DESTINATION IMAGINATIONThe state Destination Imagination tournament was held on Saturday, April 12, at Jackson Middle School in Champlin. Three teams represented Esko at the tournament. The Creative Critters tied for 13th in the Scientific Challenge, “Going to Extremes”, elementary level. The Doodleskeez placed 12th in the Structure Challenge, “The Tension Builds”, elementary level. The Allies placed first in the Scientific Challenge, “Going to Extremes”, secondary level. They also received a Renaissance Award for outstanding design, engineering or performance. The judges said, “Overall, this team had an extraordinary performance that excelled in all areas of the technical design, engineering and entertaining performance.” They specifically noted the team’s “particle collider”, the use of a rewired fan to bear weight and perform at speed to depict the black hole, and the integration of their research within the script.Congratulations to our state qualifiers!

On Saturday, March 29, six Esko students participated in the regional competition of History Day. Eli Rud competed at the Junior Level with an exhibit about Medics in World War 2. His exhibit included authentic World War 2 items and his great-grandfather’s letters. Samia Anderson and Annabelle Adkins competed at the Junior Level with a website on the Salem Witch Trials; and Haley Sonneman, Abigail Rud and Hannah Stark competed at the Senior Level with an exhibit on The Little Rock 9. Two projects were selected to move on to the state competition at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to be held on Saturday, May 3--The Salem Witch Trials website and The Little Rock 9 exhibit.Congratulations to all of our History Day participants!

Esko Fine Arts

On March 17th and 18th students in the Esko Senior High Band and Jazz Ensemble One competed in the Minnesota State High School League Music Contest on the University Minnesota Duluth campus. Each year the many groups, both large and small prepare for weeks learning first the notes, rhythms, articulations, and then concentrate on the finer points of music, ul-timately presenting an accurate and moving musical experience to their best ability. The AdjudicatorsThe large group adjudicators were Fred Nyline, retired band director from Luther College, Dr. Mark Whitlock, Band Director from UMD, and Dr. Pam Bustos, Band Director from UWS.Dr. Greg Moore from UWS was the Jazz adjudicator.Bill Lavato, retired band director was the Solo/Ensemble Brass adjudicator and Jeff Campbell, Music Dept. Chair from UMD was the Instrumental Solo/Ensemble Woodwind adjudicator. The ProcessAll were evaluated on a 40 point scale which critiqued the musical perfor-mance in pitch, tone quality, rhythm, articulation, interpretation and musi-cianship, percussion precision, balance and blend, intonation, music selec-tion, and even appearance and posture. Performances that received 35-40 points result in a SUPERIOR rating, 28-34 were deemed EXCELLENT, 22-27 were GOOD, and lower were FAIR.Solo and small ensembles that earned a SUPERIOR rating also received a medal. The Musical CompositionsThe Senior High Band performed two selections this year. Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre and The Hounds Of Spring by Alfred Reed.Lux Aurumque began its life as an a cappella choral work in 2000 and then adapted for band in 2005. The tempo is very slow and dynamically diverse which puts a premium on tone quality, intonation, balance and blend. The Hounds of SpringWhen the hounds of spring are on winter’s traces,The mother of months in meadow or plainFills the shadows and windy placesWith lisp of leaves and ripple of rainAnd soft as lips that laugh and hideThe laughing leaves of the trees divide,And screen from seeing and leave in sightThe god pursuing, the maiden hid.“When the hounds of spring are on winter’s traces, is the first line from a poem, a recreation in modern English verse by Algernon Charles Swinburne, of an ancient Greek tragedy, appeared in print in 1865. The poem forms the basis for the present purely musical setting, in traditional three-part overture form, attempts to capture the twin elements of the poem, exuberant youthful gaiety and the sweetness of tender love, in an appropriate musical texture.

