A welcoming place to study...All the staff and students were great ambassadors for

the College at your recent Open Evening. My daughter’sapplication was promptly completed for Farnborough. On every level, in every area that matters to a student and a parent, the College was very impressive.Email from a parent who had just attended a College Open Day, November 2013

At the heart of the College community is theStudents' Association which provides every student witha voice, enabling them to share their views and opinions whichultimately have a huge impact on College life. We focus largelyon organising social and charitable events within College. At thebeginning of the term, we hold many events including PyjamaDay which is great for breaking the ice. Towards the end of theyear, we hold a fun packed RAG week which aims to raise moneyfor and awareness of, a different charity each day.

Many students worry about the progression from theirsecondary schools to College, and we do understand that it canseem very daunting at first. The officers on the StudentAssociation are a prime example of the how easy it is to adapt tothe differences in circumstances, surroundings and peers. Themajority of the 12 officers came from different secondaryschools and were individually elected, we now work effectively asa team to provide support for the entirety of the student body.

Farnborough Sixth Form is a place of endlesschances and opportunities. Each student is closelymonitored by Personal Tutors, with whom students develop aclose relationship, providing a sense of familiarity withinthe College environment. Volunteering and enrichmentopportunities are plentiful at Farnborough and students canreach further accomplishment through immersing themselves inthese programmes.

In recent years, the Students' Association has becomeincreasingly important in representing students' views, throughthe governing roles of both the President and Vice-President,they have a real say in the future direction of the College.

Coming here has been truly life changingand the best decision I have ever madefor so many reasons: the reputation ofthe College, the outstanding aspirationalteaching and facilities, the university feel ofthe campus, sense of community and aboveall because the staff here clearly enjoyworking with young people! What I didn’tknow was that choosing Farnborough 6thwould also enable me to achieve my dreamof becoming a Pilot by being awarded theTAG Flying Scholarship.

The many opportunities provided bythe College enable you to become the bestperson that you can be; not just academicallybut also by taking part in the many clubsand societies and as a result of the excellentpastoral care and personal tutoring.

Responding to the needs of the individual…Congratulations on another set of amazing A Level results this summer. It makes

me realise, yet again, how lucky I am that we live within the catchment area of such an outstanding college. Farnborough is a big college, with hundreds/thousands of students. Some people might say that it is too big to take intoaccount the needs of individual students. What I've appreciated most about theCollege tutors is how well they know my children, how much they have supportedthem and the way they have managed to bring out the best in them. Not just asstudents (jumping through all the hoops) but as individuals, and I did want topass on my very big thanks for that.

Meeting the demands of a changing world with confidence…I have never been so inspired, supported or encouraged by a teacher ever!

…Thanks for going the extra mile. I’m sure the others are just as grateful for the effort you put in to make thatsomewhat ‘boring at times’ syllabus a billion times more interesting.…Thanks for sacrificing your lunchtimes to help others and myself with our struggles, it did not go unnoticed and really, really helped.…Thank you so much for continuously supporting me. I hoped that volunteering at Henry Tyndale School would give me a taste of what working with children with special needs wouldbe like as I want to work with children in the future and am hoping to pursue a career in child psychology. It was truly the mostrewarding experience I've ever had and was the highlight of my week. All of the staff there are warm and welcoming and reallydo appreciate the help. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, not just those who want to get experience - it also looks greaton a personal statement. Holly Owens

Initially I volunteered in order to complete the volunteering section of my gold Duke of Edinburgh Award but having completedthat, I now volunteer because I enjoy it! Volunteering at the West End Centre in Aldershot has been a great experience. Local College - global perspective

Tanzanians really make time for people and there is a lovely sense of community spirit. I volunteered in an orphanage forstreet children called ‘Upendo’, which translates to ‘love’ in English. The kids here had often been orphaned because both parents had died of AIDs, or one parent had died and the othercouldn’t afford to keep them. The facilities were basic and the children didn’t have possessions of their own to entertain them. It really hammered home how much we take for granted: when I got out packets of stickers and they would all crowd around mebegging to be allowed another one to put on their pictures. Someof them would scoop up and collect all the leftovers, the cuttings of paper, card and glitter, so that they could decorate their rooms,in contrast to how we would just put these things in the bin.

One of my favourite encounters involved an inquisitive turtle. I had the pleasure of meeting one of the turtles local to El Puertito, who became so interested in my bubbles that he came within 10cm of my face. The experience of night diving definitelylived up to my expectations. I arranged to dive ata site in Las Galettas, the most southern tip in Tenerife, where I saw numerous Sea Snakes and Cucumbers along with Giant Crabs, Atlantic Damselfish, Wide-EyedFlounders, Trumpet Fish and Scorpion Fish.

