Birth of SwarathmaMost bands are formed during

college days by some passionateand budding talented studentsand they vanish in course of timebut Swarathma, the folk fusionband is an exception. Althoughthere was a span of time when theband was inactive, they cameback with few new members tocontinue their all time passion.Classical music trained singer Va-su, founder of Swarathma recalls,“It was tough to reform our bandthat was started in 2002 as some

of our band members went off but thankfully our new team—Jishnu on bass guitar, lead guita-rist Varun and Montry on drumsand Pavan a percussionist andSanjeev lead violinist are also ve-ry talented and dedicated to theband besides their other profes-

sions. Two weekdays we practiceand on weekends we give perfor-mances.”

Folk melodies  When it comes to composing

songs, the band which boasts of about twenty odd songs, it is

completely a group effort and thegenre of music is folk fusion. Thepopular peppy numbers—PatteSare, Eshu Allah aur Krishna andPyaasi, blend of folk and rock highlight social messages—ill ef-fects of urbanisation, hypocrisy in the name of religion and Kaveriissue respectively. A noteworthy mention is that all the lyrics areoriginal and penned down by Va-su. “We sit together and composethe songs as each of them aretrained musicians with someamount of experience. Thethemes of our songs are a reflec-tion of our thoughts. Sometimes,I also take help of my friends whoare strong in Hindi while writing

the lyrics,” says Vasu.

Laurels and the path aheadTheir first tryst with fame was

when they bagged the best bandtitle in national level contest or-ganised by Radio City in 2008 andthat’s when their first CD was cut

by EMI Virgin Records. Soon   were rated four-star by the ing Stone magazine. The icinthe cake was when they werlected as one of the best bandrenowned UK based music ducer John Leckie at the conheld by British Council.

Vasu says, “We are one ofive Indian bands who got seed out of several others acrosnation. Leckie has producedalbum—where each band two of its newly composed so

We will be launching thesongs in Mumbai at the enthis month and in May we wiat London for the launch ofalbum.” They have also particted at the SARC nation bandtival at Delhi. The band is eagerly awaiting the result o

Asian band contest held at Sipore. Hope some lady knocks their door again. Ask V

whether they are coming up a video for their album, he

up, “Soon as we return from Ldon, we plan to shoot onJune.” Few of their songs havecome popular in Bollywood. Vsums up, “There are talks some people in the industry

India may get a virtual wal-

kover to the next round of the Davis Cup after Tennis

Australia continued to voicetheir disapproval over Chennaias the host city for the Asia-Oceania Zone Group 1 tie fromMay 8-10. The Australians, whohad their first appeal for a venuechange turned down by the In-ternational Tennis Federationon Friday, are again expected toapproach the Davis Cup boardof directors. According to sourc-es in Tennis Australia the asso-ciation will pitch for Singaporeas a possible neutral venue.

Confirming their move to theITF, Darren Pearce, media man-ager for Tennis Australia, said

over the phone: “Yeah, we are

again going to approach the ITFfor a change of venue with somefresh facts.” However, he re-fused to elaborate what those

fresh facts are. But another offi-cial at TA were more forthcom-ing and said that players likeformer world No. 1 Lleyton He-

witt and burly Chris Guccionehas expressed their concernover the security situation inChennai prior to the Lok Sabhaelections.

Tamil Nadu goes to poll onMay 13 and with the Indian Pre-mier League already moved outof the country for security fearsduring the polls are said to haveinstilled fear in the minds of the

  Australian players.Elaborating on the appeals,

Nick Imison, ITF’s communica-tions officer said: “Tennis Aus-

tralia has until 1.00pm (UK time)

on Thursday, 23 April to submitan appeal, and we are expecting an appeal by this time. The ap-peal will then be considered as

soon as possible by the ITF’sBoard of Directors.”

Expressing their satisfactionover the security arrangementsat the SDAT Stadium, venue forthe tie in Chennai, Imison add-ed: “The ITF’s security consult-ants have already complied theirreport, which was presented tothe Davis Cup committee. If there is another appeal theBoard of Directors would con-sider all the existing materialand also any added informationavailable at that time.”

Meanwhile, All-India Tennis  Association secretary, AnilKhanna, said he expected the

 Australians to field a full-fledged

side. “It’s their prerogative if

they want to field a second-string side. It is desirable that they sendthe best possible squad but at theend of the day it’s their decision,”Khanna said. “Security arrange-ments will be at par with any in-ternational tournament and if necessary we will also engage pri-vate security guards.”

