Westbourne Newslocal news from in and around Westbourne May & JuneSuccess for Local BIDsProposals to establish the Bournemouth Coastal Districts Business Improvement District (BID) have been approved, along with the Town Centre Bid. The Coastal Districts BID has the largest continuous geographical area of any BID in the UK. Des Simmons, Chairman of the Coastal Districts BID Steering Group said, "We're delighted that after all the surveys, the analyses, the feedback and the input we've had over the last year from hundreds of local businesses, the BIDs have been voted through by the very rms that will be core-funding them over the next ve years – and with such a high level of support."

Over the next ve years, the two BIDs will be investing £7million in the local economy. Funding comes from eligible businesses in the Coastal District BID. The Coastal

Districts BID places the emphasis on bringing people to stay in the town for longer and encouraging them to visit more of the coastal strip, particularly outside the main summer season. Marketing, events and promoting the three trading districts are the key aspects of its business plan.

Keeping Ralph’s Memory AliveThe memorial to Ralph Millward has received a good tidying and replanting. Ralph was murdered in 2009 outside Marks and Spencer and is still much missed by the local community. The teenage killers of the popular Big Issue seller are out of prison after just two years. A permanent memorial stands where he died. The Westbourne Traders Association contribued to this years upkeep. Thanks to Tessa for sending in this photo of the memorial.

It is no coincidence that Sue Robathan chose to train with ‘Younger 4 Longer’, as the course is the most comprehensive of its kind and was taught by a fellow nurse. The name clearly underpins the benets of regular exercise keeping you younger for longer! The class components include:• Mobility and flexibility work to

help with stiffness and reduced range of movement• Co-ordination and balance to help with reaction times and

general agility and thereby reducing the risk of falls• Cardiovascular work for a healthy heart, improved cholesterol

levels, reduced risk of high blood pressure and lower risk of diabetes

• Resistance training to build up muscle and bone strength and improve general performance.

All the above can lead to an improved quality of life and longevity. With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee approaching there are not many of us that can claim sixty years of service as can the Queen! The current group aged from late 50’s to late 80’s, clearly want to make a difference to their health and wellbeing. SD, a class member commented, "What a great way to spend an hour each Tuesday morning and get t at the same time! Thank you Sue, your class is such fun, and the music is perfect. Come on ladies (and men), you don't know what you are missing. No matter what your age or ability, you will enjoy."

Shape up with Sue for that Jolly Jubilee Do!

Canford Chase is about friendship and community, in a beautiful, tranquil environment. Come and enjoy a short stay, a relaxing break, or a long weekend with us.

Our friendly team at Canford Chase look forward to welcoming you to the many events we have planned in our lovely home and gardens throughout the next few months. Just contact us on 01202 766182 to join our next event and mailing list.

We’ve been enjoying the wonderful weather in our gorgeous gardens at Canford Chase, and looking forward to our special outdoor events programme this summer.

Our events are complimented by the tasty locally bought food we have become well known for, and three foods come to mind for their health giving properties – apples, blueberries & cucumbers.

An apple a day can help manage blood sugar, boost muscle growth and reduce body fat. Blueberries are renowned for their ability to help keep cells healthy, and they can support brain function. The simple cucumber is great for your skin, joints and energy levels, and helps keep you hydrated in the warmer weather.Spring FeteJoin in the fun with us, starting with our Annual Spring Fete on 17th May, please call 01202 766182 for details.

Don’t listen to gossip, come see for yourself discover the Argyll Bowling Club

Argyll Bowling Club has been a part of Westbourne sinceit was founded in 1905 and is still around today, yet surprisingly there are many local residents who don't even know it exists! Perhaps this is because the club is located on the West cli Overdrive and many people just park their cars and go down to the beach not realising there is a bowling club there at all. We spoke to Sylvia Nagarkar who told us more, “You would be hard pressed to nd a bowling club in such a prime location where the views alone are some of the best on the south coast. The sub-tropical gardens of Alum Chine are just across the road from the club with pathways leading to the sandy beaches. A truly ideal location. We are very fortunate to have two bowling greens and can accommodate league matches and friendly games throughout the bowling season.”There is a public cafe serving meals, snacks, drinks and ice creams. As a bonus, they also have a licensed bar which is open during normal licensing hours. Sylvia told us more about a drive to encourage new members, “We will be having Open Days on Sunday 6th May and Sunday 10th June, when anyone can come along and have a go at playing bowls for FREE. We will supply the bowls and shoes plus any guidance and instruction. We welcome people of all ages. This will be an ideal opportunity for you to come along and have a go or just pop in for a tea, coee and a chat with our members. If you like it, you may even want to join the club. If you are already an experienced bowler, you will be even more welcome!”

