Международный конкурс «A Letter to Santa Claus». Международный конкурс «A Letter to Santa Claus». проводится Центром «Снейл»

с 2005-2006 учебного года. В 2019-2020 учебном году участие в конкурсе приняли 481

участник.

Предлагаем познакомиться с заданиями прошлого года, которые помогут

будущим участникам подготовиться к конкурсу. Обращаем ваше внимание, что

данные материалы представлены лишь в качестве примеров и не являются

основным вариантом заданий в данном мероприятии.

Международный конкурс «A Letter to Santa Claus».

2019-2020 учебного года 1 – 4 классы

Task 1. Найди отличия (среднее время выполнения – 10 минут)

Приготовления к празднованию Рождества начинаются с украшения дома и ёлки.

Внимательно посмотри на две картинки и найди отличия. Прочитай утверждения и

запиши в Бланк ответов номер картинки, о которой идёт речь в каждом случае.

Task 2. Авторская игрушка (среднее время выполнения – 10 минут)

Здорово, когда на Рождественской ёлке висит игрушка, сделанная своими руками.

Например, игрушка, на которой изображены олени Санты.

Внимательно посмотри на изображение, прочитай пункты инструкции. Расположи

пункты инструкции от самого начала до конца. Ответ представь в виде числового кода

(например, 1234567).

1. Let everything dry.

2. Then add "V"s to fill them in.

3. Press the thumb (большой палец) onto a Christmas ball.

4. Then draw two lines where the antlers (рога) go.

5. When the thumbs are dry add eyes with your paint-

brush.

6. Paint your thumb.

7. Add a nice red nose.

Task 3. Рождественские мероприятия (среднее время выполнения – 15 минут)

В период Рождественских праздников ты можешь посетить большое количество

фестивалей и развлечений. Прочитай информацию про некоторые из них и утверждения после

текста.




Если утверждение верное, в Бланк ответов напиши True (верно), если неверное - False

(неверно) и исправь его на верное. Задание может выполняться как на русском, так и на

английском языке.

Christmas Festival of Lights

This festival is not a holiday destination but it is considered to be the largest choral festival in

the world. So hundreds of thousands of people visit the Grotto Gardens in Portland, Oregon to see the

light festival. During the Christmas season, one million lights turn on in big plaza where people can

also enjoy concerts, shows with puppeteers and carolers.

Christmas in Ice

In Alaska, there is a town called North Pole. Every year many people move to the forest to visit

the festival Christmas in ice in which talented sculptors build amazing works of art with pounds of ice.

Winter Wonderland

This festival is the world’s biggest festival because two million people visit this festival every

year. This festival is celebrated in Hyde Park, London. Visitors can enjoy many different attractions:

an ice rink, a Christmas circus, rollercoasters, Santa’s land for kids and a huge observation wheel.

There are also a Christmas market where you can buy some food and Christmas presents.

Task 4. Рождественский ужин (среднее время выполнения – 10 минут)

Ни одно Рождество не обходится без традиционных блюд.

Прочитай Рождественский стишок. Вместо каждого пропуска вставь одно слово из

списка слева. Из первых букв, оставшихся в списке слов, составь название традиционного

Рождественского блюда. В Бланк ответов запиши слова, которые ты вставил в стишок и слово,

которое у тебя получилось.

Task 6. Как зовут Санту? (среднее время выполнения – 15 минут)

Task 7. Пудинг (среднее время выполнения – 15 минут)

В английском языке нет пословиц и поговорок о Рождестве, зато как в английском

языке, так и в других, встречаются пословицы и поговорки о главном блюде Рождества -

пудинге.

В каждой ёлочке зашифрована пословица о пудинге. Расшифруй пословицы, запиши их

в Бланк ответов по-английски. Раздели получившиеся высказывания на две группы: английские

пословицы и шотландские пословицы.

Task 8. Письмо Санта Клаусу (среднее время выполнения – 35 минут)

В ожидании Рождества дети со всего мира пишут письма Санта Клаусу со списком

своих самых заветных желаний. Несмотря на свою занятость по подготовке к празднику,

Санта всегда находит время, чтобы прочитать письма всех детей, которые ему написали.

Твоим заданием будет написать письмо Санта Клаусу. Если ты хочешь, чтобы Санта не

оставил твое письмо без внимания, следуй следующим советам:

1. Почувствуй дух Рождества.

2. Обязательно поприветствуй Санту в начале письма.

3. Представься Санта Клаусу.

4. Спроси у Санты как у него дела, поинтересуйся о его здоровье.

5. Расскажи, какое рождественское блюдо ты хотел бы приготовить для Санты.

6. Санта будет очень доволен, если ты вспомнишь, что хорошего ты сделал за этот год,

какие добрые поступки совершил.

7. Вежливо дай знать, что бы ты хотел получить в качестве подарка на Рождество. Твое

желание может исполниться, ведь в канун Рождества происходят чудеса!

8. Обязательно поблагодари Санта Клауса за его внимательное отношение к твоему

письму.

Задание может выполняться как на русском, так и на английском языке. Объем письма –

100–150 слов.

Task 1. Find the differences (среднее время выполнения – 10 минут)

Decorating Christmas tree is very funny.

Look at these cute pigs. They have two Christmas trees! Find 4 differences between 2 pictures

(decorations and presents only). Write the differences in your Answer Sheet in English.

