15th JanuaryThe World’s conflicts

A world of conflict awaits Barack Obamawhat’s in store for Brack obama when he becomes the new president of the usa? can the world’s most powerful man – with his foreign minister Hillary clinton – clean up the problems in some of the world’s most infected conflicts, such as the middle east, iraq and afghanistan? today, there are around 30 armed conflicts going on around the world. He will be reminded of them throughout the year.

North Korea and IranThe struggle against atomic weapons can be won through tough diplomacy. All atomic weapon-grade material should be removed within four years. The USA wants Iran and North Korea to be hit by sanc-tions immediately if they break the non-proliferation treaty. Iran is being offered member-ship of the World Trade Organiza-tion (WTO) and economic help if they renounce their atomic weapons program and stop their support for terrorism.

GuantánamoDuring the war on terror, the USA shipped arrested suspects to Guantánamo prison in Cuba.

Obama has prom-ised to close the prison within the next two years.

The prison was opened shortly after the terror attack on New York in 2001.

It contains around 250 prisoners today. At its height, there were around 700.

Where the prisoners will go is unclear. More than 100 prisoners are held without evidence – but is it too risky to free them?

IraqThe US-led alliance will hand over more regions to Iraqi control. Iraqi Prime minister Nuri al-Maliki wants troops withdrawn before the election to demonstrate the country’s independence. The USA has 140,000 soldiers in Iraq. The goal is for all American soldiers to leave the country by summer 2010.

AfghanistanViolence has escalated during 2008. The Taliban have returned and strengthened their position with the help of al-Qaida. Today, NATO has 50,700 troops in Af-ghanistan, including 20,000 from the USA. Obama wants to commit more resources and increase the number of troops to combat al-Qaida and the Taliban. The goal is to destroy their stake in Afghanistan.

Israel-PalestineIsrael refuses to deal with the Palestinian organizations as long as terror attacks continue. The conflict escalates around the turn of the new year when a cease-fire is broken and Palestinians attack Israel with rockets; Israel hits back with a powerful attack against Gaza. Obama will work for a two-state solution, with both an Israeli and a Palestinian state.

PakistanCurrently in conflict with India over Kashmir.Has worked with the USA in seizing terrorists during the past year.Obama wants to increase aid to Pakistan, and also wants the country to take more responsibil-ity for security at the border with Afghanistan.

5th AprilAstronomy Year

100 hours with a telescope in Galileo’s footstepsAn on-going project during International Astronomy year is the ”100 hours of observation” being conducted between 2–5 April. The idea is for people around the Earth to have the possibility of learning more about the universe through the use of a telescope – just like Galileo did four hundred years ago, when he pointed his telescope at the sky.

The SunOur nearest star. A fireball made up mostly of gasses – hydrogen and helium. 000° at its surface, there is no other star compares with this in our galaxy.

1. MercuryDiameter: 4,878km. Second smallest.Average daytime temperature: 70°, sinking to -180° at night.Thin atmosphere of oxygen, hydrogen and natrium atoms blended with helium and calcium atoms. Visited in 1974 by the Mariner 10 space-probe.Moons: 0Orbit time: approxi-mately 88 days.

2. VenusDiameter: 12,104kmAverage daytime temperature: smaller than Earth, but warmer – up to 500° on the surface.Heavy atmosphere of gas, mostly carbon dioxide. Thought to have streams of hot lava on its surface. Moons: 0Orbit time: approxi-mately 225 days.

3. Earth (Tellus)Diameter: 12,75km.The only planet in the universe on which life has been discovered. The fifth largest planet in the Milky Way. Moons: 1Orbit time: 5 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 4 seconds.

4. MarsDiameter: ,787km. Intensively studied. Thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide (95%), nitrogen, argon and small quantities of acid and water vapour. Big temperature differences. Around the equator it can be +10°, but can sink to -90° at night. The poles are colder: -125° or lower.Moons: 2Orbit time: 87 days.

5. JupiterDiameter: 14,800km.The biggest planet. One of the skies brightest objects. Large red streaks. -4 times the size of Earth. Under the clouds of carbon, nitrogen, sulphur, hydrogen and phosphor, there is possible traces of water storage.Moons: (newly discovered).Orbit time: 12 years.

6. SaturnDiameter: 120,0km.A gas giant sur-rounded hydrogen and helium, with rings of ice and comet fragments. Probably made of a stone and iron core similar in size to the Earth, covered by ice across several thousand kilometers. Rotates quickly, which may account for the flat-tening at the poles. Orbit time: 29 years.Moons: 0 (newly discovered).

7. UranusDiameter: 51,120km.A gas giant surrounded by faint rings. Cold and hazy atmosphere without clouds, but with much methane gas – this gives the planet a greenish appearance. Outside temperature around -210°C.Orbit time: 84 years.Moons: 27.

