People of all ages, races and religions enlist in the military for different reasons. Some enlist for college money and some to protect our country, while others enlist for the challenge and excite-
ment of jumping out of an airplane, driving a tank or learning to fire state-of-the-art weapons.
At an early age, Julie Bruder, a CSU senior nursing major, knew she wanted to be a soldier. As a high school student growing up in North Canton, Ohio, she enlisted in the Ohio National Guard before graduating high school.
While her friends were doing keg stands and enjoying their summers, Julie was learning to become a soldier at U.S. Army Basic Combat Training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. After basic training, she returned to North Canton where she enrolled in community college and earned a degree in respiratory therapy.
Wanting to work at one of the nation’s top hospitals, Julie moved to Cleveland where she landed a job as a respiratory therapist at the Cleveland Clinic and enrolled at CSU to earn her nursing degree. Soon after, she set her sights on becoming a commissioned officer in the Guard and enrolled in CSU’s Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program.
ROTC is a program where college students train to lead soldiers and become commissioned officers in the United States Army. Upon graduation, officers are shipped to duty stations around the world to lead soldiers and serve their country. While still in college, students can receive stipends and scholarships to finance their education while they learn about leadership skills, physical training, military traditions and customs, and receive hands-on training in hand-to-hand combat, land navigation and various other areas.
For Julie, the ROTC program gives her a chance to hone the tactical skills she learned in the Guard, meet new friends, learn new strategic military procedures, improve her physical fitness and gain leadership skills.
Forty-hour weeks at the Clinic, monthly drills with fellow Guard soldiers, classes at CSU and training with her ROTC peers makes for a hectic schedule. When she can find the time to squeeze in
a few of her hobbies, she goes for a run, enjoys singing and traveling, and most of all spending time with family and friends.
When asked how she would describe CSU, Julie often uses the word “dynamic” because of the great academic programs, partnerships, student life, location and opportunities that the University offers students. However, she fails to mention that dynamic students like her help make CSU what it is today.

1. misng letrs. relly?
Does it really take that much longer to
add an extra letter or two to a word? Your
friends reading your status updates are
left to decipher what it is you’re trying to
say with a Kellogg’s decoder ring from a
cereal box. Besides — it could become a
bad habit that shows up on your next term
paper. Yikes!
2. Pass on tHe drama every bad thing that happens to you isn’t the end of the world. So you spilled your Pepsi on
your syllabus and your pants. Call your prof and ask for another, then tape a sign to your
chest that says “i didn’t pee my pants.” no big
deal. reserve the drama for the things that deserve it and don’t become the guy/girl who
cried wolf on the internet.
3. mr. or miss PuBlic The wall on a Facebook page shouldn’t be used to hold long, private, extended conversations between you and your mom or about a horrible breakup. FYi — eVerYone can read it! Save it for email or texting and save us the pain of knowing you are lying to your mom when you tell her you spent the entire weekend studying.

3 things about CSU's own King ArthurFor the first time ever, CSU students can tackle the

of their own computers. For 72 hours straight,
from april 12th thru 14th , students can log on to
sgaelections.csuohio.edu to vote for their Student
government association (Sga) representatives and

Paper money. Dead presidents. Who uses straight cash anymore? Turn your Viking Card into a debit card by adding money to it at those small boxes posted on walls across campus (AKA the Value Transfer stations), the Viking Card Office and Treasury Services Office in the Main Classroom, and/or online at www.csuohio.edu/services/vcard.

e’d like to propose some apps for csu that would m
ake everyone’s lives a little better.
app ah-roma Can you smell it? if everyone’s
favorite local coffeehouse, Café ah-roma,
designed an app, they could alert you when
the line is short so you can run across the
street and grab a latte, bagel or lunch without
having to wait.
viking cam There’s so much new construction
on campus that it’s hard to track. This app
would offer a live look at construction progress
as it happens and a good look at the rigors of
construction work. That’s good motivation to pay
attention in class, graduate and get a desk job.
Quiz alert it doesn’t happen often but when it
does it can be a disaster – the dreaded math
pop quiz. This app would allow students that
are enrolled in the same class (but at different
times) the ability to alert other students that
danger lies ahead.

There’s nothing like cracking open a fortune cookie after stuffing your face with sweet and sour
chicken, then reading the perfect message at the perfect time. In case you haven’t been fortunate
enough to experience this ecstasy, we threw a few together so you can join in on the fun.
BTW - Bo Loong is an award-winning restaurant and one of downtown Cleveland’s best China Town joints.