The first performance of The Hound of Spring took place in Windsor, Ontario on May 8th, 1980, under the direction of the composer.Jazz Ensemble One performed Zifflemeyer Blues (shuffle) with a solo from Seth Bergstedt, Back In Time (ballad) which was a feature for Emily Os-borne, Blue Rondo a la Turk (latin) with a solos from Jace Brademan and Gabe Graves, and a trumpet section feature Brass Machine (rock) with a solo from Will Omberg. The programming was perhaps the most challenging ever encountered for any Esko trumpet section. The ResultsThe following groups earned a Superior rating:Senior Band 39,36,36 (Category 1)Jazz Ensemble One 35Trumpet Quartet 39(Will Omberg, Josh Liupakka, Jacob Laundergan, Emily Osborne)Sax Quintet 38(Jace Brademan, David Pyrlik, Isaiah Salinas, Zach Liupakka, Matt Sunde)Brass Quartet 38(Will Omberg, Jacob Laundergan, Emily Osborne, Seth Bergstedt)Trombone Solo 38(Seth Bergstedt)Horn Duet 37(Josephine Stracek, Madaline Pass)Flute Solo 37(Hannah Erickson)Trumpet Duet 36(Austin Imig, Makayla Huffman-Swanson)Percussion Ensemble 36(Gabe Graves, Nick Barrett, Jonah Bockbrader, Matthew Lyden, Sarah Severson,Teddy Webster)Trumpet Quartet 36(Austin Imig, Makayla Huffman-Swanson, Courtney Mainville, Mitchell Borchardt)Woodwind Quartet 35(Eileen Obrien, Kathleen Rydberg, Emily Barrett, Katlyn Weber)Flute Quartet 35(Chloe Fredrickson, Emily Saphner, Kelsey Rye, Taylor Erola) Clarinet Duet 34(Whitney Carlson, Katie Boettcher)Flute Trio 34(Kelsey Rye, Chloe Fredrickson, Emily Saphner)Congratulations to all of the students for meeting the challenges of perform-ing these musical selections to a high standard. The students would like to thank Jennifer Osborne for volunteering her time to coach several of these groups. Because of her expertise and guidance, many groups were able to elevate their performance to a higher level.

Participants from EHS Jazz One; Saxophone: Jace Brademan, Adam Graves, Zach Liupakka, Zach Kangas, Matt SundeTrumpet: Emily Osborne, Will Om-berg, Jacob Laundergan, Josh Li-upakka, Trombone: Seth Bergstedt, Dylan Carlson, Eric Meysembourg, Connor Rudd, Rhythm Section: Josie Stracek, Jonah Bockbrader, David Pyrlik, Gabe Graves Participants from EHS Jazz Two; Saxophone: Riggs Olson, Zach Greniger, Braden Senarighi, Ben Newman, Cole White, Chase Bergst-edtTrumpet: Makayla Huffman- Swan-son, Courtney Mainville, Austin Imig, Jacob Pyrlik, Quinton Watsick, Hunter SenarighiTrombone: Taylor Jablonski, Wil Osborne, Eric Newman, Johnathan Robertson, Luca GiancolaRhythm Section: Colter Hendrick-son, David Pyrlik, Declan Sinnott-James, Teddy Webster The festival is non-com-petitive in nature, offering positive, learning based experiences for young jazz ensembles and many outstand-ing performances. Each group re-ceived 40 minutes of individualized time for the ensemble. Each group performed for about twenty minutes and then critiqued by two clinicians

for another twenty minutes. During the day, students had an opportunity to listen to other jazz bands from Austin, Marquette, Washburn, Redwing, Maple Lake, Duluth Denfeld, and UMD Jazz 2. They also attended a jazz clinic on their instrument where they picked up some tips on style, improvising solos, tone production, and support-ing others within the jazz ensemble. To wrap up the day, there was a 5pm concert given by UMD Jazz 1, guest artists Bob Sheppard, Jean Lois Al-mosnino, and the Head of the Lakes All Stars. This year Esko Jazz Ensem-ble One performed Zifflemeyer Blues with a solo from Seth Bergstedt, Back In Time which was a feature for Emily Osborne, Blue Rondo a la Turk with a solos from Jace Brade-man and Gabe Graves, and a trumpet section feature Brass Machine with a solo from Will Omberg. Esko Jazz Ensemble Two performed Second Line with solos from Makayla Huffman- Swanson, Chase Bergstedt, Taylor Jablonski, Pretty Eyes which was a feature for Austin Imig, San Juan by Night with solos from Colter Hendrickson, Will Osborne, Zach Greniger, and Hit the Bricks with solos from Riggs Olson and Austin Imig. Individual achievement awards were presented to students who offered outstanding perfor-mances. Award winners from EHS Jazz One were Seth Bergstedt, Emily Osborne, Will Omberg, David Pyr-lik, and the entire Trumpet section.

Award winners from EHS Jazz Two were Riggs Olson, Austin Imig, and Colter Hendrickson. Although the Jazz Fest is not competitive, the clinicians are al-lowed to select one outstanding band from the festival if they feel that such an honor is earned. The band award-ed the 2014 “outstanding band” dis-tinction was our own Esko Jazz One.Along with the award, a hand-held Yamaha digital recorder will be pre-sented to Mr. Mowers from UMD Jazz music department for use in re-hearsals. The UMD Jazz Fest remains as the most important event for the Esko Jazz band program. It prepares them for the upcoming MSHSL State Band contest held later in the month, provides a high-stakes moments in a quality performing space, facilitates students to listen to groups from out-side our area, and encourages the students to keep striving to become better musicians of jazz.Student comments… David said that it’s always fun to hear other bands and have other bands listen to us. Eric and Taylor report that they learned valuable ideas from the cli-nicians both during the performance and in the clinic session. Riggs said that he likes it because he can solo without the pressure from judges. Will, Josh, and Jacob L. said that it’s nice to experience the results from their hard work during those early morning hours. Emily said that the Head of the Lakes Jazz Fest is one of her favorite events of the year be-cause it’s fun to hear all of the great things the “big shot” musicians have to say about our little schools’ jazz

