The last fortnight has seen a number of significant events for students, most notably the College Healthy Living Day which was the first time the College in its current configuration has come together at a campus for an activity. Although we join together for swimming and athletics events, they are held at other sites and this event was made all the more special as it was initiated by the students through the Student Representative Committees working together across all three campuses. Morwell students travelled to Churchill Campus and University Campus students also came across to join with the Churchill students in a series of healthy living activities. Students were able to participate in two activities before joining together for a healthy lunch comprising rolls and fruit. The activities included Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, Brain Gym, and there was to be a Teen Gym circuit however the weather didn’t favour us and had to be withdrawn at the last moment. Prior to enjoying lunch all students and staff headed to the oval for an historic College photo. A huge thanks to all the students and staff, including The Smith Family workers based in the college who contributed to the organisation of the event. Thanks also to the external supporters of the day including Samantha Brick who ran the Brain Gym session, Lorraine Strobel from YDHS who ran Tai Chi, Mark Martin and his team from Rhee Tae Kwon Do, and Michelle Masters from Latrobe Leisure Centre for the Teen Gym. Other highlights of the past fortnight include the Year 9 students orientation day at the University Campus as many prepare to select a VCE subject to be included in their Year 10 program. Year 8 boys headed to the Italian Australian Club for an Inspiring Young People event where they listened to male speakers who have attended local schools and have achieved success in a variety of endeavours. The presenters then had lunch with the students and there was plenty of opportunity to discuss their experiences. General News

Pie Drive

Kurnai Churchill recently had a pie drive for people to buy different assorted pies. Proceeds from this Pie Drive will be going towards Kurnai College’s Peer Support Program. Our Peer Support Leaders will be participating in 3-Day leadership training at ‘The Summit’ Camp, for which we will be using all money raised to lower the cost of this camp for our young leaders. The pies will be delivered some time on Thursday the 29th of October and can be picked up from then on.

We currently have lots of things happening at the junior year levels. The year 7’s have just had their immunisation needles, which surprisingly most students handled extremely well. Both year 7 and 8 students have been busy working on the end of year drama productions. In P.E the focus has been basketball with both year levels utilising our new gym facility for fitness based activities.

Extra Transition for Year 7 students This Thursday we will be having a number of primary students visiting the school as part of a program that assists selected students in making a successful transition to high school. Some year seven and eight students may be called upon to assist in working with the primary students.

Junior School Reward for Effort Both year levels are still working towards being rewarded for demonstrating our campus positive behavior focus areas. Week one and two were very positive weeks by both year levels, unfortunately last week and the start of this week has seen a drop in the learning environment which in turn means that both year 7 and 8 students will need to have a very good week ahead. The aim is to have 80% of classes assessed as performing well and promoting a good learning environment. If met, the reward will be an afternoon lunch and games session to take place at the end of week 5. Raffle tickets are also still being handed out to students who display positive behaviours.

Inspiring Young People Event: Year 8 This Thursday the 29th, 32 of our year 8 boys will be taking part in an event aimed at giving young boys greater insight into career paths, whilst providing the boys with an opportunity to have a sit down, three course meal with a group of adults. Wednesday afternoon the boys took part in a fine dining etiquette session, where they were given some examples of guiding questions that they could ask the adults attending in relation to their career paths. The male adults who attend are all ex Kurnai students that have experienced success in their chosen pathway. As a college we see it as a fantastic initiative that gives our students a great deal of insight into the diversity in jobs available within our community as well as providing the boys with some “food” for thought. This event has always

been a huge success and we always receive lots of positive feedback from the students involved.

Visual Displays: Pictured is a Persistence board that our year 7 students created in Art as part of the work we did around the attitude of Persistence in Term 3. We now have students doing some further work on designing three more boards which will all be displayed in the Year 7 centre for the start of Head-Start.

