Despite ever lower thresholds and barriers to get involved in individual and unorganized recreational sports,for many people the challenge remains to become and maintain being physically active. One of thereasons is that exercise is simply not intrinsically enjoyable for the majority of people but is known for itsshort-term costs (e.g. sweating, physical pain, effort, time constraints). Through designing wearabletechnology, we have explored ways to support and engage people in being active by also exploring ways toimprove self-worth to eventually encourage them with a more personal and distinctive approach.

Running ShirtsOur second case-study presents a color changingshirt for female runners that provides anencouraging quote before a run. The aim of thisdesign was to explore how a wearable can act as amotivator to go running.

AyméeOur first case-study presents Aymée, a smart brathat changes its pattern based on the amount ofphysical activity. Through this interaction, Ayméeaims to reinforce women recovering from breastcancer to feel good about themselves and to be(more) active.

ConclusionBoth cases are examples that aim to addressindividual needs of the wearer, resulting in feedbackthat is considered more personal due to it’splacement and visibility.To continue designing to overcome demotivation

among runners, a runners journey is proposedbased on a series of qualitative and quantitativestudies. Based on this journey, new explorationswill be designed that focus on the preparationphase of a run to eventually help runners maintainrunning.
