ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT
An environmental impact assessment is a formal process used to predict the environmental consequences of a plan , policy , program of project prior the implementation decision , it proposes measures to adjust impacts to acceptable levels or to investigate new technological solution.
INTRODUCTION:-

1) E.I.As began to be used in the year 1960 as part of
rational decision making
process.2) It involved a
technical evaluation that world lead to objective decision
making.3) E.I.A was made
legislation in the US in the NATIONAL
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY ACT
(nepa) in 1969.

*NEED OF E.I.A :-
1) To maintain quality of
environment it is necessary to study impacts of project on environment.2) This also suggests remedial
measures for development of
projects.

MAIN STEPS IN
E.I.A’s PROCESS :
-1) screening2) scoping
3) prediction & mitigation
4) audit

*1) SCREENING- Screening often results in a categorization of the
project and from this a decision is made on whether or not a full
E.I.A is to be carried out.2) SCOPING-It is the process of determining which are the most critical issues to study and will
involve community participation to some degree . It is at this early stage that E.I.A can most strongly
influence the outline proposal.3) PREDICTION AND MITIGATION-
Detailed prediction and mitigation studies follow scoping and are carried out in paralleled
with feasibility studies .

*4) AUDIT- Finally, an
audit of the E.I.A process is carried out some time
after implementation . The audit
serves a useful
feedback and learning function.

*THE MAIN LAWS OF E.I.A
IN INDIA-1) Water Act
(1974).2) Indian Wildlife
Protection Act (1972).3) Air
(Prevention & Control of
Pollution Act (1981).
4) Environment ( Protection) Act (1981)

*CONCLUSION-:1) E.I.A is a very beneficial step to check , whether
the project is environmental friendly or not .
2) Since economic development is
result of interaction
between natural resource and technology
supported by designed for
people , so all human activities
should be economic , social and environment
friendly.
