les intentions du workshop intensif
The aim of the intensive workshop
This exercise in ‘intensive envelope’ was born out of an understanding that it is impossible to separate architectural considerations from technical ones, and that technique can serve as a motor for architectural invention, however modest that may be. Usually, the time allocated to projects in a school of architecture, which is determined by the rhythm of the university calendar, prevents their technical aspects from being considered in too great detail, unless the architectural intentions are reduced in importance. In order to circumvent this apparent contradiction, we have chosen to create a project that encompasses three constraints: •The constraint of time; by radically limiting the project’s duration, •The constraint of place; by imposing a context which can be both well-defined and open to interpretation, •And most importantly, the constraint of the theme, which focuses the architectural and technical design towards a small element of the project, in this case a fragment of the ‘envelope’, or building skin.
Within these limits, the exercise proposes an environmental interpretation of architecture and of those technical aspects with which it is indissociably linked. It proposes to do this in two complimentary ways: •The substantial contributions, both direct and indirect, that architecture, and its production make within the environmental footprint of our daily acitivities and that of the buildings that house them, and •An understanding, within the specifics of a particular architecture, of the critical role played by the building’s envelope in energy transfers between the project’s microclimate and the macroclimate surrounding it.

These two aspects of envelope help to position the building not just geographically but also culturally. This reflection on the project’s internal climate is not just about meteorological data, and the envelope is not reduced to a mere technical dispositive requiring the manipulation of a few physical parameters in order to attain some kind of universal standard. The envelope is a tool for creating conditions of comfort which the architecture itself defines. By linking it intrinsically to practice, the envelope is conceived not as a width-less boundary but more as a margin or threshold, having dimensions and able to house specific functions.
From the pedagogical point-of-view, the exercise is structured in a coherent and precise way, from the general scale of climate to the very specific scale of the bay or façade-panel. It supports and reinforces the natural desire of every designer to give the project an identity, particularly in relation to its façade. The extent and variety of the issues which support this reflection around the notion of envelope tend towards a widening of possibilities which in turn discourages any premature ‘jumping to conclusions’ in graphic or imaging terms. The ‘climatic regionalism’of the exercise (intially the project is explored under two or three different latitudes) gives it a comparative dimension. The exercise progresses from climate to architecture, clarifying the latter’s role in the technical design. The human body, which is the basis of all of our relationships to technology, is twice called into play: first via the requirements for conditions of comfort, and then by the positioning of this body in proximity to the tactile envelope and its openings. Finally, the reduced scale of these elements allows them to be finalised in a complete way, particularly resolving those specific questions relating to materiality and construction.

The variety of climates studied during the three workshop sessions generated a considerable variety of responses. These are of course characterised by the climate in which they are located and by the relationship between climate and the strategies adopted in relation to energy performance and to the envelope’s permeability to water, air, solar gains and natural light. There is a great variety of approaches to the projects’ realisation in terms of the nature and degree of transformation of the chosen materials be they artificial, natural or even living systems, as well as to their degree of solidity which in turn implies varying degrees of porosity. Finally, the proposals vary greatly in terms of the level of definition of the envelope’s brief as defined by the design team for each workshop, and how well it has been integrated into its context, since these parameters have been deliberately left open to interpretation as part of the exercise.

The project is the result of a shared reflection between our three schools around the theme of ‘building envelope’. While each school deals individually with issues relating to sustainability within its own treaching programme, the objective of this workshop is to set up an intensive 10-day programme the aim of which is to bring together in a practice-based way different competencies and different points-of-view, similar to those within a design team or bureau d’études. Apart from the discipline of Architecture, the objectives and their anticipated outcomes necessitate an openness towards other disciplines such as engineering, façade design, climate control, physics, environmental science, sustainability and industrial design. This is why the requirement to form mixed groups of students is so important and not just from the teaching point-of-view, but linguistically and intellectually also.
The decision to hold the Workshop in a different member-school each year reinforces the importance of exposing the students to other ways of teaching and other cultural outlooks which is very enriching for them both on the personal and professional levels. The working groups themselves contain a variety of students of different languages and cultural backgrounds.
The Workshop is a time to meet others and to reflect upon some of the real issues the students will face in their working lives. The reality we face is that we can no longer dissociate the whole area of building and construction from the issues relating to climate change and sustainaiblity.

