St. John Paul II, the bishop of Rome and head of the Roman Catholic Church (1978–2005), the first non-Italian pope in 455 years and the first from a Slavic country. His pontificate of more than 26 years was the third longest in history. He was canonized in 2014.

St. John of Capistrano was a Franciscan friar and Catholic priest from the Italian town of Capistrano, Abruzzo. Famous as a preacher, theologian, and inquisitor, he earned himself the nickname 'the Soldier Saint' when in 1456 at age 70 he led a crusade against the invading Ottoman Empire at the siege of Belgrade with the Hungarian military commander John Hunyadi.

St. Anthony Mary Claret C.M.F. was a Spanish Roman Catholic archbishop and missionary, and was confessor of Isabella II of Spain. He founded the congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly called the Claretians.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY REFLECTION October 20, 2019

Both weariness and persistence are things we can all relate and connect to with little difficulty. Sometimes when we are most weary it’s simply persistence in getting the task finished, ending the workday, or keeping a goal in mind that gets us through. Persistence. Tenacity. Stubbornness. Stick-to-itiveness. In this gospel it is the widow’s

persistence that eventually wins her justice. Because God is just and concerned for the rights of the downtrodden, persistent prayer always leads to justice. But for many, setting aside any definite time for prayer during the day may seem all but impossible. Persistence in praying “always” might need to take the

form in our lives of developing the habit of being aware of God’s abiding presence and blessings even in our busyness. The place and manner of prayer aren’t nearly so important as the fact that we pray -“always and without ceasing.” (Living Liturgy, p. 228)

LITURGY CORNER

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although the hours of daylight are rapidly dwindling, many people would say that these October days bring the year’s most splendid weather. Americans are riders and joggers, not strollers, and so the pleasures of the season are often lost on us. This is not the case with many Jewish people, who observe an ancient rule in walking to synagogue on the Sabbath. On city streets and suburban sidewalks in many cities, we may notice around sunset the nicely dressed families walking and chatting on Friday afternoon. After a short prayer at dusk, the families stroll home again for a relaxing and festive meal. They return to synagogue in the morning, and then spend an afternoon in family leisure until three stars appear in the night sky and Sabbath ends. Catholics, on the other hand, pile into the car and drive even a short distance to Mass; some even divide the family to participate at different hours. For Jews, the leisurely walk marks a dividing line between hectic life commitments and a day of abundant joy and enrichment. Before we became an automobile culture, Catholics embraced a similar pace, and in most places walked to church. These lovely days of fall invite us to tap into an old and life-giving tradition. If you live within a mile of your church, walk next week. If you must drive, park at a good distance and walk the rest of the way. Talk about your life, greet strangers, notice the crunch of leaves under your shoes. You may be surprised at how different Sunday Mass feels when it is framed by leisure!

PERSISTENCE Today’s readings are about persistence, passionate persistence. Exodus tells of a battle won despite weariness because Moses, with help from Aaron and Hur, held his hands raised. Timothy asks that same persistence of his community and us. Luke tells of a court case won by a widow, despite the dishonesty of the judge, because she will not leave him alone. The psalm reminds us that God is everywhere, guarding us from harm day and night, coming and going, now and forever. The readings are about persistence, the relentless, unwavering pursuit of what must not be lost. The readings are about God’s passionate persistence in pursuing us, seeking to win our hearts.

QUOTE of the MONTH from POPE FRANCIS

I…appeal to all politicians, regardless of their faith convictions, to treat the defense of the lives of those who are about to be born and enter into society as the cornerstone of the common good…A newborn child (brings) newness, future, and life….Voluntarily extinguishing life…is, in every case, a betrayal of our vocation, as well as of the pact that binds generations together, which allows us to look forward with hope…Taking care of life requires that attention be paid to living conditions: health, education, and job opportunities. In short, it includes everything that allows a person to live in dignity…When life itself is violated at its emergence, what remains is no longer the grateful and enchanted welcome of a gift, but a cold calculation of what we have and what we can use. Then even life is reduced to a one-time-use consumer good…Where there is life, there is hope! ~Pope Francis, February 2, 2019 Remarks to Italy’s Pro-Life Movement

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

At present, this ministry is only able to provide Bible study for the women, there is no one to provide this for men. Volunteers are greatly needed for both. Training is required as well as Virtus training through the ASF and a 3 hour MDC orientation for volunteers. For more information please contact the ASF Pastoral Outreach Office at 505-831-8174.
