the World Today

Today millions of people all over the world speak foreign languages.

Of the 4,000 to 5,000 living languages, English is the most widespread language. It ranks

second only to Chinese.

The UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand (320-350 mln)

India, Singapore and more than 50 other countries of the world

(130-150 mln)

China, Poland, Greece, Japan, Ukraine use English as the language of communication (100-1000 mln)

English is the language of politics

English is an integral part of

international communication

English is the language of modern technologies

Eighty percent of the information in the world’s computers is in English

Three quarters of telexes and telegrams are in English

English opens the window tothe treasure of the world’s literature

English is the main language of international tourism

English is the official language ofthe Olympic Games

and other international competitions

to enrich and widen our vision of the

world

to broaden our outlook about the world

to develop communicative skills

to deep our knowledge in different spheres of

life

to improve our memory

English helps
