    Anumber of crimes on the

East Coast Road in recentmonths have gone unre-ported, according to relia-

ble sources. While some incidents of crime

on the stretch get reported, espe-cially on the beach stretch andadjoining areas, a number of seri-ous offences are covered up bythe police a move reportedly togive a clean chit and portray theECR as crime-free zone. Appar-ently, only 25 percent of the of-fences come to light and the restare ingeniously buried.

Sample some of the crimes that were reported: on November 19,a cabbie from Mylapore wasfound dead in an open field be-hind the Mayajaal complex withhis throat slit and a stab woundon his chest. There are still noleads in the case. A Tamil actorshouse on ECR was broken into afew months when he and hisfamily had gone on a holiday to

Thailand. Cops are still clueless. But at least a couple more

crimes were hushed up: a ne-phew of an actor-politician andhis friends were robbed of theirlaptops and other belongings. Anewly-wed couple was robbed ofeverything valuable, includingthe thali, after they took a strollon the beach, a little away fromthe beach resort where they were

staying. The list of offences, mainly un-

reported ones, goes on and on.Apart from these, a number of

cases of couples being harassedand women molested on thesands of the ECR go unreported.

And, in some incidences, even ifthe victims approach the copsthey back off following hostiletreatment by latter.

Taunted with questions like:What is your business on ECRor What is your connection withthis girl, the victims are literallybeing shooed away by the cops.

A former Assistant Commis-sioner of Thoraipakkam reminis-ces about a case sometime ago

where a girl was raped by a grof fishermen after her compa

was tied up.Initially, the girl came forw

to lodge a complaint but sooncided not to and the case closed, says the officer. He says that a minimum of fivecidences of crime, both bigsmall, happen on the ECR strevery week.

Many people, mainly coudont realise the danger that await them on the ECR followtheir quest for isolated locato spend some leisure time, officer added, admitting thatof cases go unreported andalso hidden by the khakis.

Priced between Rs. 3 and Rs.600, choice, clearly, is a toughtask. The bindis come with Swa-rovski, stones and kundan workand could range from tiny ones asbig as a dot to the more elaborateones that are an accessory ontheir own.

We source the bindis from allover the country, chiefly Mum-bai, Delhi and Kolkata. Nothingfrom Chennai though, as only theplain latex ones are availablehere, says Modi. Besides, thestore also makes it own bindis. We can even make bindis in fiveminutes, right in front of the cus-tomers eyes, he adds.

ndia will approach Wednes-days fifth One-Day Interna-tional against England as the

start of a new series afterclinching a decisive 4-0 lead, withthe tourists out to salvage somepride. A 7-0 whitewash will cata-pult India to the second spot inICCs ODI team rankings. Indianvice-captain Virender Sehwagsaid coach Gary Kirsten wants thehosts to play with the same in-tensity even though the seven-match series had been comforta-bly won already.

Gary said we should see theremaining matches as a three-match series and try to win themall, Sehwag said ahead of theday-night match at the Barabatistadium in this coastal easterntown. India are expected to throw

in new faces for the rest of theseries as the selectors attempt tobuild a strong base for the 2011

World Cup, to be hosted in South Asia. National under-19 captainand top-order batsman

Virat Kohli, left-arm spinner Pra-gyan Ojha and recalled all-roun-der Irfan Pathan could make their

first appearances in the series onWednesday. There could be a fur-ther reshuffle for the last twomatches, in Guwahati on Satur-day and New Delhi on December2. Bengal pacer Ashok Dinda andprolific middle-order batsmanCheteshwar Pujara may get a lookin along with a few others prom-ising youngsters.

    Testing timesEngland, meanwhile, will use

the remaining games to get usedto the fervent atmosphere inSouth Asian cricket ahead of the

World Cup, and save themselvesfrom further criticism at home. Some of the lads have not played

a great deal in India, played infront of these type of crowds withthe attention on cricket you getover here, said all-rounder An-drew Flintoff. The World Cup isover here in a few years time, sothe more opportunities to play

out here and develop your skillson these type of wickets, the

more it will be beneficial tothis group of lads. Flintoffsaid a good display in the re-maining one-dayers will helpEngland gather momentum

for the two-Test seriesstarting in Ah-

    medabadon

December 11. We have got threegames left in this series and weare going to have to get someth-

ing out of them, the Lancashirestar said. We cant win the se-ries, so its down to our own per-sonal pride and also trying to gainsome momentum going into theTest series.