band. She goes on to say, and the other trumpet players from jazz one agree that she loves the camaraderie with the other kids in their jazz band family. The following has been tak-en from a follow up letter from Ryan Frane: Dear Jazz Festival Participants,Congratulations on your many fine performances at this year’s Head of the Lakes Jazz Festival at UMD!! I am happy to report that the festi-val was a success from our vantage point and hope that it was a learn-ing and enjoyable experience for you and your students. I tried to hear as many of the performances as I could during the day, and was very im-pressed with the caliber of jazz from the daytime performances, as well as with the professionalism of the stu-dents who were guests on our cam-pus. Thank You!Sincerely,Ryan Frane, Director of Jazz StudiesUniversity of Minnesota Duluth

Musical – Will there be a musical this year? There was a motion made by Eric Brademan to provide funds for a pizza din-ner for the Choir trip. This was seconded by Jim Erickson. A vote was held and all approved.

There was discussion held on the .52 music position. President Jim Erickson talked with the administration and the following is provided as information:

Following are the notes from my discussions with the administration. From our discussion at the December School Board meeting and a follow up phone call with Aaron I understand the following: -Ryan was acknowledged publicly and privately for his ser-vice at Esko Schools by the School Board and Administration. -Ryan’s departure was very late in the summer and it would have been difficult to find a suitable replacement once the school year was start-ed as any experienced teachers were committed at other schools. -It is common to review staffing levels when changes occur and the ad-ministration considers scheduling, finances and needs of each department among other things before making a recommendation to replace a teacher. -The administration is very committed to fine arts and the reputation of excellence in the Arts at Esko Schools. It is important to grow and sup-port the staff, facility and programs to meet the needs of the students. -The 5 year planning process that was completed this year had input from the School Board, Administration, Staff and the Community. Each of the areas that were brought forward from the study was weighted by the board and a list was published of what the priorities would be going for-ward. Most of these have been completed or are on track. Items that the community brought forth regarding improvements to the performance facil-ity and other items did not make it onto the priority list at that time but will be considered in this next round of planning just started in January 2014. -Any questions or concerns regarding the operation of the school should be brought to the attention of the Principal(s) and/or Superintendent. School Board meetings provide an open comment period to voice concerns or ask questions but the board typically doesn’t respond during the meeting. This input is welcomed by the board members but typically most regular business is itemized and part of the agenda developed by the administration.

Current Officers: President: Jim Erickson Vice President: Lisa Stracek Treasurer: Lisa Robinson Secretary: Eric BrademanNext meeting will be March 3rd, 2014 at 6:30 pm in the band room.Future Meetings:2014 March 3 April 7 May 5 June 2

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:01 p.m. Respectfully submitted,Eric BrademanSecretary, Esko Music Boosters

Esko’s Heart is Extraordinary! Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart are an annual event that our Elementary Physical Education Specialist, Mrs. Bridget Vesel-Johnson (Mrs. Vesel) and Mrs. Cynthia Johnson (CJ), put on every Spring. These two events, held at the same time, help raise money to support the American Heart Association’s research and education initiatives that save lives in our community. Congenital heart defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects. Many children are alive today because of treatments not available even 10 years ago. Funded research and advancements have changed and saved their lives and Esko has made an amazing difference! On April 10th we hosted our annual event with over 260 participants signed up! This is a new record! What is even more remarkable is that last year we raised $13,128 dollars. This year the “unofficial” total is $3,000 higher than last year! Did you know, for every $50 raised, a life can be saved? In the past 5 years our school has come together to raise over $39,500 dollars; that’s 790 lives saved! Thank You Esko! YOU ARE TRULY A HEART HERO! Special Thank You goes out to all of you that volunteered and donated your time to help put on this special event, Jessica Uecker, Brooke Pfister, Tammy Thornton, Samantha Battaglia, Kristi Shultz, Sarah Tillman, Jody Greniger, AnnaMarie Jokinen, Nadine Miller, and Kerrick Johnson. Without you, this event would not have run as smooth!

Most vegetables we will be planting are late harvest and will be used this fall in the school cafeteria, but if you are at the garden and something is ripe, pick it and enjoy it! How do I know what to do? If you arrive at the garden and no one is there, head on over to the shed and read the information available. There will be instructions on who to call to get the code for the lock and you can use any of the supplies/equipment available. A hose will be hooked up and instructions on what to water/weed. There will also be a garden log in the shed for you to tell others when you were there and what work you did in the garden. Bring your family and learn about the garden, help water,

pull a few weeds, and have some fun!
