Thir eth Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Pastors Desk
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Thank you to all of you who have been praying for me, and dropping off food, over the past three weeks, it has helped greatly as I continue to recuperate. For those who may not know, I have a herniated disc in my lower back, which sent me to the emergency room at the beginning of the month, because of the pain and other factors, I have not been able to celebrate weekend Masses in the church, but have depended upon other priests to cover them in my absence. Since it has been a struggle to celebrate weekday Mass in the chapel, I am limiting the Sunday Masses I will say in the church at this time, however I do hope to show myself after Masses this weekend. As far as treatment for the disc, I am waiting on clearance from the Orthopedist before I begin any physical therapy or other medical procedures. At the end of this week, we will be observing All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, days established for us to remember those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith, those who are recognized as saints, and those who we remember with affection and even still grieve over. Of course, there will be those who point to the pagan origins of these holidays, and we even have remnants of that paganism in some of our Halloween observances. A little secret is that I really enjoy a little bit of that pagan mischief, and if it were not so inappropriate for a Catholic church, I would love to decorate part of the property like so many people have been fixing up their homes. Just a few years ago, as Halloween fell on my day off, I was answering the door of my parents’ house wearing a werewolf mask; it got a few shrieks. There seems to be a part of us that still looks at the possibility of witches and monsters, not just to frighten us, but that part that says, ‘Maybe they do exist?’ That’s one of the things I find so interesting in our modern world, is that people are ready to believe in monsters, demons, and all sorts of evil, but feel that they are on their own to defeat these powers of darkness. Depictions out of Hollywood suggest that even angels are somewhat self-centered and resentful of humanity, which is in direct contradiction to what it is that we believe as Christians, that human nature is something to be viewed with the greatest of respect, since Jesus Christ Himself assumed our hu-manity, and glorified it through His Resurrection. What we face in this modern world is a neo-paganism; a culture where people make up their own myths about spirituality and where they fit into the cosmos, just as they decide what their identity or agendas will be. It is a time of super egoism. It is not a new phenomenon, as I had heard people thirty years ago talking about how they weren’t religious, but they were spiritual. One friend told me that they had already gone through Hell, so why should they be afraid of going there when they die. The fact is, that when we are going thorough what we consider “Hell” in our lives, whether it is trouble with our jobs, our marriag-es, our children, struggles with addiction, struggles with sexual identity, times when we feel most isolated, we are not alone. Christ is present in those darkest times. We may not realize that it is Jesus who is calling us to come out of the darkness, and into a new light, into a new life, but He is there. A great challenge in our age of super egoism, is that we have been tricked into thinking we are supposed to fight these evils on our own, and that we do not have to rely on anybody except our own ‘god’ that is within us. Yet when we take an honest look at ourselves, when we view the struggles that we have gone through, we have to recognize that it was something greater than ourselves that got us through; and it was the support of the community that we encountered which strengthened us. Our season of Halloween, Samhain, Dia de la Muerte, all of which is rooted in the changing of the seasons, the death of the natural world around us, in preparation for new life to come, was beautifully Christianized as All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days, because it is a perfect opportunity to reflect on that New Life which Christ holds out to us in His own Resurrection, which we have been prom-ised to be sharers in. Pax, Fr. Henry
Copyright © J. S. October 27, 2019 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Today’s readings invite us into prayer, into relationship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God better. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open-minded, com-passionate, and attentive. “The Lord will not delay,” he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Christian faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts long to become as gentle as Christ’s. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