Year 9 Orientation Day

Celebration Day

Permission forms will be handed out soon for our Year 9 celebration day. This year all Year 9 students will spend the

morning at the Skate Centre in Moe followed by a BBQ lunch in Apex Park in Moe. The cost of the day is significantly

subsidised and, if last year is any indication, everybody will have a great time. Celebration day is the last day of Year 9,

Thursday December 3rd.

It was fantastic to see our Year 9 student’s

participation in the University campus orientation day

on Wednesday the 28th. With only 3 students absent

on the day it highlights how well they have taken on

board what they have learnt in Team Time about the

VCE. It is particularly pleasing to know that our

students are taking an active role in their career

development and future learning pathways. Most

students have returned their blue selection form for

their subject preference. I will be taking the forms to

the University campus on Thursday afternoon,

November 5th. Please ensure your form is returned by

that date.

Another form for parents/guardians to look out for is the Year 10 electives preference sheet. Mr White is currently

working on the 2016 timetable and he will short be letting me know which subjects will be available in the elective

blocks. All students will receive an information sheet with a brief description of each elective and a preference sheet

that must be signed by their parents/guardians. The elective units run for a semester, therefore, students who miss

out on a particular elective will most likely have an opportunity to choose that subject in 2nd semester as many

subjects run in both semesters.

Exams

With only 3 weeks of classes left before the English and Mathematics examinations on Tuesday November 24th, it is

important that all students are setting aside time to review 2nd semester’s work. It is also important to ensure that

students have a working scientific calculator with new batteries for their mathematics examination. Mobile phones,

computers, iPads and iPods are not permitted in the examination room. I encourage all parents/guardians to

encourage their child to leave these devises at home on the day of the examinations or ensure they have a lock on

their locker so they can store their devises securely.

A reminder to call our absence hotline 51323711 preferably before 9.00 am

if your child is not going to be at school. This will ensure your child’s absence is

recorded correctly and you don’t receive a phone call from our office.

Year 10

By now VCE and VCAL students timetables for headstart and 2016 have been finalised for almost all students, with

just a hand full of clashes be worked out with the students and careers teachers at the University campus. It has

been a long subject selection process but very worthwhile to ensure each student has an individual timetable of

subjects appropriate to their needs.

The final few weeks for Year 10 students at the Junior campus will be extremely busy. They are currently finishing

off their final topics in their core units and will shortly begin examination preparation for the VCE subject and four

core Year 10 subjects; English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities. Year 10 students will sit their examinations

over 3 days, Monday 23rd to Wednesday 25th of November. The Year 10 Formal is on Thursday 26th of November,

with an alternative timetable running on that day which is the last day of Year 10 attendance. Friday 27th of

November is report writing day at the University campus. This will give students the chance to organise stationary

for the VCE and VCAL headstart programme beginning on Monday 30th November. Headstart on the University

Campus finishes on Friday November 11th.

Attention Year 10 and Year 11 students Kurnai College VCE Mini Booklist for 2016

Students studying VCE English, VCE English as an Additional Language and English Literature in 2016 need to buy some of the textbooks this year so that these books can be read during Headstart and over the holidays. The VCE English teachers will expect that students have read the listed books by the end of the summer holidays. Hitting the road at full speed, the musical entourage are out and about performing at primary schools, as well as preparing the final touches for the College Music Concert.

Kurnai College Music What’s Happening ……

On The Road Again Primary Schools Tour

This week saw the start of a 3 week tour to Primary Schools. Music students from all campuses were On The Road per-forming at Commercial Road, Boolarra and Hazelwood North Primary Schools.

The shows featured a program that was diverse in musical styles and in the instrumentation present in each ensemble. As always, the primary school teachers and students were excited to see some familiar faces that were part of the Kurnai College Music Tour.

This year’s shows also featured “Guest artists”, that is, student group from the host primary school to perform to all present. Commercial Road featured their Lunchtime Recorder Group, Boolarra featured a grade 6 student singing and playing guitar, and Hazelwood North presented their Choir and at the very end their whole school performed to us visitors.