Rather than working, they come to learn English. Yourealise just how rewarding whatyou’re doing is when you begin toreceive letters from students whotalk about their life story and theirinterests, or when the childrencome up to you on your own andtell you you’re a good teacher.Smiles radiate all around the classroom. Volunteering in Africa has been the most enjoyable andrewarding experience of my lifeso far. Although going away to a foreign country at theyoung age of 18 is very nerve-wracking as you have no ideaof what to expect, I can say thatI am glad I have done it as ithas given me the confidence tosee and travel the world alone. The ascent from Camp 1 (C1) to Camp 2 (C2) is a long one. This requires an alpine start to get the climb done in a day, so we started up the route at about 5am. We all finally arrived at the camp just after 19:00, 14 hours later; this is where the real climbing starts! The route is consistently around 50°, this is the ideal angle for absolute agony on the calves. With an 80 litre backpack on as well this was tough going. The route goes up the east rib of the north face of Chapayev, the crux section came at about 5100m. There were too many ropes to choose from but picking the right one is important.

Careers Information, Advice and GuidanceA substantial part of the tutorial programme is dedicated tocareers education with a strong emphasis on the use of onlineresources. Personal Tutors are all highly experienced insupporting students with their future plans. Individualinterviews can be arranged with specialist Careers Advisers. TheCollege is opening a new careers centre, which will providestudents with a ‘one-stop shop’ offering a comprehensive rangeof information as well as advice on careers, work relatedlearning and volunteering placements.

College Careers Conferences‘Moving On Day’ takes place annually and encompasses anexhibition in the Dame Kelly Holmes Sports Centre together witha Seminar Programme. Talks range from applying to competitivecourses, advice on student finance and finding anapprenticeship, to job search skills. The event brings togetherproviders of higher education and training, employers andstudents who are planning their future paths, as they entertheir final year at the College.

In March, we take first year students to the UCAS convention ata local university. We encourage students seeking employmentto visit national careers exhibitions. In April 2014 we held ourfirst Employment, Training and Apprenticeship Fair and we planto add this to our list of annual events. Students are alsoencouraged to take full advantage of the open days held byuniversities and professional bodies, which are a vital part of theapplication process.

The mentoring scheme provides individual support fromsomeone who already works in a profession or industry, whichis of interest to the particular student. Among our more famousmentors is Sir Gerald Howarth MP, who is a strong supporter of

the College. We encourage and support students to seek workexperience, this is a prerequisite for entry to some degreecourses but also strengthens every Curriculum Vitae.

Applying to universityAll UCAS applications are made online and the process begins inthe Summer Term in year 12. Students are supported inselecting their universities and in writing their personalstatements. Specialist programmes, including mock interviews, are available for students who will face these as part of theselection process, for example if they are applying to studymedicine or to Oxbridge. The College offers a Gifted andTalented Programme, more details are on Page 13.

Oxbridge Admissions Tutors from Oxford and Cambridge visit the Collegeeach spring to speak to first year students who want to find outmore about making an application. The College provides adviceon admissions procedures to both the universities of Oxford andCambridge - and there are strong links with individual collegeswho increasingly welcome applications from our students.Currently over 100 students from the College are studyingat Oxford and Cambridge.

Local universitiesStrong links are in place with local universities throughPartnerships and Compact schemes and with FarnboroughCollege of Technology, to assist students who wish to continuetheir studies in this area. The Students’ Association (SA)Every year the students elect a President, a Vice President and acommittee of ten other officers. Essentially the SA’s role is torepresent the voice and opinions of the student body and tohelp students get the most out of their time at College. Both thePresident and Vice President are full voting members of theCollege governing body.

The SA is involved in many different aspects of College life, suchas making the College more environmentally friendly, organisingextra-curricular activities and staging popular social events. The SA committee is also passionate about raising as muchmoney as possible for charity. By organising days such as PinkDay, Pyjama Day and RAG week, the SA raises thousands ofpounds for charity every year.

The Bursary Scheme/Further Education Free School MealsThe Bursary Scheme and FE Free Meals aim to provide financialsupport to young people so that they may overcomefinancial barriers that threaten their participation in education. The primary priorities are students who are economically orsocially disadvantaged, who need support with transport, mealsor associated learning costs. More detailed information can befound on the College website.

Making your decision - what next?

I was concerned about how I would adaptto the sheer size of the College but foundthat I adjusted quickly. In my opinionmaking this move has been by far the mosteffective way to enhance my self-confidenceand organisation skills. The regularone-to-one meetings with my Personal Tutorfrom the very beginning helped me to feelat ease about College work, universityapplications, and career steps for the future. The facilities are undeniably veryimpressive.
