Write using evidence (focus on facts, versus opinions).

Increase academic vocabulary.(e.g. analyze, analogy, articulate)

The Florida Standards

What About the New Assessments?

• LAFS and MAFS will be assessed using the Florida

Standards Assessments (FSA)

• The Spring 2021 administration of the Fifth

grade assessments will include:

– English Language Arts (ELA)

– ELA Writing

– Mathematics

– Science

All Testing is Paper-Based Testing6

Test Item Specifications

• The ELA Reading and Mathematics assessments contain 56–66

items.

• Test session lengths are as follows:

– ELA Reading: Two 80-minute sessions

– Mathematics: Two 80-minute sessions

• The ELA Writing component of the ELA assessment consists of

one text-based constructed-response item (students read a

variety of texts and respond to a prompt).

▪ Students take the ELA Writing on paper and have three lined

pages on which to write their responses.

▪ The ELA Writing test is administered in one 120-minute

session.

Information on ELA Writing

Test

• Opinion or Informative

• Students will have between 2-4 articles to read about the assigned

topic.

– Examples include:

• Write an informative essay in which you explain how

technology has helped explorers overcome challenges

related to deep-sea exploration.

• Write an opinion essay: Should your city adopt a bike sharing

program

– All articles will give a different piece of information about the

topic.

– Students must read the articles, then write their own essay using

evidence from the articles and elaborating.

Scoring for FSA Writing

• There will be three scores per essay which will be

totaled at the end for a final score.

• Purpose, Focus, and Organization (0-4 point rubric)

• Evidence and Elaboration (0-4 point rubric)

• Conventions of Standard English (0-2 point rubric)

• The maximum score is 10 points.

the tests are not intended to guide instruction.

to familiarize themselves with the different features

and response instructions for each item type.
