The award was given away at the 8th Construction World Annual Awards 2010 on the 19th October 2010 at The Taj Lands End, Mumbai. Making this achievement even more special was the fact that the award was given by the Governor of Maharashtra, Shri Sanakaranarayanan and received by Mr. J. L Khushu, Chief Executive Officer, on behalf of the company amidst an elite gathering of industry stalwarts, bankers, bureaucrats and technocrats.

For Era T&D Ltd., it is a proud moment indeed with its state-of-the-art fabrication plant ready to take up commercial production of tower manufacturing and other structural fabrication consisting of steel angle sections. All imported machinery necessary for such manufacturing and structural fabrication has arrived and the best CNC fabricating lines are in place. With this, Era T&D is now capable of manufacturing towers with high precision with flexibility in manufacturing, regardless of product mix or number of towers. This development has paved the way for Era Buildsys Ltd and EPC T&D to offload their manufacturing load on Era T&D.

With the active efforts of its dedicated team, Era Buildsys Ltd has launched its Newsletter, Volume 1, 2010. Beginning with a brief introduction about Era Group, the newsletter goes on to educate about upcoming projects, current updation within the company, its achievements, media exposure, as well as its expanding network all over India. In the Western world, the birthday of Jesus Christ has been celebrated on December 25th since AD 354, replacing an earlier date of January 6th. The Christians had, by then, appropriated many pagan festivals and traditions of the season, which were practiced in many parts of the Middle East and Europe, as a means of stamping them out.

There were mid-winter festivals in ancient Babylon and Egypt, and Germanic fertility festivals also took place at this time. The birth of the ancient sun-god Attis in Phrygia was celebrated on December 25th, as was the birth of the Persian sun-god, Mithras. The Romans celebrated Saturnalia, a festival dedicated to Saturn, the god of peace and plenty, that ran from the 17th to the 24th of December. Public gathering places were decorated with flowers, gifts and candles were exchanged and the population, slaves and masters alike, celebrated the occasion with great enthusiasm.

In Scandinavia, a period of festivities known as Yule gave further impetus to celebration, as opposed to spirituality. As Winter ended the growing season, the opportunity of enjoying the Summer’s

bounty encouraged much feasting and merriment.

The Celtic culture of the British Isles revered all green plants, but particularly mistletoe and holly. These were important symbols of fertility and were used for decorating their homes and altars.New Christmas customs appeared in the Middle Ages. The most prominent contribution was the carol, which, by the 14th century, had become associated with the religious observance of the birth of Christ.

In Italy, a tradition developed for re-enacting the birth of Christ and the construction of scenes of nativity. This is said to have been introduced by Saint Francis as part of his efforts to bring spiritual knowledge to the laity.

Saints Days have also contributed to our Christmas celebrations. A prominent figure in today’s Christmas is Saint Nicholas, who, for centuries, has been honored on December 6th. He was one of the forerunners of Santa Claus.

Another popular ritual was the burning of the Yule Log, which is strongly embedded in the pagan worship of vegetation and fire, as well as being associated with magical and spiritual powers.

Celebrating Christmas has been controversial since its inception. Since numerous festivities found their roots in pagan practices, they were greatly frowned upon by conservatives within the Church. The feasting, gift-giving and frequent excesses presented a drastic contrast to the simplicity of the Nativity, and many people throughout the centuries, and into the present, condemn such practices as being contrary to the true spirit of Christmas.

Christmas is the most important festival of the Christians. It has, for them, the same significance as Diwali has for the Hindus and Id for Muslims. It is celebrated on 25th December every year with great pomp and show.

Why it is celebrated: This festival is celebrated in memory of the day on which Christ was born. Christ was the founder of Christianity. It is believed that he was sent to this world to save mankind.

Description of the celebrations: Great preparations are made for the occasion. All houses and churches are cleaned and white washed. The walls are decorated with paper flowers, pictures, looking glasses and wall buntings. All Christians, rich or poor, young or old, take part in the celebrations.

the Christmas tree: The most important part of the festival is the planting of the Christmas tree. A large branch of the tree is cut down. It is planted in one corner of the house. Then this branch is decorated with little toys such as dolls, birds, flowers etc. The Christmas tree looks very bright and beautiful.

Prayers and exchange of presents: At night, all the children of the house are called in. All sing songs and offer prayers to God who sent his Son, Christ, to earth to remove all sins and sufferings. After the prayers, all the members of the house and guests are given Christmas presents.

feats and dramatic performances:

Big feats are arranged on this occasion. Delicious dishes are served before all. People prepare the best food they can offer on that day. After the feast is over, it’s time for music, dancing and singing through the night. All gather in the church to pray to God that they may lead a happy life in the coming year.

Conclusion: Christmas is a festival of rejoicing for Christians all over the world. In the days of the British rule, all schools and colleges would be closed for fifteen days on the occasion of this festival.