Task 2. Handmade Christmas ball (среднее время выполнения – 10 минут)

It's great when a handmade Christmas ball is hanging on a Christmas tree. For example, a

Christmas ball with a snowman on it.

Look carefully at the picture. Read the instruction and then put the sentences (1-7) of it into a

right order.

1. Slowly close your hand so an entire handprint is made

on the Christmas ball

2. Add a ribbon and hang your Christmas ball on your

Christmas tree

3. Add your snowman details: draw a nose, eyes, a mouth

and a hat

4. Then slowly take your fingers off the Christmas ball

5. Set the Christmas ball in the middle of your flat palm

Task 3. A True Tale about Rudolph (среднее время выполнения – 15 минут)

Rudolph is the ninth and youngest of Santa Claus's reindeer. Read the a true tale about this

funny guy and the sentences after it.

Decide if the sentences are True of False. If the sentence is False, correct it in English.

Robert May was a poor copywriter in Chicago. His wife Evelyn was ill. It was then, when on a

December night, his four year old daughter Barbara asked him, "Why isn't my mommy just like




everybody else's mommy?" The heart touched Bob's heart like a glass splinter. However, he made up a

story for her to placate the child and inspire her to be optimistic.

The story was about Rudolph, the only reindeer in the world with a big shiny red nose.

Everybody used to tease and make fun of this poor creature and call him 'Rudolph, the red-nosed

reindeer', which embarrassed him greatly. He felt very lonely. However, on one Christmas Eve, when

Santa got his sleigh ready for his annual trip around the world with his team of eight handsome

reindeer including Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, and Vixen and the entire reindeer community assembled

there to cheer them, thick mist and fog engulfed the earth.

Santa was wondering how he could distribute his toys now and how to find chimneys. Suddenly,

his eyes fell on the glowing bright red nose of Rudolph and found a solution for his problem.

He asked Rudolph to lead his sleigh, which he gladly did and was harnessed instantly. Rudolph guided

Santa safely to every chimney that night despite all the rain, fog, snow and sleet. This brave act made

Rudolph the most famous and beloved of all the reindeer and a great hero too. The very red nose,

which was a shame to him, became his most prized possession and every buck and doe in the reindeer

world.

The story so pleased Barbara that Bob decided to draft it into a poem as a Christmas gift to her.

The poem was called 'Night Before Christmas'. He recited it in one of his office holiday parties in 1938

and won spontaneous applause.

The booklet with the illustrations that he had prepared for his daughter became very popular. 6

million copies were sold. Bob May became a very rich man. Since then, Rudolph has occupied a

permanent niche in the Christmas legend.

1. A poor copywriter created the story of Rudoph for his wife.

2. Everybody made fun of the poor Rudolph with the red nose.

3. Santa Claus chose Rudolph to help him deliver the children’s gifts at Christmas.

4. Rudolph was not allowed to lead Santa’s sleigh because he was too clumsy.

5. Rudolph has become the most favourite reindeer in the world.

6. But the poor copywriter couldn’t get any money with his story and kept it for his daughter.

Task 4. Christmas Dinner (среднее время выполнения – 10 минут)

The Christmas poem below doesn’t make sense, because there are some words missing. Try to

figure out which words you should use to fill the gaps and cross them out. Then you have to take first

letters from the remaining words and you will be able to form name of a traditional Christmas dish. In

your Answer Sheet put the missing words from the poem and name the dish.

Where did Santa’s 1._____ go?

Task 5. Guess the Dish (среднее время выполнения – 10 минут)

Christmas dinner always consists of delicious dishes. It's time to find out how well you know

these dishes!

For each dish 1-4 choose the correct description A-D.




1. Pavlova A. It is a sweet pie of British origin, filled with a mixture of dried

fruits and spices called "mincemeat"

2. Mince Pie B. Bread made from flour and water in wreath or star shape, served

with butter, jam, honey or golden syrup

3. Christmas Damper C. It is a meringue dessert with a crisp crust and soft, light inside,

usually topped with fruit and whipped cream

4. White Christmas D. A sweet slice made of copha and mixed fruit

There aren’t any proverbs and sayings about Christmas and winter in English, but there are

some in other languages.

Each Christmas tree encodes a proverb about winter. Guess the proverbs, write them in the

Answer Sheet in English. Divide the proverbs into two groups: Chinese proverbs and Spanish ones.

Task 8. A Letter to Santa Claus (среднее время выполнения – 35 минут)

Christmas is a very busy time of year for Santa Claus. He has to get the sleigh ready, make

sure the elves have finished all the toys, and check his list twice to be sure he hasn't forgotten any good

girls and boys. But in the midst of all this chaos, he always makes time to read letters from children.

That's because Santa knows kids sometimes change their minds, and he wants to be sure he's

bringing the right gifts on Christmas Eve.

Your last task is to write your own letter to Santa. If you want to be very sure Santa knows

what you want this year, write a letter to Santa with these tips:

1. Get in the Christmas mood.

2. Start your letter with a greeting.

3. Let Santa know who's writing the letter.

4. Ask Santa how he's been.

5. Tell what Christmas dish you would like to cook for Santa

6. Tell him how good you've been this year.

7. Politely let him know what present you'd like.

8. Thank Santa for being so kind.

Your letter should consist of 120–160 words. Your letter should be written in English.
