NEXT WORK PARTY IS May 19, 2018Provisional members - This is a good chance to get in your required volunteer hours. The next work party will be August 19, 2018
The Presidents’ Corner
Annual Association BBQ The association BBQ will take place on May 20. Adult meal is $25.00, children 12 years of age and under is $10.00. Advance tickets can be purchased through BOD members or the Association clerk. Tickets can be purchased at the event. There will be fun events and plenty of good old fashioned camaraderie so please try to make a point of coming up and enjoying the day with your fellow members.ElectionsWell, it’s that time of the year again. First nominations for your Board of Directors started at the general membership meeting in April. At the general membership meeting in May, {May 10, 2018}, the floor will be open once again for nominations, then immediately followed by the membership vote. Please remember to bring your membership card with you or you will not be given a ballot. Committee chairperson Jack Bryson has informed the Board of Directors that along with the President, Vice President and Secretary positions, there will be three (3) Director vacancies for this year’s election. If you know any responsible members that you think might be interested in serving the association on the BOD, please, “DON’T HESITATE - TO NOMINATE”.Scholarship AwardDeadline for the EF&GA Scholarship Awards is August 15, 2018. Applications and required paperwork must be received by this date. Postmarks will no longer be accepted as proof of timely mailing.Children at the RangeWhen you bring a child to the range, some rules prevail. Remember, you are responsible for the supervision of that child while they are on the association property. If you are not the legal parent or guardian of the child then you must have a permission slip signed by the legal parent or guardian allowing you to be responsible for that child. Blank permission slips can be obtained from our website. KudosThank you’s once again to the kitchen staff. You make the general membership meetings that much more.
PLAY SAFE, STAY SAFE
Neil Pisk
I Looking BackThree years ago this month, I was given the honor of editing this newsletter after the passing of Ken Notter. Before he passed, he gave me advice and direction on how to keep this periodical as a positive and useful method to disseminate information to the membership as
well as others in the community that share our common interests. I miss his sense
of humor and his matter-of-fact way of pointing out ridiculous situations. Ken was a great man and left me some really big boots to fill and I hope that I have mostly lived up to the high standards that he had set so many years ago.
The main changes that I made have been bringing in more people to write more content from different voices. As I have stated before, I welcome content submissions from members as long as it is well-written and remains pertinent to EF&GA interests. Patrick Russ either writes the Junior Corner or gets a Junior to do it for him (good delegation skills). Garth Warner has stepped up and contributes his Black Powder News every month. Other members at large have written articles like the one written by Eric Jamois about polymer projectiles last year. The only content that I exclude is political rants. As part of our 501c4 charter, EF&GA remains politically neutral.
I really need to point out that I also get a lot of help from Patrick Russ for not only the Junior Corner, but also the transcription of any lists of names. For example, when there is a Work Party and I want to recognize and include the list of names, Patrick goes through the green-sheets and deciphers the messy handwriting and gets it into a document that I can then copy and paste into the newsletter. His efforts relieve me from the tedious and time-consuming tasks that need to get done so that we can print the newsletter on time.
I Make Time to Attend a General MeetingBring a friend to the next General Meeting and one or both of you could win a few bucks. At the last General Meeting, Ernie Herbert won the $25 door

Weed Mitigation and Fire Safety By Mark BaldwinRetired Fire Prevention Technician
With summer coming on and the grasses and weeds turning brown and drying out, we must all work on and make sure that our range and our homes are safe and protected from the things that can cause fires that can become wildfires. Some of the things that we can do to make sure the areas around us are safe are to keep the weeds down to about 4 inches from the ground 100 feet from structures. We don’t want to scrape all the weeds or grasses away and leave just bare earth, to protect from erosion in case of rain. Within the first 50 feet of the structure you want to see low, green, well-watered plants in the second 50 feet from the structure you can have a little bit taller plants but you want to keep them thinned out to be only about 50% of the coverage. We also want to make sure to clear any dead leaves or branches off our roofs and out of the eaves. If you have tall trees (20 feet or higher) the lower limbs should be trimmed so that they are no closer than 6 feet from the ground. Also, tree branches should not be any closer than 10 feet from a chimney. When clearing weeds or mowing grass, do it early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat of the day. Also when you’re clearing and you’re using a metal blade on the weed whip or lawnmower make sure that you have a fire extinguisher, or water and a shovel close by in case the blade strikes a rock causing a spark which can cause a fire.Other things to think about is to make sure that you do not have firewood stacked within 30 feet of your structure. All dead branches, leaves, pine needles and palm fronds should be removed from the trees as well. Dead palm fronds not only go up like a Roman candle when they catch fire but they also attract rodents. Also tree canopies should not be touching each other. There should be at least 5 feet between the canopies. This helps prevent a thing that’s called crowning. That is where a fire gets up into one tree and spreads to the next to the next to the next because there is not any gap between the trees.Additionally, we are currently working on our own fire mitigation at the range. We can use all
the help that we can get to knock down some of the weeds that are growing along the ranges. We are looking for volunteers for the monthly junior working party. On May 6th, we will have our next event. This is a great chance to make up some volunteer hours or just come help clean up the range.

