From the ES ES ES AdministrationProcess versus ProductThis week saw a group of our Grade 4 students share the fruitof their labors since August, when they first joined the 20152016 Children’s Musical Theater (CMT) group. Fifty studenshowcased a musical performance to the entire ElementarSchool on Thursday morning and then again with their parenton Thursday evening. As we think back to the process they wenthrough, from initially going through team building exercises, tstarting to develop some discrete musical and theatrical skills
leading into the New Year, when they actually started to thinabout writing a script of their own, we can see a trajectory oskill development. This moved into a more concrete productiostage, when acting, music and technical teams were formed ana very real ‘product’ of a forty-five minute stage play emergedStudent ideas and creativity were honored and this fina‘product’ had taken on many twists and turns, based on studenideas, since its early inception in January.
The alternative could have been to take a script of the shelf iAugust and spend the next nine months practicing anpracticing it, until the final product was ready to be showcasedNo doubt, our students would have still enjoyed th
camaraderie of coming together and enjoyed putting on thshow, however the skills developed, and the seeds planted fofuture learning would have looked very different.
How Can I Best Support My Child at Home inMathematics? This is a question we will be turning our attention to nexWednesday morning when we hold our final parent coffee fothe year. For many of us, reading is an embedded part of oufamily rituals at night as we model reading habits and havinfun with literature with our children. Why do we not do thsame with Mathematics? Recent research is indicating that somstudents develop fixed mindsets about their ability i
Mathematics. Equally, many view it as a subject in isolation ansomething that is ‘done’, in terms of a set of finite procedurerather than seeing it in a broader context as a part of our daillives. Please join us for this interactive session, where you wileave with some resources and strategies to incorporatMathematics learning into your daily conversations with youchildren.

Campus Card Corner
What’s New?
The Elementary School Canteen joins the
implementation of the full debit system beginning
SY16-17.
How does it work?
• The students’ campus cards (ID with a smart chip)
will remain in the homeroom. If there are special
classes (Art, Music and P.E.) before the lunch
break, the campus cards should be worn beforethe student proceeds to the special class as they
will not return to their homeroom.
• During lunch, students can purchase food at the
ES Canteen using their campus cards. Sodexo and
The Yogi Chef (international vegetarian cuisine)
will provide a well-balanced and kid-friendly
menu in the ES Canteen.
• Upon leaving the canteen, ES students will leave
their campus cards in the designated box assigned
to their homeroom and the campus cards will be
distributed back to the homeroom so they will be
available the following day.
• If a student misplaces/losses the campus card,
the concessionaire can access the student’s name
without the card so the student will have access
to food that day. If the card is lost, it must be
replaced immediately through the Security Office.
How to use the campus card?
Parents must load the family or individual account
(online, at the kiosk or at the Cashier’s Office) to ensure
that the student can use the card to purchase food in
the ES Canteen.
With the debit system, parents are able to:
• Set spend limit per day and/or per student.
• Restrict card usage on (a) particular day/s.
• View card activity to view what student purchased
on a particular date and time.
• Set low balance notification to make sure the
family or individual account has enough fund
balance. In case the account does not have enough
balance, ES students will be allowed up to P500
credit only, parents must load cards immediately.
For more information about the campus card system,
please click here:http://www.ismanila.org/page.cfm?p=948
Reminder: ES Students are not permitted to purchase
food items in the MS/HS Canteen during their lunch
break.
!
Starting SY2016-2017 ISM will implement a full debisystem in the MS/HS Canteen. The debit systemprovides customers with a cashless payment systemonce the customer's ID has been loaded with funds.
Parents and Students are encouraged to startusing the debit system if they aren't already doin
so.
Whether you are on a family or individual account, you can still set a spend limit per day at theCafeteria, Copy & Print, and Bearcat Den
Here’s how:
Log in to your account→ Go to E-Account→ Set Spend Limit→ Click Save when done.

Tetanus (Lockjaw) VaccinationTetanus (Lockjaw) is caused by the Clostridium Bacterium. Their spores are resistant permanent forms which are
found worldwide in garden soil or dust. The disease causes painful tightening of the muscles, usually all over the body. It can lead to "locking" of the jaw so
the victim cannot open his mouth or swallow. Tetanus leads to death in 50% or more of all cases.
Everyone needs protection from tetanus. If you have not had a booster shot in 10 years or more, you should receive it
now.
It is clinic routine to prescribe a booster shot within 24 hours after the slightest scratch acquired outdoors, if a personis not protected. This can be quite disruptive if travelling. Smaller hospitals outside Metro Manila may not carry the
vaccine.
While all our young students are protected - since the vaccination is a school requirement - students aged 16 years
and older, teachers and parents may need a booster shot.
College freshmen are generally required to have an updated immunization record.
Pertussis (Whooping Cough) VaccinationEveryone, no matter what age needs one shot of pertussis (whooping cough) in their life. Pertussis in adults can cause
prolonged, severe coughing fits. The best way to prevent whooping cough is to get vaccinated.
Tdap, a pertussis booster shot, is recommended for unvaccinated adults instead of Td (tetanus and diphtheria)booster. You should get the Tdap vaccine (a combination of tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine) as soon as
possible if you have never received it, no matter when you got your last Td booster shot.
Pregnant women should get a dose of Tdap during every pregnancy, to protect the newborn from pertussis. Infants
are most at risk for severe, life-threatening complications from pertussis.
What are the risks from Tdap vaccine?
With any medicine, including vaccines, there is a chance of side effects. These are usually mild and go away on theirown. Serious reactions are also possible but are rare.

TIME TO SIGN UP FOR THE 2016 QUADRIVALENT FLU VACCINATION!
Vaccination Day –Wednesday, May 25
Last day to sign up/pay – Wednesday, May 18
Price Php - 750.00
Vaccine: Quadrivalant FLUQUADRI (Sanofi-Pasteur)
To be protected against influenza you should get vaccinated annually, since the circulating strains of thevirus change, hence the composition of the vaccine is always kept up to date. The Quadrivalent influenzavaccines provide broader protection as they include both co-circulating B lineages. Vaccination isespecially important for people at high risk for serious flu complications (persons 60 and above, with achronical health condition and women getting pregnant during the flu peak season) and their closecontacts. In tropical countries the flu is present year–round with peaks during the months of July untilSeptember.
Everyone with a valid ISM ID, teachers and their children may participate in this vaccination session.
Please complete the vaccination payment form (available soon at the Cashier office and the Clinic) andmake your payment to the Cashier. Payment must be made not later than Wednesday, May 18. Thevaccines will then be ordered and no further registrations can be accepted.
If you have any questions please contact Jowell Custodio or Dorothee Binsfeld at the clinic:
Clinic numbers: 840 8581 (Dorothee)/82 (Jowell) Clinic email: [email protected]
Please note:
• Influenza and Tetanus (Tdap) vaccines can be given simultaneously.
• The Flu shot will not give you a 100% protection even the strains included in the vaccine
• Influenza virus shots do not protect against common cold, sometimes also referred to as “flu”.• The minimum age for the vaccination in school is 3 years. Infants 6 month and older may be vaccinated by their
pediatrician.
• Children (9 years or younger) with no prior flu shot will need a second shot after 28 days.
• Pregnant women should get their shot from the second trimester onwards.
• The “Southern hemisphere vaccine”, which we use, covers all relevant strains of the Northern hemisphere aswell.
• Please refrain in case of egg protein allergy.
• Vaccines will be solely administered at the clinic and cannot be handed out. All unused vaccines will beforfeited.
