What is Energy Renaissance?

Energy Renaissance is a two-year old Australian company focused on manufacturing commercial lithium ion energy storage systems ('CESS') in Australia and ASEAN.

Our team includes experts in Australian federal, state and local government, blue-chip large-scale power engineering, commercial construction, finance, technology and marketing.

Energy Renaissance is supported by founding shareholder UGL Limited, the Northern Territory State Government and a US-based semi-solid-state manufacturing pioneer.

About the factory?

RENAISSANCE ONE will be the Southern Hemisphere’s first lithium ion battery manufacturing facility

It will manufacture large-scale lithium ion batteries optimised for warm climates

It’s a clean facility, with no industrial effluent and designed to be powered by solar and stored energy

If construction is approved this year, the first cells will roll of the production line at the end of 2018

What benefits would this bring to Darwin?

We would love to build our first factory in Darwin, however there are still more steps to go until we can confirm where the first Energy Renaissance factory will be.

• But it will be somewhere in Australia

• If RENAISSANCE ONE is based in Darwin it will:

• Be one of Darwin’s largest employers

• Preference local industry and suppliers

• Help Australian resource companies grow.

• Today, materials are shipped overseas for processing –relegating the Australian companies to the bottom of the value chain.

• Renaissance One will provide the impetus to invest in local processing - thereby growing jobs, profit and access to new markets

• Provide a must-see high-tech destination for visitors to Darwin

What benefits would this have for regional Australia?

Batteries combined with solar and/or wind provide the opportunity for many rural and remote communities to have access to power

This means an ability for greater sustainability and resilience for these regional communities, as access to power means access to services, businesses, jobs and connectivity

This could be a game changer for remote communities, including remote indigenous communities

What’s your view of the Tesla SA project

We love it! It’s a fantastic example of the role big batteries can play in solving real problems.

Our view is this is the very tip of the iceberg for large-scale storage. And soon we’ll have an Australian made and owned offering for part of this market.

What’s your view of the Townsville factory project?

We’re a strong supporter of the project.

It’s in a very different space – and on a much bigger scale – but our research shows there is plenty of room for different manufacturers.

The big advantage for RENAISSANCE ONE would be that the demand on local resources companies would be big enough to make local processing viable.

That means more jobs and more of the value stay inside Australia. And that’s good for everyone.

How are you different from Tesla (and others)

Their brilliance is in making electronic vehicles, solar installations and batteries feel within the reach of all of us. And in many ways, its Tesla that has paved the way for manufacturing facilities like ours

They’re a battle cruiser to our speedboat

Our focus is much narrower and we can deliver much quicker on top of this our batteries are designed very specifically for the Australian and South-East Asian climate.

We also offer the ‘greenest’ battery on the market with the most recyclable technology available.

Renaissance One means… more jobs and more of the value stay inside Australia. And that’s good for everyone.

If the batteries need to perform in hot and humid conditions, if cost is a barrier or guaranteed security of supply in this region is a concern – then Renaissance One batteries are the perfect fit.

If this isn’t important – Tesla, LG Chem and many others all have great solutions.

How is Energy Renaissance funded

Energy Renaissance has been privately funded since 2015 and continues to be privately funded

What assistance is the NT Government providing

We haven’t asked for any funds from the NT Government

We aren’t inventors – our view is that others are far better suited to that

Instead we spent two years evaluating the best possible technology for our smaller, hot-climate focused manufacturing facility

We are licensing leading-edge battery technology from a US specialist

UGL are an early investor and a strong supporter of the project

They will engineer and construct the facility
