main product I had to think about the ways I could express the core values of folk and the traditional ideologies that have been carried through the years. I wanted to represents the side of folk that I know and I have grown up with. I wanted to create a personal link between myself and others who have been to festivals with this design. The ripping truly represents the free nature to folk and the fact you can make folk your own by ripping things out and including other aspects to folk.

LYRICS SIDE

Throughout the Digi-Pak I wanted to continue using the black and white primary imagery.

FINAL DIGI-PAK

This is the Digi-Pak I made finished and put together. When designing the Digi-Pak as a whole I knew I had to think about what the individual pictures would look like when placed side by side. This is an aspect I took into consideration and part of the reasoning behind the black and white imagery. After finishing the final draft of the Digi-Pak my partner and hosted a focus group so we could present our ideas and the relationship between our product and ancillary texts. The main point we took from the feedback was the bland nature of three of the slides.

MAGAZINE ADVERTFor my magazine cover I took most of my inspiration from my Digi-Pak. I thought the best and most suitable thing to do would be to continue with the black and white imagery to help enhance the ideologies and emotions represented and evoked through the lyrics and visuals. My other sources of inspiration are located at the bottom of the slide. For the magazine cover I wanted to fully conform to the folk genre conventions, to enhance the marketing aspect to the design. This would enable the audience to quickly identify the genre from the ancillary texts. To further re-enhance these ideologies I wanted to specifically use the stereotypical genre convention; a field. One aspect to a landscape picture that I personally find helps the depth within an image is the cloud formation. I chose to use a picture that has the bright clouds along with the dark, depressive foreground to represent the relationship between the brothers and the relationship between the ill brother and his illness.

MAGAZINESWhen thinking about what magazine my advert could appear, I immediately thought about this one. This particular magazine caters to Yorkshire, but it is one of a whole family of magazines that cater to the whole country.

This magazine is one that I feel is best suited to my product and magazine advert. It advertises more than just artists, it advertises album covers, upcoming artist. This magazine would be suitable because it caters to the wider audience . It is the leading magazine for country music and this is what our product is. Our product has all the genre conventions of a traditional folk music video. This is why I believe our product is best suited to this magazine.