17
The project itself involves an intensive architectural and technical exercise through designing a building envelope which is deliberately located in different climate zones, none are generally outside of the member-schools’ regions. The envelope is considered as a climatic mediation element between the interior of the building and its environment, taking into account energy and material transfers which determine its thermal and hygrometric properties, and including its less quantifiable aspects such as spatial and sensory, which also have a bearing on the project’s endoclimate.
The general context of the exercise is the teaching of Architecture and the Technology of the Envelope in our respective schools. This teaching is strongly influenced by the preoccupation of sustainability, its effects on the area of construction and particularly of the building skin and façades, which are the primary areas of energy transfer between the building and its environment. This project has been integrated into the teaching programme as part of a natural progression within the cursus of each school.
The project aims to provide the students with the pratical and intellectual tools indespensable to their ability to take climatic requirements into account in the architectural and technical design of building skins. The workshop programme combines daily lectures with studio tutorials to produce a designed proposal which is capable of being built and which demonstrates to the students the importance of taking these environmental transfers into account when undertaking any design of a building’s envelope. By associating students of architecture, engineering and architectural technology, the project serves to open up these disciplines to each other. Apart from site visits in each of three countries, the workshop provides talks and presentations organised by the host-institute every year.

One of 20 ‘National Superior’ schools of Architecture in France. Its teaching ethos is based on the role of architecture in urban and developmental transformation. The school’s connections, both in terms of geographic proximity and shared teaching links with other higher institutes of learning such as the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées (a renowned engineering school) and the Institut Francais de l’Urbanisme (the French Planning Institute) widen the field of references of the workshop along common themes. The pedagogical principles on which the school was founded were developed towards the end of the 1990s by a group of teachers who were members of an association to promote the ‘city and its hinterlands’ (‘ville et territoires’).The following were the tasks allocated to the French school during the programme; • Preparation and coordination of the results of the preparatory meetings • The distribution of the workshop theme to the partners • Organisation of travel and accommodation for teachers and students • Invitiations to teachers and French visiting critics to the final jury • Coordination of the financial elements (travel and accommodation costs for students and visiting teachers, adminstrative costs of the workshop) • Drawing down of other funding streams.

The students were asked to design a ‘fragment’ of an architectural and climatic envelope which was to be inserted into a structure invented for the occasion whose dimensions and characteristics were as follows: • The solution was to be adaptable to a 5-storey building with a structural grid of 3 x 3.6m • It had to be able to house a space in which to live and to work within a maximum area of 25m².
The fragment’s orientation, its general configuration and its height above ground were all left to the groups’ own initiative. The first phase of the project was undertaken on the context opf two parallel climates; Los Angeles in California and Bangkok in Thailand.

The workshop seminar once again attempted to provide the mechanism for reasoned choices for the design of the facades both from the point of view of the thinking behind these choices as well as the making of the envelope itself. Three themes helped this thinking process; place, climate and technology. Confronting the student with constructional realities is an important dimension of the exercise and is represented by the scale of the work proposed as well as its materialisation. Our aim with this exercise was to more closely marry the ‘thinking’ with the ‘making’ of the project.

The climate of Lulea is continental because of its relatively high latitude and its relative distance from the Atlantic ocean. There are large seasonal variations between cery cold winters and mild, warm summers, which is due to the big differences in the length of the days between the summer solstice (more than 18 hours of sunlight) and the winter one (6 hours of daylight). The range of temperatures can go from 36 ºC to - 31 ºC.

volume of 25m³ with which to work and their
brief was to create a space for daily living, but
without any of the servicing requirements
such as bathrooms, kitchens etc in order that
their reflections would remain focused on the
architecture of the envelope and its response to
climate. The students in many cases interpreted
this brief as a simple room for contact with nature,
while providing shelter and controlling climatic
extremes. Two contrasting climates were chosen,
one in Ireland, another in the Caribbean, for the
first stage of the exercise.