The year 2010 was a great year for India in terms of achievements. We hosted the Commonwealth Games, got a new rupee symbol and saw our stock market buzzing from time to time. Our players brought laurels, and we hosted the President of the US and the Premier of France. We had growth in both the sectors of manufacturing and service. New car models, buildings and other infrastructure projects came up in various locations. We are doing exceedingly well in the Space department with commercial space launches for various organizations from all over the world - a matter of great pride.

However, there were some weak links which held us back in the year 2010 - the multiple scams, the price rise and our inability to cope with serial crimes and terrorism. We have not been able to keep our political and social systems clean; rampant corruption has taken its toll. We have also not been able to counter social crimes and injustice. The price rise for food commodities and other day-to-day utility products has been another concern for masses. Also, the massive food grain mismanagement has put a question mark on our food security. Though we unearthed so many scams through media and intelligence inputs, the fact that they remain unpunished ensures that they continue unabated.

These odds and evens in the year 2010 can be summarized as a success for India, though facing a lot of hurdles. But then, a lot of work still needs to be done to convert India from a developing nation to a developed nation. Our plea for a permanent UN seat will be more justified when we have a permanent solution to some of the problems we have faced in the near past. If we can solve those problems in the coming years, we can be proud of ourselves as a nation and as individuals.

Let’s hope for the best.

Thought entrance exams were meant only for science students, but these ‘PRATHAM’ people all together changed my mindset. Traveling all alone in the metro added more to the fun that gave me a glimpse of the adventures about to come. Thought of entering DU and doing Economic Honors and look at me now, studying in Amity and trying to become a lawyer. The year taught me that things won’t be as you thought, but they would definitely be according to what you want. Celebrating Christmas in India

India is a secular nation and houses every community. Christians are a minority here and form nearly 2.3% of the population. That, however, in no way lessens the fervour with which the festival of Christmas is celebrated here. The occasion is, in fact, celebrated not only by Christians but by people of other religions as well.

The tradition of Christmas observance was introduced here with the colonization of the country by the Europeans. Though the country gained its independence in 1947, many European customs and festivals stayed on. The fact that there is the presence of a Christian community in India has helped in maintaining these traditions. Today, Christmas is the biggest and most-loved festival of Indian Christians. The festival is also enthusiastically celebrated by people of other religions residing here.

Like in many other countries, Christmas is observed in India on 25th December. Everyone begins to prepare for the festival from nearly a week before. Business stores are decked up for the occasion with every gift shop packed with Christmas trees, presents, ornaments and other items of decoration that are bought by millions of enthusiastic celebrants of the festival.

For Indian Christians, especially the Catholics, the Midnight mass on Christmas Eve is a very important service and holds great religious significance. Every year, on the night of 24th December, all members of Christian families visit their local churches to attend the Midnight mass. On this night, churches in India are decorated with Poinsettia flowers and candles. The mass over, everyone relishes a mouthwatering feast of various delicacies, mostly consisting of curries. Thereupon, presents are given to one another and “Merry Christmas” is wished. India being a multicultural nation, many different languages are spoken here. In Hindi and Urdu, Happy/Merry Christmas is ‘Bade Din ki Mubarak’; in Sanskrit it is ‘Krismasasyashubhkaamnaa’;

in Bengali ‘Barodinershubhechhajanai’; and in Tamil it’s ‘ChristhuJayanthiNalvaalthukal’.

Nativity plays are staged in many schools (mainly the Christian ones) and churches on Christmas morning. The performances by young children depict the birth, life and actions of Jesus Christ and usually end with the singing of hymns and carols, and the visit of a person dressed as Santa to distribute candies/toffees to kids. In the metros, a smiling Santa Claus, entertaining children at departmental stores with toys

and gifts, is not an uncommon sight. Caroling processions on streets and thoroughfares can

also be seen on the night of 24th December.

A sizeable population of the Christian Community resides in Mumbai and is mainly Roman Catholics. It is a delight to watch their homes during Christmas. Every Christian home creates a nativity scene, often displaying a manger in the front window. Giant star-shaped paper lanterns are hung between the houses so that the stars float above you as you walk down the road. There is a provision of sweets, mainly home-made, in every household to welcome visitors during the occasion.

In Southern states, Christians often light small clay oil lamps and place these on the flat roofs of their homes to show that Jesus is the light of the world. In the North-western states of India, the tribal Christians of the Bhil folk take out caroling processions during the whole Christmas week and often visit neighboring villages to tell the Christmas story to people through songs.

In India, Father Christmas or Santa Claus is held to be the giver of presents to children from a horse and cart. As in the U.S., he is believed to deliver presents at the house of every kid who behaves well during the whole year. Santa Claus is known as ‘Christmas Baba’ in Hindi and ‘Christmas Thaathaa’ in Tamil.
