EVALUATION QUESTION 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Page 2: Evaluation question 2

Media representation of youths The media representation of youths in London is troublesome. Youths are

all stereotypical represented to be criminals. Very youth wearing a hoodies is seen to be a gang member, takes drugs, lovers of violence and has underage sex. Youths are seen to be school drop outs and benefit claimers. Youths that live on estates are seen to have no hope of achievement.

The right off the youths and because of the representation of youths, teenagers are seen as unapproachable, when people see a youth with a hoody they cross the road. Youth are not given a chance to prove what they can do so they just continue to involve them selves in crime to make money because the got no other hope. Even though the media depicts the youths are drop outs, there has been a increase in applications for colleges and universities.

Our representation of youths our representation of youths contradicts the stereotypical representation, in our

opening youths are seen like the way the media views them as criminals but we show through Terry and Josephine that there are youths that are trying to escape from the lives that they live but they just need a chance where the public don’t give them. Terry is a drug dealer that sells drugs to support his mother who is a single parent with no job. Also to save to go to university because the government would not give him a loan because they think that he is not worthy. He realizes that if he wants to make something of his life he must do it by abiding by the law so he tries to escape but Myrin his boss, thinks that he owns Terry. Ending in Myrin killing Terry. Which depicts that there are some youths that can’t help in the crime they find themselves doing because they need to survive but there are those youth who conform to the stereotypical representation for example Myrin in the opening.

Josephine is represented to be a stereotypical youth, she is a drug taker, 17 year old single mother, in debt to Myrin who id the father of the child. She wants to escape to have a better life for her and her child. This shows that she is different to other young mothers she is willing to keep the baby and change her lifestyle.

Our represents conforms but also contradicts the media representation.
