[j[ru®[M]®~®[? ©w©~®®The year for Motor Cycle sprinters is measured by particular sprint dates and Brighton
has a special place in the calendar in that it marks the near end of the season and, sadly, the end of the summer. What a summer this year, let us hope that today's meeting willbenefit from this glorious weather.
This season has witnessed a revival of interest in Vintage, Post vintage and Classrcmotor cycle sprinting, marked by the establishment of the new sprint section of theVintage Motor Cycle Club who are well represented this year, particularly in the 500ccclass where the entire entry are either vintage or post vintage category. This revival isin no small way the result of so much hard work put in over some forty years by thatdoyen of organisers, Len Cole - now stepping down to take a well earned rest.
As time advances motor sport becomes increasingly hemmed in by restrictions of allkinds, seemingly a feature of life in general nowadays. Recent exhaust limitations haveprevented the entry of some of the sport's most historic motorcycles, the most notablebeing "Super Nero", the late George Brown's Vincent, nowadays ridden by his sonTony. To silence a supercharged nitro burner could destroy the engine thus losing forever a piece of British history. Such limitations will also preclude for ever witnessing suchmachines as the late Henk Vink's Kawasaki, a sight and sound never to be forgotten.
Notwithstanding, the "Super Bike" of today running in the Production class - forexample Ron Geary's CBR Honda and Steve Webb's GSXR Suzuki 1100 - can achievetimes and speeds that would have astounded us a small ten years ago. Remember, these are machines that are truly "Ride to work", a measure of how things haveadvanced.
Back down the years take note of V.M.C.C.s founder "Tich" Allen's Brough "Old Bill"dating from 1923, which in the hands of George Brough in '23 beat all comers. Take noteof that hardy annual Basil Keys with an unbroken run of Brighton rides dating from 1933;I believe that this must be the longest unbroken run in motor sport, a record of its own.The V.M.C.C. thank the Brighton and Hove Motor Club for their kind invitation, now
the highlight of the Sprint Section's year. Our thanks also to those folks who work so hardunder ever-increasing difficulties to organise the event and who are ever conscious ofpreserving this historic competition. And thank you, the spectators, for without you thischapter of motoring history would become yet another archive of 'photos, writings, andmemories of sounds and sights dear to us all.
