Andorra has an alpine climate and continental climate. Its high elevation means there is, on
average, more snow in winter, lower humidity, and it is slightly cooler in summer. There
are, on average, 300 days per year of sunshine.
Important facts
It was formed in 1278. It has two co-princes – the Bishop of Urgell and the
President of France.
Andorra is a prosperous country because of its tourism. It has 10.2 million
visitors every year. It is not a member of the European Union, but the euro
is the de facto currency.
Important rivers
The Valira river is the biggest river in Andorra. It flows through the capital,
Andorra la Vella, and exits the country in the south near the Spain-Andorra
road border crossing.
The Valira is a tributary to the Segre river, which in turn is a tributary to the
Ebro river. It flows into the Segre in La Seu d'Urgell.
Its main tributaries are the Valira d'Orient, the Valira del Nord and the Madriu.
The Valira river system is 35 km long.
Important mountainsDue to its location in the eastern
Pyrenees mountain range, Andorra
consists predominantly of rugged
mountains, the highest being the
Coma Pedrosa at 2,942 metres
(9,652 ft), and the average elevation
of Andorra is 1,996 metres
Important cities
Its capital is Andorra la Vella. It is the
highest capital city in Europe because it is
1,023 metres above sea level.
Its people
There are 85,000 people living in
Andorra in 2012. The official language
is Catalan. Many people can speak
Spanish, Portuguese or French.
