Integrated drive systems are at the heart of your machines and plants. They need to run both safely and reliably – often for decades and under harsh conditions. As a result they are frequently subject to extreme wear and tear, and these factors increase the risk of unscheduled downtime over the course of time. Retrofit for Integrated Drive Systems can avert these risks, and provide significant support for maintaining reliable plant operation over the long term. Retrofits reliably reduce the maintenance costs associated with an advanced life cycle and further increase plant availability.

As with new systems, retrofit solutions for Integrated Drive Systems take the entire drive train into account. This makes it possible to identify and utilize additional efficiency and energy-saving potential, for example by using energy-effi-cient components and integrating them intelligently into the automation environment with the TIA portal, or by implementing Remote Services and continiuous Condition Monitoring.

Retrofits are a key factor in long-term investment security, and they are also a valuable investment in their own right. Thanks to the potential savings, your investment in a retrofit usually pays off in just a few months, and quickly lowers operating costs over the long term by making additional potentials available.

Siemens offers an extensive retrofit program for Siemens products as well as other manufacturers, from duplicating, upgrading, and replacing individual components to imple-menting complex retrofit projects.

Retrofit solutions from Siemens offer clear benefits:• Higher productivity thanks to less downtime

and fewer outages as well as lower mainte-nance needs

• Long-term availability of spare parts and simplified spare parts management

• Comprehensive upgrades to the latest standards, including with regard to Totally Integrated Automation, communication, and diagnosis

• Improved energy efficiency thanks to an integrated approach

Greater efficiency, improved reliability, higher productivity

Your SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES belong to a durable, long-lasting and reliable family of converters that engineers have been installing worldwide since 1998. Between 2011 and 2014, however, production of these units was wound down in stages and discontinued, and this product line has now been replaced with the new SINAMICS series. Spare parts for the SIMOVERT family will be available until 2020. But if you incur faults or failures in your SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES after that time, you should anticipate that immediate reme-dies for system and plant downtime will not be readily available – unless you have a comprehensive supply of spare parts in stock.

Consequently, to ensure the future operation of your converters and thus of your entire plant, Siemens recommends that you replace your older or highly stressed units with the successor products SINAMICS G130/G150 and S120/S150 – for example, in conjunction with regular planned maintenance.

Ensure timely replacement of your SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES converters

Replace your SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES now, and you’ll benefit from the advan-tages offered by the SINAMICS product family:• Greatly reduced frame size

• Exceptionally quiet in their operation

• Fast device replacement thanks to modular design

• Additional networking possibilities via PROFINET, PROFIBUS and CAN

• Easy and convenient commissioning and diagnostics using the commissioning tool STARTER

• Simple performance monitoring via operator panel

The economical solution for greater efficiency –SINAMICS G130/G150 and S120/S150In many cases, it is possible to replace the component to be exchanged with a standard product from Siemens’ exten-sive product range. For your SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES, Siemens offers you an efficient yet economical solution: Replace your old or severely worn converters with the successor products SINAMICS G130/G150 or S120/S150. By changing from SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES to SINAMICS, you can continue operating your existing motors provided these are designed for power converter operation. The compo-nents can be replaced with little effort thanks to the easy accessibility of the individual modules and the simple cabling by plug-in technology. What is more, the converters are significantly more compact than the predecessor SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES. You benefit thereby from mini-mized downtime and outages for replacement work.

Long-term plant and system availabilityWith SINAMICS, Siemens offers you a platform based on state-of-the-art technical standards that meets the demand-ing requirements of today’s drive systems. You gain not only from new and improved functions, but also from increased spare parts availability for many more years to come – with simplified spare parts stocking and manage-ment as well.

Stepwise migration to SINAMICSFor drives coupled via a shared DC link, Siemens offers you the possibility of migrating these drives as well to the SINAMICS platform in stepwise fashion. For example, the power supply unit can first be changed over, and in later steps the individual inverters to SINAMICS S120/S120CM. This allows investment in the retrofit to be adjusted in line with limited budgets.

Optimized from networking to operationIn addition to the analog/digital interface, SINAMICS convert-ers can also be connected via PROFINET (including remote services), PROFIBUS and CAN. SINAMICS likewise offers you new possibilities for user-interfacing and operation as well: The AOP30 operator panel facilitates operational monitoring for you. You thereby get expanded diagnostics features based on internal trace functions as well as automatic recording of fault conditions and incidents offering read-out during opera-tion. At the same time, the new converters are particularly quiet – thanks to the latest insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) power semiconductor devices and an innovative cooling design.

Equip existing converters with the latest technology – SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES upgradesBesides changing to the new SINAMICS platform, you can also backfit your existing SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES converters with new, state-of-the-art technology. This can be done for example by replacing individual components. Siemens offers you various possibilities for this purpose.

Cut power costs with energy-saving fansEnergy savings of anywhere from 10 to 70% – in the electric power required for cooling – can be achieved if the fan modules used for cooling are replaced with new energy-saving fans.

The rule is that the lower the converter capacity utilization in the drive application, the greater the energy savings and the lower the noise level of the energy-saving fan. You benefit additionally from a more constant control cabinet temperature and less fouling of the filter mats.

The energy-saving fan is compatible for installation with the Chassis-II inverter devices, thereby ensuring fast and simple replacement. This can be done for example within the scope of the replacement interval recommended after 35,000 operating hours or four years of operation. The lighter weight of the energy-saving fan facilitates replace-ment work as well.

Update to the newest control moduleOlder converters of the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Vector Control CU2 series have been superseded by the Vector Control CUVC units. While CU2 modules are therefore no longer available for supply, these converters can neverthe-less be upgraded to the latest CUVC status. You thereby profit not only from our newest control functions, but also from the latest comprehensive firmware improvements.

Modernize your optical fiber transmittersOptical fiber transmitters are used to transmit signals in high-power converters of approximately 250 kilowatt or higher. Adverse environmental conditions such as the level of air humidity or temperature fluctuations can significantly contribute to the aging of transmitter diodes. Innovative development advancements in semiconductor technology have produced semiconductors that considerably reduce this aging effect on transmitter diodes. If need be, old transmitter diodes can be replaced with new ones without necessitating replacement of the electronics module. Siemens offers to perform a corresponding assessment inspection and backfitting for its customers (recommended after 64,000 operating hours or eight years of operation). You benefit from the enhanced reliability of signal transmission.

Modernize the filter capacitors of network filtersA network filter is used in converters that utilize an active front end (AFE) design solution. External influences on the network, excessive temperatures and aging effects can damage the filter capacitors inside. When such damage occurs, capacitors are disconnected internally from the network to protect them against consequential damage, but thereby lose their filter function. If individual defective capacitors are detected over the course of inspection (recommended after 40,000 operating hours or five years of operation), it is recommended that capacitors be replaced. At the same time you benefit from newer, more robust capacitors.

Option 2: Upgrade to latest technology