R a n g e M a s t e R s o u n d o f f
When you arrive at the range, you are required to get out of your vehicle and sign the green-sheet FIRST in order to ensure that the range is HOT before removing
your cased firearm(s) from your vehicle. Next it is time to remove them from the bag/case.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t like it when someone is messing with a firearm behind my back! I have to prevent myself from spinning around and doing a cowboy quick draw…
I would like to explain what we consider the proper way to unload and load your firearm(s). I am not referring to the round in the chamber (this time), but the bag/case you brought it in.
Your firearm should be unloaded from your bag/case on the firing line bench/table (pointed down range), not the bench/table behind the firing line. Rifles should be unloaded in this fashion and then placed in the rack if that is its eventual destination. You then reverse the process to load your firearm back into its bag/case.
If you are not following these procedures you are most probably “sweeping” other shooters on the range, which is a major safety violation. Just saying…
Unload/load your firearm into/out of the bag/case on the firing line with the firearm pointed down range.
I also want to remind you that everyone is an RSO regardless of whether you have a Red Hat. If you see another member doing something unsafe, please politely remind them. If that does not work, please send me an email with the details. The Board convenes a special inquisition for those who violate our safety rules.
The annual picnic is this month, and I would like to remind everyone that Alcoholic Beverages are not permitted until after the shooting events are completed. Leave them in your car!
If we find any alcoholic beverages before the “all clear,” you will be asked to leave (I will eat your BBQ) and we will confiscate the contraband for later consumption.
There will be several shooting events, so please bring eye and ear protection to participate. You may also want to count fingers and toes before going over to the primitive events; they have sharp objects.
I made a statement in last month’s article regarding confiscating magazines inside rifles/pistols when the range is Cold. Let me clarify: I would never touch your firearm—especially while the range is Cold and there are people down range. I will be the guy standing at your bench waiting for you to come back so we can have a discussion.
I am still looking for some “Volunteer” Rangemasters who would like to assist in managing and keeping the range safe (it is the Wild West sometimes). I provide training, a nifty red hat/shirt, and an opportunity to help people shoot safely.

I NRA Metallic Cartridge Reloading Class (6/2/2018)Although ammo has plentifully come back to the market there are California restrictions (Prop. 63) that have been generated to hinder such purchases both in-store and on-line. The opportunity to learn reloading techniques that will allow you to produce timely, consistent, accurate ammunition while receiving NRA certified reloading instruction is available on June 2nd, 2018.The First Part is strictly academic in structure and conducted at the EF&GA meeting hall. This session (8:00 AM 6/2/2018) will last until approximately 12 noon. The Second Part is a “Hands On” reloading bench experience. This session generates the practical, detailed experience necessary while you successfully complete a number of your personal reloads. Scheduling the second session will be at a mutually agreed to time and date. This scheduling will be completed at the 1st session. The cost is two tiered: EF&GA members = $100; non-members = $110. For those individuals beginning and are without any reloading supplies (empty cases, powder, primers, etc.) a $10 surcharge will be applied. Prior registration and a $20 deposit is required to secure a place in this class. Registration is necessary and limited. For more information, contact Elvio Marchi at [email protected] or 760-734-3942

How to place a classified ad
in the newsletter Please help to keep the classified section easy to read and well organized. There is no cost as long as you are an EF&GA member in good standing. Classified ads run for ONE newsletter (one month). If you want to repeat an ad for another month (with price adjustments, etc…) simply re-submit the ad request via e-mail.
Please submit requests for classified ads via email to [email protected] and be sure to double-check for spelling and grammar errors.
It may sound obvious but requests for classifieds are frequently received with not enough information to be useful to a reader. There are 5 main components of a classified ad:
Category – Most classifieds fall into one of 3 catego-ries, ‘For Sale’, ‘Wanted’, or ‘Lost & Found’.
Subject/Title – This will appear in bold in the advertise-ment. This should be short (2 or 3 words) and concise.
Description – This is the body of the advertisement and can be a few sentences but not more than a paragraph. Abbreviations appear cryptic and are not recommend-ed unless they are well known acronyms.
Price – A specific dollar amount as well as qualifiers give the reader important information. For example, “$600 or Best Offer, Buyer pays DROS, Will consider trades”
Contact Info – This should be a name AND a phone number (including area code) and/or an e-mail address.

JUNIOR CORNER
Guns & Roses Work PartyBy Russ Patrick
On April 17, 2018, the Junior Marksmanship program held a working party that was focused on the amazing roses of Mom’s Creek. The junior program wanted to give back to the range for doing so much for them. What better way than to help beautify the range and the rose garden. The kids also wanted to help Ray and Pam as they are huge supporters of the Junior Program. The kids assisted Ray and Pam with feeding, weeding and spreading mulch around the roses. Not only did the kids get a chance to help, they also got the opportunity to learn about the roses and how best to care for them. As you can see, it was a very successful day. We would also like to thank Ray Bucholz and Pamela Tucker for putting together an amazing raffle table for the kids and teaching the kids about the roses.