8. NeptuneDiameter: 49,400km.A gas giant com-posed of about 84% hydrogen. Atmosphere comprises methane, ammonia and hydrogen.A thick cloud cover. Dust clouds appear to be controlled by the sun’s magnetic activity. Orbit time: 15 years.Moons: 1.

Galileo Galilei(154-142)

Italian scientist who constructed the first telescope in 109-10, after a Dutchman built the binocular. Perhaps the first to observe and repro-duce astronomic objects. Galileo was the first to see and map countless other stars. He saw Venus’ different phases; sun spots; mountains and craters on the moon; Saturn’s rings; four moons which circled Jupiter, and much more. Telescope – from the Greek telesko´pos: far-sighted.

9. PlutoDiameter: 2,290km.Counted as a dwarf planet. Lost its planet status in 200. Temperature: -240°Orbit time: 248 years.Moons: .

Swirl: made of thick cloud com-posed of rising water particles.

The eye of the hurricane: Clear sky. Cold, sinking air in the middle prevents cloud and rain.

Path of the storm: powerful winds and driving rain.

Waiting for the wind to startThe hurricane season has started in the Atlantic. Over the next six months, the Mexican Gulf, the Caribbean and the US south coast will be hit by the world’s worst weather. American researchers believe that this year’s weather will be worse than normal.

1st JuneAtlantic hurricane season begins

Growth of a tropical storm

Hurricane scaleThe strength is measured with the Saffir-Simpson five-grade scale.

Wind speed m/sec and type of devastation

Trees and mobile homes damaged. Water levels one metre higher than normal.

Transport dam-aged, roof tiles blown off, roads blocked.

Streets of houses damaged, trees blown over, waves at 2.5- metres, evacuation neces-sary near beach areas.

Buildings badly damaged, roofing blown off, road-ways damaged, emergency evacu-ation.

Trees and buildings destroyed. Mass evacuation.

1 Thunder-storms

gather. The warm sea water heats the air, which rises quickly. Cumulo nimbus clouds form, and violent thunder-storms follow.

2 Tropical low pressure is

created. Thunder-storms and cloud follow the trade winds westwards. The earth’s rota-tion means that storms rotate around the low pressure’s centre. Wind speeds are up to 24m/s.

3 Reaching storm

strength. The wind reaches storm strength of 25m/s (tropical storms = 25-2m/s). The storm is now given its name.

4 The hurri-cane grows.

The storm grows to a tropical hurricane. Wind speeds exceed 2.m/s and the diameter of the storm is around 200-00km, but can be as large as 1000km.

5 Direction determined

by high pressure. The surround-ing high pres-sure steers the hurricanes path. But the hurricane usually starts moving west, then turns later toward the northwest or north.

6 Weakens over land.

Once the hurricane starts rolling in over land, it loses the warming factor of the sea. Rain starts to cool the ground underneath until the hurricane quickly weakens.

How an eclipse works

The moon passes between the sun and the Earth, and both are in a straight line.

The sun is around 400 times larger than the moon, but 400 times further away, which means that they appear nearly the same size when viewed from Earth.

The start of Ramadanramadan is the name of the period of muslim fasting. a fifth of the world’s population have a month’s abstinence from food, drink, smoking and sexual activity between the rising and the setting of the sun.

The Muslim Calendar

The Islamic year has twelve months, each beginning with a new moon. A new moon begins at different times in different places.

The moon calendar is 11-12 days shorter that the sun calendar, so the timing of Ramadan moves over the years in a -month cycle.

chapters (suror), and the believer should try to read enough each day

during Ramadan so that all chapters are finished at the end of the period.

If anything should happen to cause the breaking of the day’s fast, it should

be continued for a further day after Ramadan.

7th DecemberClimate Change Conference COP-15

Our future is decided in Copenhagenperhaps the most important meeting of the year – in any category – happens in november in copenhagen. there, the un’s climate change conference meets to shape a new global agreement: cop-15. the thought is to update the kyoto protocol and reduce the production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

cop15.dk

The greenhouse effectWhen the sun’s rays meet the earth, the energy in the sunlight is trans-formed into heat. 1

Carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases act like glass in a greenhouse. 2

The sun’s rays 3 pass through but the heat 4 is trapped.

The earth’s temperature rises, affecting the climate system.

The temperature increasesOver the past 100 years the earth’s average tempera-ture has risen by 0.74°

Climate models show that the temperature in 2100 will have risen by 1.1 – .4°, depending on the amount of carbon dioxide. That could mean that sea levels rise by a meter.

2005 On the 1th Feb the Kyoto protocol gained momentum when Russia became a signatory. 128 countries have signed, and indus-trialized nations agree to work to reduce their output by 5% between 1990 and 2012.

2007 At the 1th conference (COP-1) all countries agree to reduce output of green-house gases.
