Character
Counts Quote Of the Week:
Our duty to be respectful
requires that we treat others with
courtesy and consideration.
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the month of October! It is hard to believe that the students have been in school for 31 days. Being a part of the Erickson Family and working with Soaring Eagles on a daily basis is not only a joy, but a privilege. What makes Erickson Elementary School so Special? It is the commitment by parents and staff to work together to achieve more (third line of the school pledge). Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have a question or a comment related to your child’s education. We value communication and feel it is essential that parents know what is happening while students are at school. Besides email, newsletters, and phone calls, Erickson also utilizes Twitter as a means to keep parents informed of events at the school. If you have not done so already, please sign-up for a twitter account and start following Erickson Elementary School @D13Eagles. Many teachers also have twitter accounts and send classroom updates and pictures of students throughout the school day. Besides keeping parents informed, twitter provides us the opportunity to know about student interests outside of the school setting. Parents are able to let the school know what is going on at home by sending pictures and/or comments about weeknight and weekend events. Want to recognize your student for working hard on a classroom assignment? Want the school to know about a sporting event over the weekend (perhaps your child’s team won 1st place in a soccer tournament). Tweet a picture and/or comment of your student and include @D13Eagles in the tweet and the school will receive notification of the tweet. If you would like the classroom teacher to receive a notification, use the classroom teacher’s twitter account. The school can use your tweets to enhance connections with students and incorporate student interest into lessons and activities. If you have questions about the use of twitter or how to get connected, please contact the principal by phone or email.
Thanks for your continued support of Erickson Elementary School. Sincerely, Patrick Haugens Principal
Parent Reminders Parents, please note the following: If your child’s dismissal plans change, please send a note to the classroom teacher in the morning. Please contact the office before 2:00 pm if there is a last minute change in dismissal. If your child needs to be picked up during the school day, he or she will not be called to the office until a parent or guardian arrives. Please note, the drop off time for students in the morning should not be before 8:25 am. Adult supervision begins at 8:25 am. If dropping a lunch off for your child, please have the bag or box clearly labeled with your child’s name.

Dear Parents and Families:
Reading for pleasure inside and outside of school has real and long‐lasting benefits. It unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
Set the example. Let children see you read.
Have a collection of books in the home. Update this collection routinely to keep pace with changing tastes and reading skills.
Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings to school the books kids want to read. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Your kids will bring home a wish list, please take the time to help them fill it out. During the school day on Wednesday each classroom will visit the fair and take a closer look. Then on Thursday, they will revisit the fair with their classroom and purchase books.
Book Fair dates: 10/8/2014 – 10/9/2014 Shopping hours: 10/8/2014 8:30am ‐ 6:00pm, 10/9/2014 8:30am ‐ 2:00pm Special activities: The Golden Ticket and Diary of a Wimpy Kid pre‐ sale order form
Before your student visits the Book Fair, be sure to download the Book Fairs app to help you find the right books for your child. For more information, visit: scholastic.com/apps/bookfairs. If you are unable to attend the Fair in person, we invite you to visit our online Book Fair at scholastic.com/fair. Our online Fair is available from 10/06/2014 to 10/26/2014. We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school library. Sincerely, Erickson PTO
