About UNICEF HK Over the past years, Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK) has been actively organizing educational and youth activities in Hong Kong with the aim of promoting the Children’s Rights and supporting the global missions of UNICEF. UNICEF HK focuses special efforts on enhancing Hong Kong students' understanding on Children’s Rights. It also assists students in developing the values, knowledge and experience required of global citizens. It enables them to be actively involved in their own individual growth and development and in their families, communities and global issues. Teaching Materials The teaching material, "Children in Crises: The Syria Crisis and the Refugee Crisis in Europe" is designed to provide support to primary and secondary school teachers facilitating them to teach students about issues related to child refugees. The purpose is for students to grasp the global status of refugees, the background and development of the Syrian war and the different responses on the Refugee Crisis from Syrian’s neighboring regions and European countries. Additionally, students can also enhance their understanding of how war deprives child refugees of their various rights forcing them to flee. The teaching materials include teacher handouts, student handouts, lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations and relevant teaching videos as references for teachers to design and plan the lessons. 1. Features of the Lesson Plans: The 3-Step Learning Process:The lesson plans introduce students to the "3-Step Learning Process” of "Exploring, Responding and Taking Action". Class activities start with the process of ‘Exploring’, to enable students to gain a deeper understanding of the issues of child refugees. Following this, students can conduct an analysis from multiple perspectives, establish a personal point of view, develop empathy, be aware of humanitarian issues, and commit to ‘Responding’ to related matters. In the final step students are encouraged to ‘Take Action’ to raise

public awareness on issues related to child refugees through active and positive action.

Lesson 4:Take action – Design a Poster for Child Refugee(30 mins)

The 3-step Learning Process: Taking Action• Students apply the knowledge learnt and

design a poster aimed at raising awareness on the refugee issues.

• Teacher encourages students to post the poster in the classroom or school notice boards during the World Refugee Day (June 20) to raise fellow students’ awareness on the issue.