Collaboration of students from a variety of campuses in working together in terms of song selection and assisting each other in the setting and packing up of gear was a very worthwhile experience to witness.

Our Kurnai students were demonstrating the poise as well as the interaction required in communicating their work to the audience. Our students were all promising Kurnai College ambassadors and advocates for music in our community.

College Music Concert

Once a year all students studying music at Kurnai College will be gathering in the one location to strut their stuff. The evening will show the entire Kurnai College community the diversity that exists throughout our college with the musical pathway that currently exists from years 7 through to year 12.

The College Concert will be held on Monday 9th November at Kurnai College Morwell Campus, in the Hexagon, commencing at 7pm. Entry cost – gold coin

Fundraising

Bagged Aluminum drink cans are being collected to raise funds to purchase Music Stand Banners. Bagged Cans can be

taken to the front office and mention that it’s for Music.

The Arts Are Alive At Kurnai Churchill

The 2015 Kurnai Churchill Arts Festival will officially open on Tuesday, November 10 in the language center at

6pm, featuring some of the best of the whole range of arts programs running at Churchill.

The exhibition will be on display after school on Tuesday for early viewing, featuring paintings and drawings

from a rejuvenated visual arts program, a fashion show of handmade hats, sculpture in wood and metal

(creative transformations of bikes), and a fascinating display of the culinary arts.

On Tuesday night the yr 7 plays happen in the theatre at 7pm. Four theatre productions will happen during the

festival on November 10,12,17,19. Year 7 and 8 students present original scripts, and the advanced class will

present adaptations of the popular films, Wild Child and The Breakfast Club.

Traralgon students attending University Campus and Churchill Campus Students who are not attending their closest school are not eligible for conveyance allowance (assistance with financial costs to travel to school.) We encourage families to purchase either a Student Yearly or Half Yearly Concession Card with MYKI Card from their local V/Line Station. This allows your child to travel anywhere within Victoria for free as per PTV website terms and conditions. Concession cards can be used on the following services:

train, tram and bus passenger services operating in metropolitan Melbourne on train and bus passenger services operated by V/Line throughout regional Victoria

BUSES TO AND FROM SCHOOL FOR 2016

STUDENTS WHO LIVE IN MORWELL AND ARE CURRENTLY IN YEAR 10 AND WILL ATTEND UNIVERSITY CAMPUS IN 2016 Students who are eligible to travel from Morwell to University Campus for their Year 11 classes for 2016 have been issued with Conveyance Claim Form (Bright Green) and Form 1 : DET & PTV Application for Permission to Travel (Pale Yellow) that needs to be completed and returned by next Wednesday 20th October, 2015. MORWELL CAMPUS STUDENTS YEAR 10 2016 Students have now been issued with Form 1 : DET & PTV Application for Permission to Travel (grey form) that is to be signed by parents and student and returned to the General Office by 20th October 2015. This will enable them to travel to and from University Campus in 2016.

COUNTRY BUS TRAVELLERS 2015/2016 We have recently conducted an audit of Boolarra, Hazelwood North and South, Whitelaws Track, Jeeralang and Yinnar Buses and it would appear that there are an increasing number of students who are on our bus rolls that are not regularly catching these services. Please be aware that if the number of students continues to decline (‘bottoms on seats’) on some of these services they will be reviewed accordingly by DET/PTV. Our College has worked hard to deliver the best outcome for our families and continues to apply to adjust these services to meet the needs of our students. Please ensure your child is on the bus more than fifty percent of the time.

ANTICIPATED LOADINGS FOR 2016 Please ensure that if you know of any children that will need to start using these services in 2016 (either new or change of address) that they contact the school to ensure they are on our bus rolls. Services are reviewed by DET/PTV annually at this time and we need to ensure that they are included as being part of our Bus Network. Any enquiries regarding school bus services please contact Leonie Mackie on 51650 610 or ring your Campus General Office who will refer your enquiry.

If at any time you change your address and you are an eligible bus traveller, new bus forms will need to be completed for your child.