    Gearing up for the Testseries

Flintoff, however, warnedteammates not to think of theTest matches just yet. I think it

would be dangerous to thinabout anything other than theseone-day matches because wecould get found out even more,he said. The way India haveplayed, theyve been ruthless. They have outplayed us in every

department. They are very welldrilled and have learnt a lot ofnew skills with bat and ball, and

we have been found wanting a lit-tle bit.

Flintoff bats for IPLAndrew Flintoff has blamed Englands dismalshow in the ongoing one-day series squarely ontheir non-participation in the Indian PremierLeague, which he believes has helped Indianplayers develop their game by leaps and bounds.I think through playing the shorter form of thegame they (India) have developed new skills withboth bat and ball, and wehave been found wanting a

little bit, Flintoff said. Theirgame has developed throughplaying Twenty20 cricket, youjust have to look at the waythe guys hit the ball and thepositions they get into. Youalso look at the bowling skillsthat Zaheer Khan and IshantSharma have too. They are developing slowerballs and yorkers. The England all-rounder also sought to clarifythat the reason for his teamamtes keenness toplay in the IPL was not just the big bucks theycould earn through it. A few of our players arekeen to go to the IPL. The thing that most peoplewrite about when they mention the IPL is thefinancial rewards, but it should also be looked atas something that helps with a playersdevelopment, Flintoff told Independent.

As the 2008 tennis season endedin this unlikely city with Fer-nando Verdasco buried under apile of delirious teammates, the

inescapable conclusion was that ithad been a great year for Spaniardson the road. Rafael Nadal left the is-land comforts of Majorca and hustledto his fourth straight French Open ti-tle, his first Wimbledon title and hisfirst Olympic gold medal.

Although the Davis Cup no longercarries the same weight in the UnitedStates, La Copa Davis still meansplenty in other parts of the world, in-cluding Argentina, where it sharedthe front pages with Diego Marado-

nas debut as the coach of the Argen-tine national soccer team. But in theend, David Nalbandian and the Ar-gentines did not receive the kind ofattention they were counting on astheir bid to win tennis premier teamtitle unravelled once more.

Fractured ArgentinaInstead of dissecting a historic

sports triumph, their chroniclers were left to dissect fractured teamunity, Nalbandians prickly personal-ity and the decision of the team cap-tain, Alberto Mancini, to resign andlet someone else attempt to inspire

Argentina to its first Davis Cup. Ithink for all of us to pull in the samedirection requires an effort; it hap-pens, but it demands a lot, Mancinisaid in a news conference at whichthe questions and answers were fullof emotion. Im not just talkingabout tennis players. Im talkingabout the country as a whole.

    Spanish success

Spanish teams, for the moment, donot have such problems after a year in

which the mens soccer team won theEuropean championships and themens basketball team gave the

American Redeem Team a scare inthe Olympic final. Now, Spains DavisCup squad has managed to win de-spite the absence of Nadal. Im reallyproud to share this prize with these

players, the departing Spanish cap-tain, Emilio Sanchez Vicario, said. For me, its the biggest prize of mylife. Spain has won its three cups in2000, 2004 and 2008, all Olympic

years, which is probably no coinci-dence considering that overstuffedOlympic years put a major strain ontennis stars and inevitably favour thenations with the biggest reserves ofable and willing talent. Spain is not asdeep as it was several seasons ago,but it still had much better backups inFeliciano Lopez and Verdasco than

Argentina could muster when its newstar, Juan Martmn Del Potro, pulledup lame during his opening-day loss

to Lopez. It is hardly a surprise thathealth problems were a major factorin mens tennis this year. Nadal bare-ly played after September. Roger Fe-derer, whose intelligent schedulingand attention to detail had kept himrelatively injury free for years, la-boured through a challenging season.

Buall the directors who are makinfilms for me are like my childrenI give them full freedom to makfilms the way they want. Whethey go on the sets, they take theiown energy there. If any of my children want tleave home, Ill tear up the contract. But the legalities are important in the current corporatclimate, Johar says.