but only across the road

One of Westbourne’s best loved stores is making a move, albeit a very short move, across Poole Road. We met up with John and Julie from Chocol8 to nd out what’s behind the move and what we can expect from Chocol8 in 2012.The rst question that comes to mind is why the move, “our existing shop has very limited kitchen space”, explains John. “The new unit has better facilities including a large basement. We will be able to accomodate an increased number of customers and the new store has a courtyard at the rear for more seating planned in the summer. With this and the larger in-store seating area we will be able to double our capacity.”The new Chocol8 will open in mid-May, keep an eye on the Chocol8 website and Facebook page for full details of the opening (and some special oers!) We asked Julie what she thinks about life in Westbourne, “It’s a lovely place to work and I look forward to seeing our regulars. It’s full of friendly people and there’s always something going on.”Westbourne regulars will know Poole Road has a denite sunny side, the move sees Chocol8 on that sunny side. While this may not seem ideal for a shop selling chocolate, John assured us it won’t be a problem. “We won’t have chocolate products in the window and in fact rarely have used actual chocolate in our existing window display. Our chocolate is kept at the perfect temperature in chiller cabinets.” However Julie did hint at some exciting new

window displays coming up in 2012. So if you haven’t been to Chocol8 recently, or are a regular, be sure to check out the new store. Why not try the great ‘regular drink and your choice of 3 chocolates’ oer opposite.

Ann Runyard on a Bowen solution

The large Gastro–Intestinal System includes the throat, oesophagus, stomach, large and small intestine, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and anus. Problems aecting this system can vary extensively in their underlying cause.Symptoms may include abdominal pain, bloating, belching, indigestion, reux, constipation and/or diarrhea. It aects all age groups and populations and there is increasing attention into the mind-body or brain-gut interactions, promoting the attention of growing research. This includes psychology, diet, yoga, acupuncture and probiotics, a natural nutritional supplement that regulates and maintains a healthy bacteria ora.

There are billions of gut ora in this system made up of 80% good guys and 20% bad, which are increasingly sensitive to environmental changes like poor diet, stress and drugs. Also, with illness and age, our natural digestive enzymes become depleted causing the incomplete breakdown of food.Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) aects 10-20% of the population and is

characterized by similar symptoms. It is sometimes considered to be stress related aecting teenagers, young adults as well as women in their forties. IBS can persist for long periods with intermittent relief but most usually, is a chronic conditionBowen therapy is eective in treating digestive disorders, as it is stress-busting in its approach and as it penetrates to deep cellular level, will rebalance the environment of this huge system which is so important to our immunity and general health. Southcoast Property recently celebrated the company’s rst birthday. The family business, run by father and son directors Philip and Kieran, have had a fantastic opening year.“After opening the doors on the 11th April 2011, as a residential lettings and property

management agent with an almost empty window, it is absolutely incredible to see where we are now with a window display packed with a wide choice of both properties available for rental and properties for sale”, explained Kieran. “It’s almost impossible to believe, we couldn’t have hoped for better but it certainly is a nice feeling to know that our hard work and dedication to our clients is proving to play a major part in our success.”Kieran continued, “Our managed portfolio of rental property is steadily growing but we are in urgent need of more properties to oer people. We just can’t keep up with the demand, as a property comes to the market it is usually let within a couple of days. In fact we were instructed on a two bedroom mews house in Westbourne recently and we had let the property before it even made it on to the internet or into our window. Properties for sale are following a similar pattern, we have been instructed on a number of properties in many areas in recent weeks but only one within walking distance of our oce and we agreed a sale on that property on its second viewing within a week! We have a huge volume of footfall in our oce looking for properties in Westbourne and at the moment we just don’t have them to oer”.Philip nally commented, “We will soon be looking to add to our team as business becomes busier and busier. It is of great importance that we are able to continue oering our personal, professional and expert assistance to our customers as this is most denitely vital to our further progression.”