Chennai city police commis-sioner K. Radhakrishnan said thatadequate security will be provid-ed for the tie. “It wouldn’t be aproblem for us as the electionsfalls three days after the tourna-ment. But we haven’t got an offi-cial word from the tennisfederation yet,” he added. ■

and college in the mornings andthen work on the plays,” says R.

Nageswara Rao, or Babji, whonow handles Surabhi’s day-to-day functioning.

Surabhi is particularly famedfor its spell-binding visual effects,a factor that has garnered it anaudience spanning all ages. Andthey’re fiercely protective abouttheir “trade secrets”.

Sunil Vishnu, co-director of Evam, at a press conference onMonday to announce PathalaBhairavi  and   Maya Bazaar re-called, “I once asked them if they’ll teach us a few of their vi-sual effects tricks. I was told, ‘Su-nil, everyone in Surabhi is family. The only way we’re going to tell

you anything is if you marry one

These are thedays of mini-malist theatre,

where awooden chair couldbe the life centre

and sole prop of atwo-hour skit withthree characters.Surabhi, clearly, comes from anoth-er era. And it’scoming to Chennai.

Evam, Chennai’svery own entertain-ment company, isbringing Surabhi tothe city on April 25and 26. Surabhi, orSri VenkateswaraNatya Mandali, willbe performing twoof their plays, Path-ala Bhairavi (April 25) and  MayaBazaar (April 26), at Music Acad-

emy.For starters, Surabhi is a 124-year-old drama group that owesits name and origin to a tiny dis-trict in Kadapa district in AndhraPradesh. Staging mythologicalplays in various parts of the coun-try for over a century, Surabhi’splays are the stage version of my-thology you see on film. Think la-doos magically flying into hungry demon mouths, mid-air arrow fights, song-and-dance, rolling chariots, light tricks, fireworks…The kind of visual spectacle many tech-age theatre buffs would beleft trying to decode.

Surabhi is an ‘only family’ unit. Not one person you see onstage

or backstage is from out of thefamily. Doesn’t the younger lotrebel for a change of profession?

“We’ve never had that prob-lem. We are 60 people, all fromthe family, performing at present.I have 16 students under me,

which range from those studying in class I to those doing their M.A.and M.Phil. They finish school

of our daughters’.”On their famed visual effects,

Babji says, “Even during the daysof no electricity, we were famousfor it. Now, because of all the

A.C.-D.C. engines, we have be-come highly advanced.”  MayaBazaar , he says, is watched with alot of interest from start to endbecause of the visual effects.

Is there any ‘vacation’ time forthe group, we wonder. “We per-form everyday. There are times

when we do even morning shows. In a 365-day year, we might evendo 400 shows,” says Babji. “In the

year 2005-06, we did 421!”“There is no obscenity or vul-

garity. And irrespective of wheth-er there are 500, 50 or five peoplein the audience, we perform.” ■

The clash of dates between the 15th Lok Sabha election and the IPL forced thelucrative League to cross shores toSouth Africa for the second edition of

the tournament. But with the match timings

clashing with election rallies, politicianshave come up with a plan to install giantscreens at rallies to ensure greater footfalls.

Senior Congress leader and Minister forScience and Technology, Kapil Sibal says:“People in India are mad for cricket. We willput giant screens at election rallies in Delhiso that people can watch the matches livebefore the rallies start.” Sibal is the Congresscandidate from the Chandni Chowk constituency.

Congress secretary and AICC spokesper-son Rajiv Shukla who is also the vice-presi-dent of the Board of Control for Cricket inIndia (BCCI) says: “The election rallies inIndia are usually in the evening and so arealso the IPL games. There’s nothing wrong in putting up some screens at election ral-lies so that those who come to hear the lead-ers can also catch the matches. It can be a

win-win situation for the public.”But on more official note, Shukla adds:

“The Congress party has not yet come out  with a decision to implement this ideaacross constituencies. But individuals aremost welcome to bring in their own ideasfor campaigning.”

The opposition too have warmed up tothe idea and the Bharatiya Janata Party tooare mulling to go the Congress way. “I havebeen showing cricket matches earlier tooand will do it this time also. I will put upLCD screens and IPL matches will be tele-cast so that voters don’t miss them.” BJPcandidate from New Delhi constituency Vi-

jay Goel says.Navin S. Kohli convenor of BJP’s media

cell, however, chose to ignore the matterand said the party is not giving much

thought about it. “I don’t think there’smuch to contemplate about this issue. It’s acall that any local level leader organising therally can take,” he says.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist)though does not feel election rallies needadded attractions to garner crowds. SeniorCPI(M) leader Nilotpal Basu says the wholeprocess is a systematic gameplan of the twoheavyweight parties to trivialise the elec-tion. “It’s a sad situation that so called na-tional parties and national leaders have tobank on the IPL to keep their supporterstuned to their rallies. They (Congress andBJP) are making a determined effort to veerthe public attention from the real issues,” hesays. ■

