    A b s t r a c tEng ineering desig n is characterized by a high level of imp recis ion, vag ue parameters, and i l l-defined relat ionships. Indesign, impre cis ion reduct ion m ust occur to arr ive at a f inal prod uct specification. Few d esign system s exis t for adequatelyrepresenting design im precis ion, and form ally reduc ing i t to precise values . F uzz y set theory has considerab le potent ial foraddress ing the imprec is ion in des ign. H ow ever, i t lacks a form al meth odo logy for sys tem deve lopm ent and operation. Onerepercuss ion of this is that imprecis ion reduct ion is , a t present , implemented in a relat ively ad-hoc manner. The main

    cont r ibut ion of th i s paper i s to in t roduce a methodology ca l l ed p r e c i s i o n c o n v e r g e n c e for mak ing the transit ion fromimprecise goals and requirements to the precise specif icat ions need ed to manu facture the product . A hierarchy o f fuzz yconstraint netwo rks is presented along w ith a m etho dolo gy for creat ing t ransit ional l inks betw een different levels of thehierarchy. T he solut ion me thod olog y is i llus trated with an examp le within w hich an imprecis ion reduct ion of 98% isachiev ed in only three s tages o f the design process .