projets
projects
projekte
project families
During the course of the exercise, in relation
to the sites, climates, programmes and their
interpretations, the students came up with a
multiplicity of architectural strategies in pursuit
of their thinking on the project. From the wealth
of responses generated, a number of recurring
themes emerged, reflecting both the specific
conditions of each project and the thematic
organisation of the exercise itself.
A detailed examination of the total output of
the three years has allowed us to compile a list
of these strategies. These are then used as the
basis for the classification of the projects when
presenting the results of the workshops. There are
four main categories to these strategies as follows:
1 - interaction with the site’s climate,
2 - an approach to the proposal’s materiality,
3 - the proposal’s capacity to respond to new
functions or to allow for new uses and finally,
4 - the contextual response, often only partially
realised, to the given site.
In the spirit of the logic of the exercise as set out
from the beginning, the ability of the envelope,
in its capacity as a climatic filter, to modify certain
types of energy and material transfers, was
given special attention by the students, most
particularly in relation to:
- The interactive properties of the
envelope in relation to heat transfer as functions
of its thermal resistivity and inertia,
- The means of controlling solar gains by
controlling orientation or by the arrangement of
openings and by either concentrating these gains
or, on the contrary, protecting the façade from
them,
- The control and the distribution of
47
air movements, be they external in terms of
exploiting prevailing winds or internal in the form
of ventilation of the spaces behind the envelope,
- The modulation of natural light,
which is inextricably linked to solar gains and its
redistribution within the spaces of the project.
The envelope’s performance as a climatic
membrane is closely linked to its material
properties. The projects are often characterised
by two strongly contrasting positions which can
have an effect on their performance. These are:
- The dichotomy of solidity versus
porosity which is behind the reliance of many
projects on the thermal inertia generally afforded
by a heavy skin, or on the other hand the rejection
of the thermal inertia approach which can be
counter-productive in certain climate typologies,
- The dichotomy of natural versus
synthetic materials, which can also be equated
with the high-tech versus low-tech approach,
seems to emanate from certain cultural and
aesthetic assumptions influenced by the project’s
geographic location.
While the exercise is motivated by the interaction
between climate on the one hand and an the
materiality of the envelope on the other, the
bulk of the proposals responded to these dual
questions by imagining a specific brief with
new uses drawn directly from the technical
requirements, such as:
- Elements of the brief, from the size of
a piece of furniture to that of a fully functioning
room, appear within some of the façades,
- The dynamic characteristics of the
envelope which are vital when adapting it to
external conditions (which can vary according to
the seasons or to the time of day) are interpreted
in a way that confers great flexibility of use in
certain cases,
- The groups also managed to integrate
through their proposals methods for collecting
rainwater or for the harvesting of energy or
even giving plants a fundamental role in the
functioning of their projects.
projektreihe
Im Verlauf des Projekts haben die Studenten
Vorgehensweisen zur Planung von
Gebäudehüllen unter Berücksichtigung
funktionaler, klimatischer und atmosphärischer
Bedingungen entwickelt. Aus der Vielfalt der
aufgezeigten Lösungen ergeben sich mögliche
Strategien im Umgang mit der Aufgabenstellung.
Sie spiegeln die besonderen Bedingungen des
Projekts wieder und beschreiben gleichzeitig den
thematischen Rahmen der Übung.
Aus der intensiven Auswertung der Ergebnisse
der vergangenen drei Jahren ist eine Liste
möglicher Strategien entstanden. Diese dienen
als Maßstab und Orientierung für zukünftige
Projekte und Workshops. Diese Strategien lassen
sich in vier Hauptkategorien einteilen:
1 - Auseinandersetzung mit dem Klima des
Standortes
2 - Umgang mit Baustoffen und Materialien im
Entwurf
Schwerpunkte gesetzt:
-.Untersuchung der Wechselwirkung
zwischen Gebäudehülle und Temperaturdifferenz
zwischen innen und außen, sowie die
Erforschung der Funktionsweise ihres
thermischen Widerstands
- Beeinflussung der solaren Einträge
durch die Ausrichtung und Anordnung von
49
Öffnungen sowie deren Steuerung
mittels Sonnenschutz.
- Regulierung und Steuerung der Be-
und Entlüftung durch Ausnutzung der äußeren
klimatischen Bedingungen z.B.
manifestiert
- vertreten eines Standpunkts am Ort
- Integration in die örtliche Situation
Wie die Ergebnisse zeigen, schränkt der
vorgegebene enge Rahmen der Übung nicht
ein, sondern im Gegenteil das Nachdenken
über Architektur, die Entwicklung realistischer
Details eröffnet eine große Palette an möglichen
Arbeitsweisen auch in Hinblick auf komplexere
Planungsaufgaben.