Bayliss warns of early retirementsSri Lankan cricket coach Trevor Bayliss has warned that players may opt for premature retirements if they are asked to tour troubledcountries in the aftermath of the Lahore terror attack on his team in March. Bayliss was in the Lankan team bus when it was ambushedby heavily armed terrorists in Lahore on March 3, leaving six players injured. And Bayliss said a fallout of the attack would be the fear omore such incidents among players, who would consider giving up the game altogether instead of risking their lives.“I am sure that will be the case,” he said. “If we happen to have a tour to a certain country and there is a little bit of a threat I am surthat some of those players will have that in the back of their minds,” he said. The 46-year-old coach said the players would be fightingback strong emotions the next time they board the team bus for a venue. “Obviously it is hard to know how everyone will react the firtime we jump back in the bus on the way to the ground somewhere. But at this stage everyone seems to be handling it pretty well,” hsaid.

The paparazzo blamed for spooking Madonna’s horse and sending theMaterial Mom tumbling to the ground this weekend says he is in-nocent.

“I arrived more than 10 minutes after the accident happened,”snapper Thomas Hinton told TheCelebrityTruth.com website Monday.

Madonna (50) fell from the horse while riding on Saturday at a friend’smansion in the ultra-exclusive Hamptons region outside New York.

She suffered minor bruises, according to her spokeswoman, and wasreported to be resting at actress friend Gwyneth Paltrow’s home in thearea.

According to the spokeswoman, “the accident occurred when the horseMadonna was riding was startled by paparazzi who jumped out of thebushes.” But Hinton – who snapped the sole picture of the fallen enter-tainer sitting on the sand arena surrounded by aides – said: “I am certain

there were no other photographers there before me.”Earlier in the day Hinton had taken pictures of Madonna, who waswearing a black riding helmet, black boots and a dark ensemble of jodh-purs and jacket, as she rode a bay horse in the arena. The New York Post published the exclusive shots.

Police in the area appeared to be siding with the photographer, celebri-ty gossip site TMZ reported.

TMZ quoted Sergeant Herbert Johnson saying: “There is no mention ofphotographers. It’s a matter of spin control that went out of control. Ifthey felt there was something else, they would have written ‘paparazzi’ inthe form – if they felt there was a problem.” ■

Predictions by Bhavesh N. Pa

This is a terrific day to launch a new venture.Brimming with dedication, you will accomplish yotasks efficiently. Avoid running into hot discussiowith your beloved. Measure your words, advisesGanesha.

Today, you want to call a spade a spade; butremember that you may not escape unhurt. Say right word at the right time. On the love front, practice diplomacy if you want your life to be asanctuary of love and joy.

With everything moving at a smooth pace, nothi

will bother you today. A good day to schedulemaintenance activities. As far as love life isconcerned, be ready to compromise and see wheit takes you.

Because you will get completely busy with work, your professional life will grab the limelight todais diligence and commitment which will add anextra rung to your success ladder. But amid all tignoring your sweetheart will be quite unfair.

Everything seems hunky dory today. With creativfinding its way in your work, you are sure to reca pat on the back from your bosses. On thepersonal front, chances are bright that you may a nod from that scintillating someone.

A day loaded with work awaits you. Toiling at toffice, you try to finish up all pending tasks on

hand. But ensure that you remain fit to handle nday’s work. After a hard day, you will want to balone.

Today will be motley of work plus pleasure. However, with an increase in responsibilities, youmust not expect a rise in pay, says Ganesha.Shopping with your darling may be a costly affaA day marked with a bundle of activities.

Launch of new projects is going to keep youengrossed in multiple tasks. The give-and-take inyour relationship will make way for a satisfying affair.Riding too many horses will make the reins slip

away from your hands. At the work place, gettinrestless is only going to confuse you further. Avobeing moody in your personal relationship and le

love show.

There are perfect days and then there are imperfones, like today. Your debilitated energies prevenyou from utilising a rather opportune day at thework front. Sharing sweet nothings with yourdarling will be on your mind, predicts Ganesha.

By sharing your knowledge and ideas, you willenlighten others today. Also, this will expand yoprofessional horizons. Diplomacy on the love fronshould help you control the ups and downs, opiGanesha.

Eying perfection, you may find that there issomething missing in the tasks you haveaccomplished. Even the amazing support from yocolleagues will fail to reassure you. Things shoulbe fine in the love lane.
