In memory of Elven J. Laskowski

“Obras, no palabras”.

Today Peter, the Rock, stumbles over Jesus’ predicted Passion,

prompting Jesus to label Peter as “Satan . . . an obstacle [stumbling

block] to me” (Matthew 16:23). Je-sus puts Peter and us in our place;

literally, “Get behind me,” i.e.,

where disciples belong, following the Master, imitating the Master’s self-sacrificing love (16:23). Peter needed to learn, as do Christians in every age, including ours,

that professing the faith is just the beginning. “Talking the talk” means nothing without “walking the walk.”

Then and now, Jesus does not match the popular concept of

“Messiah:” a champion to liberate our world—health-, wealth-,

and success-obsessed—from conflict and contradiction, pain and suffering, tragedy and waste. Instead, God’s Suffering Servant willingly accepts death, absorbs all the physical and emotional

pain human beings can inflict upon one other, in order to heal the human heart from within and liberate all humanity for eternal

life. Thus, the disciples then and we now need to learn that Jesus’ way, our way, must be the way of the Cross.

The price of “not conforming myself to this age” is steep, as Paul and Peter, like Jeremiah and Jesus before them, discovered (cf.

Romans 12:2). Losing life to find it. Forfeiting self to profit oth-ers. How lonely discipleship’s journey would be, were not disci-ples past and present and Jesus journeying with us! But what in-

describable joy, even in the midst of suffering, to be channels for others of God’s pardon and peace, the grace and goodness that always finds us when we lose ourselves for others and for God.

Question of the Week

Jesus bids me “deny myself” before “taking up the cross” and “following.” What radical shift of values, reordering of priorities, refocusing of vision must take place in my heart as discipleship’s

non-negotiable Step Number 1?

In observance of Labor Day, the

parish offices will be closed

Monday, September 4, 2017.

Event Time: September 8-10, 2017 Where: Oblate Renewal

Center, Oblate School of Theolo-gy, San Antonio, TX. You still

love your spouse very much. There is no one you would rather

spend time with, but over the last few years that time together has

been filled with children, job pres-

sure, in-laws, and daily living. You’d just like to run away with

your spouse and spend a few days renewing your relationship, and reestablish your

communication. The next archdiocesan-wide Be-yond Cana weekend is scheduled for September 8-

10, 2017, and will provide time away, the time with

your spouse, and the time with your God. For more information, please call Jo Anne and Dave

Dimitriou at 210-618-6672 or go to www.beyondcana.org.

TMIY

It's almost that time of year again! TMIY will

begin on September 12th at 6:30pm and will

meet in the Flanagan Hall. We personally

invite every male in our community as we gath-er together to learn and

discuss this year's topic, The Revelation Of The

Father. This is TMIYs 3rd year, and it promis-

es to be one of the best years yet! No matter where we are in our personal relationship with our living Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is patiently waiting to

encounter us and take us to that next step.

TMIY has big plans this year for our beautiful parish! We will be having a bake sale on September

17th, a booth selling homemade religious items at this years turkey dinner, and an amazing concert on October 20th featuring our very own Gerard

Mora and family with a very special guest, Justin Gambino!!!! We hope to see all you there!
