evaluation question 2

2
For my A2 Media Studies coursework we were required to produce a music video for a song of our choice along with two ancillary products of a digipak and a website for the band. The song is of the alternative rock genre and so the music video reflects this genre and the codes and conventions. However, these codes and conventions are not only illustrated in the video but in both of the other two ancillary products, with a theme that all three are based around. The first of the two ancillary products is the website. A website is a vital part of promoting a band and allowing to keep the audience up to date. The interaction is especially important therefore we have social media links. However, without a theme linking all three of the products together it is difficult for the audience to tell that it is the same band as the one from the video and the digipak. The theme that we have running through all three of the products is a sort of grainy, lo-fi theme as well as a greyscale colour theme which is mainly greys. This is illustrated on the website by both the background and the banner/header at the top of the page. The background a very light grey and has a textured look much like the header which is a darker shade of grey. The logo in the middle not only has the colours of our theme in it, but it is also one of the first looks at the font which we also used on the digipak. Here on the front cover of the digipak you can see the font is used once again but as a full band name rather than just a logo. One of the words is grey and the other white, keeping in line with the colour theme we have set along with tying in with the logo and also the back cover where we used the same font for the tracklisting. The pictures that we used for both the front and back covers have a grainy look which keeps the two in touch and neither of the covers looks out of place.

Finally, in the video the shots of the singer lip-syncing whilst walking down the street/sitting outside the house are quite grainy and look as if they have been shot on a VHS all the while not being very colourful or bright to give that dull effect that the greyscale colours we used also give.

The theme that these dull colours and grainy/textured effects portray is that of a grimey, suburban culture which could often be associated with the alternative rock genre, with a lot of these bands having quite middle-class lives and starting out with very poor instruments. The combination of these features ties all of the products together and creates a very clear image of the band that will stick in the mind of the viewer and allow them to easily identify anything the band will do in the future.
